  • The purpose of this study is to propose a model development framework to predict the risk of safety accidents for foreign workers based on a deep learning algorithm for systematic safety management of foreign workers in the construction industry. Many past studies have shown that foreign workers working at construction sites are relatively more vulnerable to safety accidents than non-foreign workers, but quantitative research on the risk of safety accidents among foreign workers working at construction sites is lacking. Furthermore, due to a lack of predictive research on safety accidents, realistic and systematic safety management for foreign workers is not possible. Therefore, in order to complement this, this study proposes a deep learning algorithm-based model that collects, analyzes, and predicts safety accident data occurring at construction sites for systematic safety management of foreign workers at construction sites. The results and framework of this study can be used to analyze and predict various safety accident risks that occur at construction sites, and ultimately can serve as an important guideline for safety management of foreign workers at construction sites.

  • Despite all efforts to reduce construction disaster, construction site accident rate has steadily increased in Korea since 2008. As a different approach from traditional research, there is a growing issue about design for safety concept to prevent construction disaster. The notion is that construction worker's safety need to be considered at design phase, not only at construction phase. Globally, the notion has been noted that to improve the safety of the worker and used in practice. However, in Korea, most of safety management guidelines are limited to construction phase. From recent statistics, only 1.4 percent of designer feel responsible for safety accident at construction site. In this circumstance, this research find out safety guidelines through literatures reviews and practical experience of safety management in other country which apply design for safety concept. Selected guidelines are verified by survey which is evaluated with risk, function, cost, time and aesthetic view categories. Through the survey, define guidelines which could be effectively applied in Korea. By using proposed safety guidelines for design phase, preventing construction accident and improving designer's recognition of safety issue at design phase are expected.

  • In the recent business environment, risks related to product safety problems are increasing. These are arising from various factors such as increasing product and production complexity, supply chain diversification, enhanced PL (product liability) law and strengthening regulations of the government. Accordingly, ISO (international organization for standardization) published standards of PSMS (product safety management system) for suppliers such as ISO 10377 and ISO 10393. Meanwhile, the ISO 9001 QMS (quality management system) was revised in 2015, and it has established itself as an effective tool that can consistently meet the various requirements of stakeholders and promote customer satisfaction. This study aims to suggest an integration framework of QMS and PSMS based on the recent ISO international standards. To this end, firstly, the relationship between QMS and PSMS is studied based on the quality and product safety definitions, PDCA (plan-do-check-act) cycle and risk-based thinking. Secondly, the requirements of ISO 10377 and ISO 9001 are compared and classified as the common and ISO 10377 specific requirements. Finally, integration steps of two systems are suggested and guidelines that can systemize the integrated requirements are presented in the aspect of processes and documentation. This study is expected to be used as a guideline that helps companies those have already acquired QMS certification to build an international-level product safety management system early.

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common inheritable cardiomyopathies. Contemporary management strategies, including the advent of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and effective anticoagulation, have substantially improved the clinical course of HCM patients; however, the disease burden of HCM is still high in Korea. Sudden cardiac death (SCD), atrial fibrillation and thromboembolic risk, dynamic left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, and heart failure (HF) progression remain important issues in HCM. SCD in HCM can be effectively prevented with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. However, appropriate patient selection is important for primary prevention, and the 5-year SCD risk score and the presence of major SCD risk factors should be considered. Anticoagulation should be initiated in all HCM patients with atrial fibrillation regardless of the CHA2DS2-VASc score, and non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants are the first option. Symptomatic dynamic LVOT obstruction is first treated medically with negative inotropes, and if symptoms persist, septal reduction therapy is considered. The recently approved myosin inhibitor mavacamten is promising. HF in HCM is usually related to diastolic dysfunction, while about 5% of HCM patients show reduced left ventricular ejection fraction <50%, also referred to as "end-stage" HCM. Myocardial fibrosis plays an important role in the progression to advanced HF in patients with HCM. Patients who do not respond to guideline-directed medical therapy can be considered for heart transplantation. The development of imaging techniques, such as myocardial deformation on echocardiography and late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance, can provide better risk evaluation and decision-making for management strategies in HCM.

  • Background: Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) has been widely used as a biomarker of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in occupationally exposed workers. The objective of this study is to investigate the concentration of urinary 1-OHP among charcoal workers as subjects and non-charcoal workers as controls. Methods: Early morning urine samples were collected from 68 persons (25 charcoal workers in Igbo-Ora, 20 charcoal workers in Alabata, and 23 non-charcoal workers) who volunteered to participate in this study. 1-OHP determination in urine samples was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography after hydrolysis. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis at p < 0.05. Results: The mean urinary 1-OHP concentration (${\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine) among charcoal workers at Igbo-Ora and Alabata and non-charcoal workers were $2.22{\pm}1.27$, $1.32{\pm}0.65$, and $0.32{\pm}0.26$ (p < 0.01). There existed a relationship between respondent type and 1-OHP concentration. Charcoal workers were 3.14 times more at risk of having 1-OHP concentrations that exceed the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guideline of $0.49{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine than non-charcoal workers (relative risk = 3.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.7-5.8, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Charcoal workers are exposed to PAHs during charcoal production and are at risk of experiencing deleterious effects of PAH exposure. Routine air quality assessment should be carried out in communities where charcoal production takes place. Assessment of urinary 1-OHP concentration and use of personal protective equipment should also be encouraged among charcoal workers.

  • Sedation can resolve anxiety and fear in patients undergoing endoscopy. The use of sedatives has increased in Korea. Appropriate sedation is a state in which the patient feels subjectively comfortable while maintaining the airway reflex for stable spontaneous breathing. The patient should maintain a state of consciousness to the extent that he or she can cooperate with the needs of the medical staff. Despite its benefits, endoscopic sedation has been associated with cardiopulmonary complications. Cardiopulmonary complications are usually temporary. Most patients recover without sequelae. However, they may progress to serious complications, such as cardiovascular collapse. Therefore, it is essential to screen high-risk patients before sedation and reduce complications by meticulous monitoring. Additionally, physicians should be familiar with the management of emergencies. The first Korean clinical practice guideline for endoscopic sedation was developed based on previous worldwide guidelines for endoscopic sedation using an adaptation process. The guideline consists of nine recommendations based on a critical review of currently available data and expert consensus when the guideline was drafted. These guidelines should provide clinicians, nurses, medical school students, and policy makers with information on how to perform endoscopic sedation with minimal risk.
