The major findings were as follows: (1) The mean of university students' attitudes toward hair care was 18.5(out of a possible 30). (2) The variables that significantly influenced students' attitudes toward hair care were gender, school year and monthly spending money. (3) Hair care practices differed according to demographic variables and attitudes toward hair care. (4) The average monthly expenditure on hair care was 31,769 won. The variable that most influenced monthly hair care expenditures was gender. • Recently, it has been reported that chemical hair coloring can cause allergic reactions, the toxicity issue of chemical hair color was issued. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the hair coloration technique using non-toxic and bio-compatible hair color gotten from natural resource. In this study, the possibility using fermented Indigo as natural hair coloring agent was investigated. Bleached hair samples were dyed using Indigo, and the effect of dyeing frequency, the physical change after dyeing, color, surface and cross-section characteristics, and tensile property were also studied. In addition, the protection property of cationic detergent finishing on damaged hair samples were also studied. The following conclusions are made; 1. While bleached hair samples with low value showed the negligible effect of repeated dyeing, bleached hair samples with high value showed the good effect of repeated dyeing. 2. Hair sample dyed with Indigo showed a high light-fastness, however, tensile strength and elongation showed very low values (high damage on hair sample). 3. Cationic detergent finishing did not affect on the colorfastness because of decoloration after dyeing, however, it increased the smoothness of hair sample, and therefore, can use as protectant of damaged hair. 4. Hair scale was damaged after dyeing. It seemed that the alkali, potassium carbonate, increased pH of dyeing bath to 11, as a result, the hair was swollen, weaken, and dissolved on the prolonged dyeing time. Dyed hair sample became stiff and fine. 5. The color difference was 4.62 (a high fastness value) in the test of sunlight exposure, shampoo, cationic detergent finishing, and acid perspiration fastness.

  • Objectives : This study was carried out tn investigate the prevalence and symptoms related to hair dyeing among university freshmen. Methods : The authors conducted a questionnaire survey among 1,499 university freshmen from Mar 11 to 15, 2002. Results : The study group contained 710 tenses and 789 males. Up until 2002, 62.7% of the subjects had experienced hair dyeing, and this was significantly higher in females (66.2%, p<0.05), The period of first experience of hair dyeing was in high school for 361 cases (38.4%), after high school for 345 cases (36.7%t and before high school for 234 cases (24.9%), The major reasons of hair dyeing were 'to improve their appearance' in 465 cases (49.6%), and 'to follow the hair dyeing fashion' in 169 cases (18.0%). The prevalence of hair dyeing in 2002 was 47.8%, and again was significantly higher in females (53.7%, p<0.05). The major symptoms related to hair dyeing were 'cleaved and nonelastic hair' in 495 cases (69.0%), and 'thin and easily breakable hair' in 359 cases (49.3%). Of those, 361 eases (50.4%) appealed to three or more symptoms related to hair dyeing, Through multiple logistic regression, factors significantly associated with symptoms related to hair dyeing were found to be female (OR=2.14, 95% CI; 1.61-2.83), use of hair dryer (OR=1.36, 95% CI; 1.004-1.054), a frequency of hair dyeing of three or more (OR=1,40, 95% CI; 1.04-2.09), and a duration of processing hair dyeing of over 60 minutes (OR=2.18, 95% CI; 1.50-3.18). Conclusions : The prevalence and experience of hair dyeing were generally high among university freshmen. Therefore, more extensive epidemiological studies on the symptoms related to hair dyeing should be conducted.

  • This paper looks at perceived images of female university students concerned with various wedding hair coordination including wedding hair styles, veil details and fitting positions and head dresses. Ta design an experimental test of a wedding dress and hair coordination variables, the content analysis of magazines was performed and hair experts were interviewed. 17 stimuli representing the variables of wedding hair coordination were manipulated and included with hair styles(2), veil details(2), veil fitting Positions(2), head dresses(2) and a wedding hat(1). The questionnaire of 445 was carried out and data were statistically processed. As a result, five images of wedding hair coordination were factors loaded, that is, favorable, decorative, smooth, personal and pretty one. Various main and interaction effects were found in images of it regarding to changing hair styles, different veil details and fitting positions and head dresses. favorable images, they affected by interactions between hair styles and veil details, hair styles and veil fitting positions, hair styles and head dresses and between veil details and the fitting positions. For personal images, interactions between veil details and the positions of veil fitting had effects on female students; for smooth images, That is, for hair style, female university students were influenced by favorable and smooth images; for veil details, by decorative and smooth images; for the positions of fitting veil, by decorative and favorable ones Then the researcher examined effects by dual interactions between factors of wedding hair coordination. For decorative images, they were found influenced by interactions between hair styles and veil details and between hair styles and head dresses. For personal ones, interactions between veil details and the fitting positions; for pretty images, interactions between the fitting positions and head dresses. These findings will provide sellers of the wedding dress with the idea of how females to perceive wedding hair coordination according to the variation of it.

  • This study was aimed at giving help to the people intending to change hair fashion feeling for making their own hair style design and also providing the academic guide line to the cosmetic circles for developing new hair design and promoting sales by producing hair styles following the results from the statistical analysis based on the theoretical study on the face contour groups & hair fashion feeling groups. The researching methods were composed of following 3 steps ; prior theoretical research, statistical analysis, and hair style production. At first, the prior theoretical research was accomplished by analysis of literatures, magazines and internet sites about face contour, total & hair fashion feelings, hair style productions. Second, the prior statistical analysis were done about hairstyle images & their charateristics based on fashion feelings, and characteristics of fashion feeling group. And the third, hair style productions were done coordinated by face contours(oval, circle, long, square, reverse triangle) and hair fashion feelings(natural, sexy, sophisticate, ethnic, romantic pretty, elegance, sporty, avant garde) following the statistical results. But owing to the limitations to change hair length and color, these changes are modified by wigs and photoshop 7.0 program. So we could know there was no confirmed hair fashion feeling of one's best, but one could change one's hair fashion feeling and express one's beauty if one could adjust one's hair styles properly to one's face contour. This study would be very helpful to the people trying to change their own hair fashion feeling and be useful to the cosmetic circles for developing new design and promoting sales by comprehending hair design market and also be valuable to develop the methodology of 3 step research.

  • In this work, the post-treatment using organic acids during hair dyeing process was used to maintain hair color and to decrease hair damage. The effect of post-treatment using succinic acid and tartaric acid during hair dyeing process with cherry red and blue silver color on the persistence of hair color, tensile strength of hair, hair porosity, and surface characteristics of hair was investigated. After the repeated shampooing process, the experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could more efficiently maintain the hair color than control group. The experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could also increase the tensile strength of hair, decrease the hair porosity, and smoothen the hair surface, compared with control group. Particularly, tartaric acid was able to maintain the color of the dyed hair and protect the hair with higher efficiency than succinic acid.
