A field experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of three legume species in a zero-tillage, non-fertilized rice field in a temperate zone. Before the experiment for 5 years, from 1995 to 1999, plant growth patterns of three legume species grown as over-wintering (October-May) cover crops on a paddy field were maintained to study N balance and $\textrm{N}_2$ fixation. Decrease in plant density accelerated from after winter to flowering from 1,090, 320, and 5 to 732, 232, and 6 plants $\textrm{m}^{-2}$ in Chinese milk vetch (CMV), white clover (WC), and hairy vetch (HV), respectively. Total dry weights of plants above-ground level were 0.05, 0.11, and 2.43 g $\textrm{plant}^{-1}$. in WC, CMV and HV respectively but steeply increased at ripening up to 0.77, 2.33, and 26 g $\textrm{plant}^{-1}$. The root dry weight of HV and CMV rapidly increased while in WC, root dry weight increased slightly towards flowering. The highest nodule numbers were recorded in CMV to April thereafter WC produced the highest. Nodule size was distributed within 7mm in CMV but it was larger in HV varying from 1 to 10mm. Shoot N (g $\textrm{m}^{-2}$) greatly increased from over-wintering to flowering in CMV, HV and WC and it ranged from 1.66, 0.5 and 1.92 to 12.6, 3.1 and 13.02 g $\textrm{m}^{-2}$, respectively. After wintering, the initial shoot N content (%) was more in CMV. Root N content (%) was constant or slightly decreased in HV and WC. Soil total N in the control plot (clean fallow) was the highest on Mar. 2 then decreased rapidly to flowering. Soil N content was constant in HV plots whereas it was low in WC plots for the entire growth period except just after winter. Maximum nitrogenase activities were 9, 37.8, and 131 mol $\textrm{C}_2\textrm{H}_4$$\textrm{plant}^{-1}$$\textrm{hour}^{-1}$. in CMV, HV, and WC, respectively. Nitrogenase activity showed a direct correlation with nodule number, size and fresh weight. As a cover crop preceding a rice crop, CMV is more suited to colder regions due to its earlier ripening characteristics. Hairy vetch and WC are recommended for regions with a mild winter and a long summer owing to their late ripening and great N fixation activity.

The properties of non-waxy rice, Dongjin 1, cultivated with conventional farming (CF) and environmentally-harmonized farming (EHF) using hairy vetch were compared to determine rice water absorption, physicochemical and pasting properties, antioxidant activities of brown and white rice, and a sensory evaluation of cooked white rice was carried out. EHF was treated with green manure crops such as hairy vetch and chitinase, which produce microorganism culture solution. CF was applied with seed disinfection treatments, fertilizer herbicides, and agricultural chemicals for the control of pests and diseases. The absorption level of EHF rice was higher than that of CF rice grain, regardless of the cultivation methods used. The ash and crude lipid contents were higher, but protein and dietary fiber contents were lower in the CF rice than in the EHF rice. The total starch content, water binding capacity, and swelling power of white rice were higher than those of brown rice, regardless of the cultivation methods used. The DPPH's antioxidant activity was shown as follows: EHF brown rice, EHF white rice and CF rice, in a decreasing order. The initial pasting temperature of EHF rice was lower than that of CF rice, but the peak, cold, and breakdown viscosities exhibited reverse trends. The sensory evaluation showed that the cooked white rice cultivated with EHF was not significantly different from that cultivated with CF (p<0.05). The overall preference of cooked rice did not show significant differences between the two cultivation methods (p<0.05).
This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of green manure crop on growth characteristics and saponin contents of Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots for organic farming. Rye, hairy vetch and rye+hairy vetch were cultivated as green manure crops with several different methods before transplanting P. grandiflorum Radix. In root width and number of fine-roots, when the highest scores (23.9 mm, 25.7) was recorded in rye pre-cultibated plot in $2^{nd}$ year cultivation. Fresh weight of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root was no significant difference among the different green manure crop treatments, but fresh weights of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root of all green manure crop treatments were higher than that of control. The total content of saponin was highest detected in Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots of the hairy vetch plot (1,106 mg/100 g) and rye plot (1,693 mg/100 g) in $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ year cultivation, respectively. Therefore, we confirmed that precultivation of the green manure crops showed significant differences in the growth characteristics and saponin contents of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root, and growth and saponin contents in the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root of rye precultivated plot was much higher in $2^{nd}$ year cultivation than $1^{st}$ year cultivation.

Anthropogenic activities have increased the concentrations of greenhouse gases, such as $CO_2$, $CH_4$, $N_2O$, HFCs, $SF_6$, and PFCs, in the atmosphere. Among others, $N_2O$ is well known as an important greenhouse gas accounting for 7.9% of the total greenhouse effect and the effect of its emission is 310 times greater than that of $CO_2$. Agricultural $N_2O$ emissions are now thought to contribute to about 60% of the global anthropogenic $N_2O$ emission, which have been increased primarily due to fertilizer N consumption and manure management. Therefore, the reduction of $N_2O$ emissions in agriculture is being required. This study was conducted to determine the variation of $N_2O$ emissions by no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) practices in the cultivation of soybean from the sandy loam soils under the different kinds of fertilizer treatments June through September 2016 in Cheong-ju, Republic of Korea. An experimental plot, located in the temperate climate zone, was composed of two main plots that were NT and CT, and were divided into four plots, respectively, in accordance with types of fertilizers (chemical fertilizer, liquid pig manure, hairy vetch and non-fertilizer). Among all the treatments, $N_2O$ emission was the highest in August and the lowest in June. When $N_2O$ emissions were evaluated during the growing season (June to September) in all fertilizer treatments, NT with hairy vetch treatment emitted the highest $N_2O$ emission in August, whereas, $N_2O$ emissions was the lowest in NT with non-fertilizer treatment in June, respectively (p = 0.05). Based on the cumulative amount of $N_2O$ emissions during the growing season of soybean, NT had lower $N_2O$ emission than CT by 0.01 - 0.02 kg $N_2O$, although NT had higher $N_2O$ emission than CT by 0.03 kg $N_2O$ in only the chemical fertilizer treatments. As a result, it seems that the applications of liquid pig manure and hairy vetch rather than chemical fertilizer could decrease the $N_2O$ emission in NT, compared to CT.
This study was conducted to control ginger rhizome rot treated with the combined treatment, the hairy vetch, carbonized rice husk and eggshell calcium in organic ginger farm. Early symptoms of leaf yellowing and plant wilt began in the chemical fertilizer treatment on July 1. Ginger rhizome rot was more progressed on October 2, and stem browning and dead plant showed a high disease incidence with from 36.7% to 43.0%. On the other hand, the combined treatment did not occur at all until July 1 and delayed the disease incidence to October 2. It showed a low disease incidence of 1.3% to 1.7%. In the combined treatment, the content of soil Na, Fe, Cu was decreased and organic matter was increased twice with 31.6% than previous. Population density of Pythium sp. is lower in the combined treatment ($0.3-2.0{\times}10^3cfu/g$ than the chemical fertilizer treatments ($12.0-12.3{\times}10^3cfu/g$). The combined treatment, hairy vetch, carbonized rice husk and the eggshell calcium is able to control the ginger rhizome rot in organically cultivated ginger field.
Seed coat of hairy vetch is very thick and hard, and difficult to absorb water during germination. It requires much time that cotyledon comes out from seed coat. Therefore this experiment was carried out to increase the germination rate by enhancing water absorption through water-soaking of seed, chemical scarification by sulfuric acid, and mechanical scarification on seed coat. Water-soaking for 5 hours seemed to be highly effective in enhancing germination rate. Although not significant, water-soaking resulted in increase of germination rate by 9%. Effect of soaking temperature was not significant, but early germination rate was increased to be 5.0%, 31.7% and 48.3% at $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Mechanical scarification of seed coat led to a germination rate of 97% whereas intact seed showed that of 65%. Chemical scarification by sulfuric acid for 10min, 20min and 30min resulted in a germination rate of 76.7%, 74.7% and 96.0% respectively. It is clear that scarification increased germination rate.
Fresh hairy vetch (HV) as a green manure equivalent to $240kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ were incorporated into soil at corn planting in 1997 and 1998 to clarify the effects on changes of nitrogen (N) content in soil and corn plant. The influences of HV for the N of soil and plant were compared with those of ammonium nitrate (AN) in terms of mineralization and microbial biomass. During early decomposition of HV residue, the content of $NO_3-N$ in HV plot was as much as 60-70% of that in AN plot in surface soil of 0-15 cm depth. In addition, soil microbial biomass N (SMBN) by HV residue was increased up to $10-20mg\;kg^{-1}$ more than that by AN. Some mineral N from HV seemed to be released slowly until late corn growth stage judging from high content of $NO_3-N$ in both corn stem at silking stage and soil at harvest. There were no difference of N accumulations in corn plant at silking stage between HV and AN plots in both 1997 and 1998. At harvesting stage, a total of plant N accumulation in HV plot in 1997 was 8% less than that in AN plot while in 1998 it was 19% more. It was concluded that fresh HV green manure equivalent to $240kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ was good enough to substitute the same amount with chemical N fertilizer by slow releasing of mineral N from HV residue in soil.
The green manure crops such as rye, hairy vetch and scotch oat were applied to reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) cultivation, which manure crops was sowed in latter-September or mid-October and returned to soil in the next year of May. The growth and yields were increased as 33%(65.0kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) compared to continuous cropping system of 48.9kg/10a. In the CCS of sesame, it was increased as $10{\sim}15%$ in the green manure crop cultivation, and rye cultivation was the most effective crop to reduce the injury of continuous cropping in the green manure crops. The RCS displayed lower disease outbreak and Fussarium oxysporum density in the soil compared with the CCS, and the green manure crop showed good effect in the CCS of sesame. In the RCS, the porosity was most high in the RCS and CCS of rye cultivation, while rye and hairy vetch was effective way to reduce the injury of continuous cropping. The outbreaks of wilt disease and phytophthora blight were increased as the CCS years, however displayed lowest outbreaks of disease and the yields showed highest in the rye cultivation.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of legume cover crop culture on earthworm fauna in organic farmland. We compared sod culture with two kinds of legume crops of hairy vetch and crimson clover on organic citrus orchard to natural sod culture and conventional orchards in Jeju Island. We analyzed the soil characteristics and investigated the density of earthworms from the orchards. Organic matter content did not show much difference in soil analysis between organic and conventional orchard. But the biomass of earthworms in organic orchards is 3.8 times to 7.0 times higher than that in conventional cultivated orchards, and individuals of earthworms on organic orchards were 2.3~18 times higher than conventional orchards. The biomass of earthworms on hairy vetch and crimson clover cultivation was 44.8 g, 47.2 g in 2016, and 78.7 g, 31.8 g in 2017, respectively, which were higher than 32.8 g and 9.5 g of those on natural sod cultivation. Through this study, we found that hairy vetch and crimson clover cultivation improve the earthworm occurrence density in the soil on organic citrus orchard.
