Removal of nitrogen compound from waste water is essential and often accomplished by biological process. Deni-trification bacterium. Paracoccus denitrificans(KCTC 2350) is employed to estimate the ability and the characteristics of denitrification. In the immobilized biological reactor system, the measurement of absolute amount of active strain in the reactor is comparatively difficult or impossible. In this study, strain immobilized denitrification reactor was designed with the unwoven texture wrapped peeped hole plastic tube to calculated the absolute amount of active strain by comparing the activity of the immobilized reactor adn the free cell reactor. The reactor system was continuous stirred tank reactor and the rate of substrate consumption was assumed to be Michaelis-Menten equation. As a result, we found that the amount of immobilized active strain was the half of the total active strain in the reactor and the time required to reach in the equilibrium state in the immobilized reactor system was shorter than that of the free cell reactor system.
This paper covers nulling algorithm. In this algorithm, we assume that nulling points are already known. In general, nulling algorithm using matrix equation was utilized. But, this algorithm is pointed out that computational complexity is disadvantage. So, we choose gradient method to reduce the computational complexity. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we propose approximate gradient method using characteristic of trigonometric functions. The proposed method has same performance compared with conventional method while having half the amount of computation when the number of antenna and nulling point are 20 and 1, respectively. In addition, we could virtually eliminate the trigonometric functions arithmetic. Trigonometric functions arithmetic cause a big problem in actual implementation like FPGA processor(Field Programmable gate array). By utilizing the above algorithm in a multi-cell environment, beamforming gain can be obtained and interference can be reduced at same time. By the above results, the algorithm can show excellent performance in the cell boundary.
The electrodes for Phosphoric Acid Fuel Ceil were fabricated as a condition of PTFE contents in electrocatalyst layer and sintering temperature in the range of 25 -- 65 wt% and 310 -- $390^{\circ}C$, respectively. For the fabricated electrode, the accelation testing of cathode half cell at open circuit potential was investigated. While the performance of electrode showed maximum at the low level of PTFE contents in the initial stage of accelation testing, the maximum performance was shifted to higher PTFE contents of 45wt% after 24hrs accelation testing.

This letter presents two types of metamaterial-inspired absorbers adopting resistive trumpet structures at the X band. The unit cell of the first type is composed of a trumpet-shaped resonator loading a chip resistor, a metallic back plane, and a FR4 (${\varepsilon}_r=4.4-j0.02$) substrate between them (single-layer). The absorption rate is 99.5% at 13.3 GHz. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 95 % at 11.2 GHz (from 5.9 to 16.5 GHz). The size of unit cell is $5.6{\times}5.6{\times}2.4mm^3$. The second type has been optimized with a $7{\Omega}$/square uniform resistive coating, removing the chip resistors but leading to results comparable to the first type. The proposed absorbers are almost insensitive to polarizations of incident waves due to symmetric geometry.
We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic chracteristics of reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using wide viewing angle LC mode, fringe field switching(FFS). Unlike other reflective LCD modes, in the FFS mode, the LC director in plance so an application to reflective display consisted of polarizer, LC layer and reflector is possible. when an incident light is 550mm, the optimal cell retardation value is 0.1365${\mu}$m and the efficiency of reflectivity is high over 90% with very little wavelength dispersion. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation film with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows high contrast ratio (CR) over 130 with high light efficiency over 90% at normal direction and the CR greater than 5 exists over 60$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions.
A new paraffin salt bridge was developed for the concentration cell in high pressure system. The emf values of the concentration cells were measured to calculate the activity coefficients of the electrolytic ions depending upon the pressure of the system. The activity coefficients of sodium, chloride and bromide ions increase with the temperature of the cell and decreased, nearly half at 2500 bars, $20^{\circ}C$, with the pressure. These results can be explained to be attributed to the volume change of the hydrated ion due to the electrostriction. The volume change decreased with pressure due to an increase in the degree of the hydration.
This paper proposes enhanced single-phase pulse width modulation buck, boost, and buck-boost type ac-ac converters. The proposed converters, where input and output voltages share a common ground, require no isolated voltage sensor and have no leakage current problem. The commutation problem is solved with series-connected switching cell structures without using an additional RC snubber. In addition, with the use of the polarity of input voltage, switching patterns are determined so that the inductor currents can flow through switching devices during all operational modes. Two switches are always turned on during a half-period of the input voltage; thus, the switching loss is significantly reduced. Detailed analysis and experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed converter.
In cryopreserved rat embryos, survival rates obtained in vitro are not always consistent with the rates obtained in vivo. To determine the optimal conditions for in vivo development to term, rat embryos at the 4-cell, 8-cell and morula stages were vitrified in EFS40 by a 1-step method and transferred into oviducts or uterine horns of recipients at various times during pseudopregnancy. Vitrified and fresh 4-cell embryos only developed after transfer into oviducts of asynchronous recipients on Day -1 to -2 of synchrony, i.e., at a point in pseudopregnancy that was 1-2 days earlier than the embryos. However, although about half the vitrified embryos transferred into oviducts on Day -1 developed to term, only a minority of embryos transferred at later times did so, whether vitrified (10-34%) or fresh (24-33%), suggesting that this may not be the most suitable stage for cryopreservation. Very few 8-cell embryos, either vitrified or fresh, developed when transferred into oviducts on Day 0 to -0.5. However, when transferred into uterine horns, high proportions of vitrified 8-cell embryos (-63%) developed to term in reasonably synchronous recipients (Day 0 to -0.5) but not in more asynchronous ones (6%; Day-1). A majority of vitrified morulae also developed to term (52-68%) in a wider range of recipients (Day 0 to -1), the greatest success occurring with recipients on Day -0.5. Similar proportions of vitrified and fresh 4-cell embryos, 8-cell embryos and morulae developed to term when there was appropriate synchronization between embryo and recipient. Thus vitrification of preimplantation stage rat embryos does not appear to impair their developmental potential in vivo.

The effect of mycolactone, a recently reported apoptosis-inducing factor, was investigated in SCC15 oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC) cell line. Mycolactone rapidly induced cell death in OSCC cells in 2days, which was similar to that found in apoptotic cell such as detaching from culture plate and rounding-up of cells. Apoptotic cells were increased 4hrs after mycolactone treatment and more than half of cells showed apoptosis after 72hrs. Caspase 3 activation a biochemical evidence of apoptosis, was determined by Western blotting. Caspase 3 activation was started at 2hrs that lasted until 8hrs after mycolactone treatment. The expression of bcl-2 family genes was determined to explain the mechanism of apoptosis found in OSCC cells. The expressions of bad, bak, and bax (pro-apoptotic genes) and bcl-w and bcl-2 genes (anti-apoptotic genes) were not changed by mycolactone treatment. The expression of bcl-xi was decreased 8 hrs after mycolactone treatment. Mcl-1 expression was initially increased at 2 hrs which was decreased 8 hrs after mycolactone treatment. The down-regulation of these two anti-apoptotic genes might explain the mycolactone-induced apoptosis in OSCC cells. In this study, mycholactone was revealed to induce cell death in OSCC cells apoptosis and the apoptosis mechanism of OSCC cells was shown to be down-regulation of anti-apoptotic genes, bcl-xi and mcl-1. These results suggested the applicability of mycolactone for the development of an anti-cancer drug candidate by inducing apoptosis of OSCC cancer cell.
Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common cancer with poor prognosis. It has been hypothesized that Oct4 positive radioresistant stem cells may be responsible for tumor recurrence. Hence, we evaluated Oct4 expression in ESCC in pre-treatment, post neo-adjuvant residual and post-surgical recurrent tumours. Materials and Methods: Endoscopic mucosal biopsies were used to study Oct4 expression and the observations were correlated with histological tumor grades, patient data and clinical background. Results: All patients presented with dysphagia with male predominance and a wide age range. Majority of the patients had intake of mixed diet, history of alcohol and tobacco intake was documented in less than half of the patients. Oct 4 expression was significantly higher in poorly differentiated (PDSCC) and basaloid (BSCC) subtypes than the other better differentiated tumor morphology. Oct4 was also expressed by adjoining esophageal mucosa showing low grade dysplasia and basal cell hyperplasia (BCH). Biopsies in PDSCC and BSCC groups were more likely to show a positive band for Oct4 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Dysplasia and BCH mucosa also showed Oct4 positivity by PCR. All mucosal biopsies with normal morphology were negative for Oct4. Number of tissue samples showing Oct4 positivity by PCR was higher than that by the conventional immunohistochemistry (p>0.05). Oct4 expression pattern correlated only with tumor grading, not with other parameters including the clinical background or patient data. Conclusions: Our observations highlighted a possible role of Oct4 in identifying putative cancer stem cells in ESCC pathobiology and response to treatment. The implications are either in vivo existence of Oct4 positive putative cancer stem cells in ESCC or acquisition of cancer stem cell properties by tumor cells as a response to treatment given, resulting ultimately an uncontrolled cell proliferation and treatment failure.
