  • A linear acoustic analysis is performed to explore the characteristics of acoustic damping by a gas-liquid scheme coaxial injector in a liquid rocket engine. The injector can play a role of acoustic resonator. Acoustic-damping characteristics of half-wave resonator are compared with those of quarter-wave resonator. Various effects of the boundary absorption coefficient, injector length and sound speed in combustion chamber and resonator are investigated. As a result, short tuning length of resonator and low sound speed of the medium have a favorable effect on acoustic damping. As the boundary absorption coefficient decreases, the tuning range of the resonator length becomes narrower.

  • To ensure the safety of disposal facilities for radioactive waste, it is essential to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the waste disposal facilities by using safety assessment models. This paper addresses the development of the safety assessment model for the underground silo of Wolseong Low-and Immediate-Level Waste (LILW) disposal facility in Korea. As the simulated result, the nuclides diffused from the waste were kept inside the silo without the leakage of those while the integrity of the concrete is maintained. After the degradation of concrete, radionuclides migrate in the same direction as the groundwater flow by mainly advection mechanism. The release of radionuclides has a positive linear relationship with a half-life in the range of medium half-life. Additionally, the solidified waste form delays and reduces the migration of radionuclides through the interaction between the nuclides and the solidified medium. Herein, the phenomenon of this delay was implemented with the mass transfer coefficient of the flux node at numerical modeling. The solidification effects, which are delaying and reducing the leakage of nuclides, were maintained the integrity of the nuclides. This effect was decreased by increasing the half-life and the mass transfer coefficient of radionuclides.

  • This paper is shown that the impulse and unit step response of second-order system can be computed by the analytic methods using Laplace transform. Also, the transient response specifications are explicitly formulated by the peak undershoot and maximum overshoot of the step response. Three different second-order systems are investigated: prototype system, system with LHP(left half plane) real zero, and system with RHP(right half plane) real zero. Based on these analytic results, this paper presents the sufficient and necessary conditions for the second-order linear SISO(single-input/single-output) stable system to have the nonovershooting or monotone nondecreasing step response.

  • A surface encoder based on the Half-shaded square pattern (HSSP) is presented. The HSSP working as reference grid is composed of the straight lines which are easy to be fabricated and make measuring time short. Since the periodic cell is separated in ON/OFF by the $45^{\circ}$ straight line, the duration from the starting point of scanning to the first rising edge and the duty cycle of the pulse train vary with respect to the position of the starting point. And the relationship between X and Y position and the duration, and duty cycle is described in the simple linear equation. Therefore, it is possible to measure X and Y position with the measured duration and duty cycle without calculating load. Through the test set-up, the feasibility of the proposed surface encoder was verified. Also the future works for improvement of performance were suggested.

  • This paper has shown that the impulse and the unit step responses of 2nd-order systems can be computed by an analytic method. Three different 2nd-order systems are investigated: the prototype system, the system with one LHP(left half plane) real zero and the system with one RHP(right half plane) real zero. It has also shown that the effects of the LHP or the RHP zero are very serious when the zero is getting closer to the origin on the complex plane. Based on these analytic results, this paper has presented two sufficient and necessary conditions for 2nd-order linear SISO(single-input/single-output) stable systems to have the nonovershooting and the monotone nondecreasing step response, respectively. The latter condition can be extended to the sufficient conditions for the monotone nondecreasing step response of high-order systems.

  • We investigate the spectra and the pseudospectra in plane Poiseuille flow, plane Couette flow and Blasius flow. At subcritical Reynolds number, the spectra are lied strictly inside the stable complex half-plane, but the pseudospectra are lied in the unstable half-plane, reflecting the large linear transient growth that certain perturbations may excite. It means that the smooth flows may become to turbulent even though all the eigenmodes decay monotonically. We found that pseudospectra is one reason that causes subcritical transition in plane Poiseuille flow and plane Couette flow and bypass transition in Blasius flow.

  • The pharmacokinetics of lithium carbonate were investigated in rabbits with folate-induced renal failure. The blood level, the area under the blood concentration curve (AUC) and the biological half·life were increased significantly, and the urinary excretion was decreased significantly compared with those of normal rabbits. Correlation of serum creatinine concentration and AUC, biological half-life, and correlation of creatinine clearance and renal clearance of lithium carbonate have linear relationship respectively. In short, dosage regimen of lithium carbonate is considered to be adjusted in the dose size and the dosing interval by degree of experimental renal failure.

  • The pharmacokinetics of norfloxacin (100 mg/kg, oral) in renal failure rabbits was studied. Renal failure rabbits were induced by the i.v. injection of folate (50,100 and 150 mg/kg). These produced significant increases of serum creatinine concentration $(S_{cr})$ and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Plasma concentration and AUC of norfloxacin significantly increased. Elimination rate constant $(K_{el})$ of norfloxacin significantly decreased, and half-life $(t_{1/2})$ of norfloxacin significantly increased. Correlation between serum creatinine concentration $(S_{cr})$ and half-life $(t_{1/2})$ of norfloxacin, and correlation between BUN and AUC of norfloxacin have linear relationship respectively. These results suggest that adjustment or the dosage regimen of norfloxacin is desirable, and serum creatinine concentration $(S_{cr})$ as well as BUN can be used an index for adjusting the dosage regimen of norfloxacin in renal failure.

  • The boundary/finite element analysis for the seismic wave amplifications due to nonhomogeneous alluvial deposits was performed in this study. For numerical analysis, the homogeneous linear elastic soil half-space was modeled by using the 3-node isoparametric boundary elements and the inhomogeneous alluvial deposit was modeled by using the 8-node isoparametric finite elements. The two elements at interface were coupled together by the equilibrium condition of the tractions and the compatibility condition of the displacements. As a prarmetric variable, the incident angle and the dimensionsless frequency of the SH, P and SV-waves and the shear wave velocity ratio and the mass density ratio between the half-space and the alluvial deposit were selected.

  • A numerical approach is presented for the analysis of the forced vibration of a rigid surface foundation with arbitrary shape. In the analysis, the foundation is discretized into a number of sub squaree-lements. The dynamic response within each sub-element is described by the Green's function, which is obtained by the Fourier-Bessel transform and Precise Integration Method (PIM). Incorporating the displacement boundary condition and force equilibrium of the foundation, it obtains a system of linear algebraic equation in terms of the contact forces within each sub-element. Solving the equation leads to the desired dynamic impedance functions of the foundation. Numerical results are obtained for foundation not only with simple geometrical configurations, such as rectangular and circular foundation, but also the case of irregularly shaped foundation. Several comparisons between the proposed approach and other methods are made. Very good agreement is reached. Also, parametric studies are carried out on the dynamic response of foundation. Addressed in this study are the effects of Poisson's ratio, material damping and contact condition of soil-foundation interface. Several conclusions are drawn the significance of the factors.
