Rotating Flows in Eccentric Cylinders (편심환내의 회전 유동)

  • A numerical method based on the spectral collocation method is developed for the steady rotating flows in eccentric annulus. Steady flows between rotating cylinders are of interest on lubrication in large rotating machinery. Steady rotating flow is generated by the rotating inner cylinder with constant angular velocity. The governing equations for laminar flow are simplified from Navier-Stokes equations by neglecting the non-linear convection terms. Integrating the pressure round the rotating cylinder based on the half Sommerfeld method, the load on the cylinder is evaluated with eccentricity. The attitude angle and Sommerfeld variable are calculated from the load. It is found that those values are influenced by the eccentricity. The attitude and Sommerfeld reciprocal are decreased with eccentricity. As expected, the effect of the annular gap ratio on them is negligible.

  • The single layer latticed dome is very sensitive on the slenderness ratio and half open angle of the elements, load condition, and the connection type because it is originazed by a lot of thin elements, so we have to use the geometrically nonlinear buckling load when the buckling of the structures is analyzed. But, it is very difficult to design the single layer latticed domes considered all conditions. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to propose the appropriate design method of the single layer latticed dome considered the geometrically nonlinear buckling load in base of the linear buckling load by the eigenvalue analysis.

  • Laser forming is a promising technology in manufacturing, such as in the shipbuilding, automobile, microelectronics, aerospace and other manufacturing industries. This process forms the sheet metal by utilization of laser-induced thermal stresses. Laser forming process has been studied extensively for rectangular shape geometry. This basic study presents the change in deformation behavior of sheet metal during transition from linear to curved geometries and irradiations as well. A series of experiments have been conducted on a wide range of specimen geometries such as quarter-circular and half circular plate. The reasons for this behavior have been analyzed. Results are compared and analyzed by simulations using ABAQUS. Influence of developed stresses on the bending has been investigated. This study provides the more understanding of forming mechanism influenced by geometry effect.

  • This paper is to verify the effects of English immersion program through the case study of the three and an half week English camp run by Hongik University. The student's proficiency in English varies according to different factors. Another goal of this paper is to pin down certain objective factors that have an effect on the English proficiency and the improvement of the proficient. The generalized linear model(GLM) is adopted for the related analyses in this paper.

  • This paper presents the analysis technique and procedure of main engine components-cylinder block, cylinder liners, gasket and cylinder head-using the finite element method, which aims to assess mainly the potential of lower oil consumption in a view point of engine design and to decide subsequently the accuracy of engine design which was done. The F.E. model of an engine section consisting of one whole cylinder and two adjacent half cylinders is used, whereby the crankcase is cut off at the block bottom deck. By means of a 3-dimensional F.E. model-including cylinder block, liners, gasket, cylinder head, bolts and valve seat rings as separate parts a linear analysis of deformations and stresses was performed for three different loading conditions;assembly, thermal and gas loads. For the analysis of thermal boundary conditions also the temperature field had to be evaluated in a subsequent step.

F. E.-assisted design of the eaves bracket of a cold-formed steel portal frame

  • Non-linear large-displacement elasto-plastic finite element analyses are used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket of a cold-formed steel portal frame. Owing to the thinness of the sheet steel used for the brackets, such a structural design problem is not trivial as the brackets need to be designed against failure through buckling; without availability of the finite element method, expensive laboratory testing would therefore be required. In this paper, the finite element method is firstly used to predict the plastic moment capacity of the eaves bracket. Parametric studies are then used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket against two potential buckling modes of failure: (1) buckling of the stiffened free-edge into one-half sine wave, (2) local plate buckling of the exposed triangular bracket area.The results of full-scale laboratory tests on selected geometries of eaves bracket demonstrate that the proposed design recommendations are conservative. The use of the finite element method in this way exploits modern computational techniques for an otherwise difficult structural design problem.

  • The steroid 9${alpha}$-hydroxylase activity has been detected in cytosol fraction, $100,00{\times}g$ supernatant of cell free extract of Mycobacterium fortuitum. The activity was not linear with protein concentration in the assay suggesting 9${alpha}$-hydroxylase is a multicomponent enzyme. The 9${alpha}$-hydroxylase system was partially purified through fractional saturation of ammonium sulfate, strong anion exchange (Mono Q) column chromatography, gel filtration (Superose 12) column chromatography, and testosterone affinity gel chromatography. Ammonium sulfate 50~60% saturated fraction of the cytosol gave 9${alpha}$-hydroxylase activity. For further purification, the half-saturated ammonium sulfate fraction was applied to Mono Q, Superose 12, or affinity gel column. The purification factors of 9${alpha}$-hydroxylase containing fraction after Mono Q, Superose 12, and affinity gel chromatography was 13, 11, and 17 respectively.

Polyol Synthesis of Ruthenium Selenide Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

  • Ruthenium catalysts modified by selenium have been introduced as alternative materials to Pt in Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). RuSe nano-particles were synthesized on the Vulcan XC72R carbon supports via polyol method. The prepared catalysts were electrochemically and physically characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV,) linear sweep voltammetry, methanol tolerance test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energydispersive Spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Increasing the Se concentration up to 20 at % increased the electro-catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction. By increasing Se amount, Ru metallic form on the surface was increased. The $Ru_{80}Se_{20}$/C catalysts showed the highest oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and outstanding methanol tolerant property in half cell tests as well as single cell test.

Design Method of a Circularly-Polarized Antenna Using Fabry-Perot Cavity Structure

  • A Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) antenna producing both high-gain and circularly-polarized (CP) behavior is proposed. To increase antenna gain and obtain CP characteristics, a superstrate composed of square patches with a pair of truncated corners is placed above the linearly polarized patch antenna with an approximately half-wavelength distance from the ground plane at the operating frequency. The proposed antenna has the advantages of high gain, a simple design, and an excellent boresight axial ratio over the operating frequency bandwidth. Moreover, used in an FPC antenna, the proposed superstrate converts a linear polarization produced by a patch antenna into a circular polarization. In addition, the cavity antenna produces left-hand circular-polarization and right-hand circular-polarization when a patch antenna inside the cavity generates x-direction and y-direction polarization, respectively. The measured and simulated results verify the performance of the antenna.

Determination of Uranium in Monazite Sand by Polarographic Method (Polarograph 에 依한 Monazite 鑛石속의 Uranium 의 定量에 關한 硏究)

  • A polarographic method for rapid determination of Uranium in the presence of foreign ions was proposed. The method is based on the measurement of polarogram in the sulfuric acid as supporting electrolyte. In this medium Uranyl ions give well defined reduction waves, and half-wave potentials are -0.19V vs. S.C.E. as first wave, and uncertain volt. vs. S.C.E. as second wave in $2.4 N-H_2SO_4.$ The first wave has a linear relationship between the concentration of Uranyl ion and wave height. The author also studied a method for rapid determination of Uranium in Korean monazite sand without eliminating the foreign ions. The Korean monazite sands were analyzed by this method and satisfactory result were obtained.
