  • The N-value from the standard penetration test(SPT) is affected by the magnitude of the rod penetration energy transmitted from the falling hammer as well as the geotechnical characteristics of the ground. Understanding of the striking energy efficiency in the SPT equipment is getting important for that reason. The energy efficiencies of the various type of equipment were investigated through field tests using the instrumented rod and wave-signal acquisition systems including the pile driving analyzer(PDA). The rod energy ratio, ERr was defined as the ratio of the energy delivered to the drilling rod to the potential free-fall energy of the hammer. It appears that the type of the hammer and lift/drop system had a strong influence on the energy transfer mechanism and ERr also varies according to the energy instrumentation system and the analysis methods.

  • Driven pile has the excellent bearing characteristics and good economics, so it is known as the comparative piling method. To use the advantages of driven pile fully, it is necessary to perform the proper construction management. Engineers must drive pile to the proper bearing layer with proper blow energy and measure the blow count and penetration per certain depth to analyze the bearing capacity and driveability. In conventional method, these parameters have been measured manually so it was difficult to get good accuracy. After PIR-D(Pile Installation Recorder-Driven Pile) was attached to the driving equipment, the hammer efficiency, blow count and penetration in blow/10cm were measured automatically. In this paper, to givethe rational judgement criteria of bearing layer, driveability, blow/10cm according to pile depth during pile driving, the some relationship between the driving resistance and ground layer distribution was analyzed. The ground investigation during piles (PHC ${\Phi}450,\;{\Phi}400\;&\;Steel\;Pile\;{\Phi}609{\ast}16t$) installation in the marine clay layer in Incheon, the sandy soil layer in Yongin and the tuff layer in Pusan was done. And measuring hammer efficiency not doing recently, we could compare hammer efficiency(Eh) by PIR-D and energy transfer ratio(ETR) by Pile Dynamic Analyzer(PDA).

  • The Down-the-Hole hammer is one of the pneumatic drill equipment used for grinding, drilling, and mining. One the advantages of which is that a reduction work efficiency at deep site are relatively small compared to other drilling methods. Due to the large vibration in the underground area, it is difficult to measure the performance of the hammer, and hammer testing requires substantial production cost and operating expenses so research on the development of the hammer is insufficient. Therefore, this study has developed a dynamic simulation model that apprehends the operating principles of an 8-inch DTH hammer and calculates performance data such as performance impact force, piston speed, and BPM. By using the simulation model, design factors related to strike force and BPM were selected, and the influence of each design factors on performance was analyzed through ANOVA analysis. As a result, be the most important for BPM and the strike force are position of upper port that push the piston in the direction of the bit and in BPM, the size of the empty space between the bits and the piston is the second most important design factor.

  • When pile foundation constructed by driving method, it is desirable to perform monitoring and estimation of pile drivability and bearing capacity using some suitable tools. Dynamic Pile Monitoring yields information regarding the hammer, driving system, and pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. Dynamic Pile Monitoring is performed with the Pile Driving Analyser. The Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) uses wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables that fully describe the condition of the hammer-pile-soil system in real time, following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and an estimate of pile capacity. The PDA has been used widely as a most effective control method of pile installations. A set of PDA test was performed at the site of Donghea-1 Gas Platform Jacket which is located east of Ulsan. The drilling core sediments of location of jacket subsoil are composed of mud and sand, silt. In this case study, the results of PDA test which was applied to measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by underwater hydraulic hammer, MHU-800S, at the marine sediments were summarized.

Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.

  • Water hammer following the tripping of pumps can lead to overpressures and negative pressures. Reduction in overpressure and negative pressure may be necessary to avoid failure, to improve the efficiency of operation and to avoid fatigue of system components. The field tests on the water hammer have been conducted on the pump rising pipeline system with an air chamber. The hydraulic transient is modeled using the method of characteristics. Minimizing the least squares problem representing the difference between the measured and predicted transient response in the system performs the calibration of the simulation program. Among the input variables used in the water hammer analysis, the effects of the polytropic exponent, the discharge coefficient and the wave speed on the result of the numerical analysis were examined. The computer program developed in this study will be useful in designing the optimum parameters of an air chamber for the real pump pipeline system. The correct selection of air chamber size and the effects of related parameters to minimize water hammer have been investigated by both field measurements and numerical modeling.

  • Driving tests using model plastic piles with different hammer cushion materials were performed in order to evaluate the efficiency of energy transfer ratio from the hammer, degree of vibration of the surrounding ground and noise due to impacting. A small pile driving analyzer (PDA) was composed using straingages and Hopkinson bar which is measuring force signal and pile-head velocity. The hammer cushion (cap block) materials used for the model driving tests were commercial Micarta, plywood, polyurethane, rubber (SBR) and silicone rubber. The highest energy transfer ratio was obtained from Micarta in the same soil and driving conditions. Micarta was followed by polyurethane, plywood, rubber and silicone in descending order. The more efficient energy transfdr ratio of the hammer cushion materials became, the bigger average noisy (sound) level was found. In addition, Micarta and polyurethane provided bigger bearing capacities than other materials compared in the same soil and driving conditions in which the static loading tests were performed at the end of driving.

  • This study was aimed at comparing and assessing SPT-N values both measured by automatic and manual record devices of Standard Penetration Test. As a result, energy efficiency of hammer was approximately 62.9%, meaning SPT-N value measured by automatic recording device showed relatively accurate performance that the one done by manual device. Given the relations between hit frequency of automatic recording device and intrusion, the characteristics of stratum are expected to be proved in more accurate way. Additionally, higher confidence level seems to make it preferred and quality assessment method.
