The useful fungi which secret extracellular enzymes was selected for deinking agent of old newsprint. Five fungal strains were isolated from a paper mill soil ground. The CMCase, FPase and xylanase activities of fungi on the liquid culture were investigated at optimal growth conditions. The results of this study were as follow: The optimal pH and temperature for culture growth were 4~8 and 27~$35^{\circ}C$, respectively. For screening of extracellular enzymes at optimal culture conditions the optimal culture period were less than 6-7 days. Fusarium pallidoroseum and Aspergiilus niger which shows relatively higher CMCase, FPase and xylanase activities than the other species were selected for further enzymatic deinking research.
Ectomycorrhizal fungi are associated with plants roots and acquire significant amounts of nitrogen sources from the soil. For artificial cultivation, mass production of ectomycorrhizal fungi in liquid media is required. We studied the edible ectomycorrhizal mushrooms Hygrophorus russula, Ramaria fumigata, Sarcodon aspratus, and Tricholoma matsutake. All strains except S. aspratus NIFoS 2031 grew generally well on modified Melin-Norkran's (MMN) medium compared to on other media. All strains analyzed in this study showed significantly higher growth on organic nitrogen. Specifically, two strains of H. russula significantly responded to both tryptone and neopeptone media. Among different species and strains, there were clear differences in the capacity to grow on animal-based organic nitrogen sources.
Effects of silver nanoparticles on the phytopathogenic fungal growth were investigated. Fungal phytopathogens, especially for sclerotium-forming species Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and S. minor, were selected due to their important roles in survival and disease cycle. Tests for the fungal hyphal growth revealed that silver nanoparticles remarkably inhibit the hyphal growth in a dose-dependent manner. Different antimicrobial efficiency of the silver nanoparticle was observed among the fungi on their hyphal growth in the following order, R. solani > S. sclerotiorum > S. minor. Tests for the sclerotial germination growth revealed that the nanoparticles showed significant inhibition effectiveness. In particular, the sclerotial germination growth of S. sclerotiorum was most effectively inhibited at low concentrations of silver nanoparticles. A microscopic observation revealed that hyphae exposed to silver nanoparticles were severely damaged, resulting in the separation of layers of hyphal wall and collapse of hyphae. This study suggests the possibility to use silver nanoparticles as an alternative to pesticides for scleotium-forming phytopathogenic fungal controls.
Antifungal activities of clove essential oil and its volatile vapour against dermatophytic fungi including Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum. Microsporum audouinii, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton rubrum were investigated. Both clove essential oil and its volatile vapour strongly inhibit spore germination and mycelial growth of the dermatophytic fungi tested. The volatile vapour of clove essential oil showed fungistatic activity whereas direct application of clove essential oil showed fungicidal activity.
Attempts were made to develope the method of biological control by application of hyperparasitism on plant disease. The hyperparasitic fungi used in this work was Trichoderma sp. which was isolated from the ginseng growing soil, and the host fungi were Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht and Glomerella cingulata(St) Spau. et Schr. The hyperparasitic fungi identified as Trichoderma viride. It was observed that the hyperparasitic fungi either contact and penetrate into the hyphae of the host or inhibit the growth of host finally destroy of the host cells.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of foliar endophytic fungi and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on plant community structure in experimental microcosms containing an assemblage of five species of plants (Oenothera odorata, Plantago asiatica, Trifolium repens, Isodon japonicas and Aster yomena). Leaves of Sasa borealis, Potentilia fragarioides, and Viola mandshurica were collected in Chungbuk, Korea. Endophytic fungi were isolated from the surface sterilized leaves and identified to species level using molecular and morphological techniques. Four isolates of the endophytic fungi were inoculated to the leaves of host plants in the microcosms. Also, three species of AMF spores were extracted from pure cultures and the mixture of the three species inoculated to the roots of the plants. After four months of growth in a green house, effects of both symbiotic fungi on plant species diversity, community composition and productivity were examined. The plant species diversity showed significant differences with inoculation of the symbiotic fungi. Results indicate that AMF significantly affect plant productivity and plant community structure.
A total of 39 essential oils were tested for antifungal activities as volatile compounds against five phytopathogenic fungi at a dose of 1 ${\mu}l$ per plate. Five essential oils showed inhibitory activities against mycelial growth of at least one phytopathogenic fungus. Origanum vulgare essential oil inhibited mycelial growth of all of the five fungi tested. Both Cuminum cyminum and Eucalyptus citriodora oils displayed in vitro antifungal activities against four phytopathogenic fungi except for Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The essential oil of Thymus vulgaris suppressed the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani and that of Cymbopogon citratus was active to only F. oxysporum. The chemical compositions of the five active essential oils were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This study suggests that both E. citriodora and C. cyminum oils have a potential as antifungal preservatives for the control of storage diseases of various crops.
Hypocreales is one of the largest orders within the class Sordariomycetes in Ascomycota. Several species of this order are cosmopolitan and have a broad range of habitats. Here, we isolated several fungal strains from environmental samples, including freshwater sediment and plant litter. The strains were identified via molecular and phylogenetic analyses of rDNA and other DNA markers, such as TUB, RPB2, and EF1. The morphological characteristics of the fungi were investigated using microscopy, and culture characteristics were assessed from their growth on several media. We identified 17 species previously unrecorded in Korea: Dactylonectria hordeicola, Flavocillium bifurcatum, Fusarium luffae, Ilyonectria ilicicola, Ilyonectria qitaiheensis, Ilyonectria robusta, Lecanicillium aphanocladii, Nectria ulmicola, Neonectria lugdunensis, Ovicillium oosporum, Pseudonectria foliicola, Sarocladium spinificis, Scolecofusarium ciliatum, Trichoderma appalachiense, Trichoderma subviride, Trichoderma taiwanense, and Trichoderma tsugarense.

The role of endophytic fungi in plant growth and development is well documented. However, endophytic fungi with growth promotion capacity have never been isolated from weeds previously. In the current study, we isolated 8 fungal endophytes from the roots of Monochoria vaginalis, a serious weed of rice paddy in Korea. These isolates were screened on Waito-C, in order to identify plant growth promoting metabolites. Two fungal isolates (M5.A & M1.5) significantly promoted the plant height and shoot length of Waito-C during preliminary screening experiments. The culture filtrates (CFs) of M5.A and M1.5 also promoted the shoot length of Echinocloa crusgalli. Gibberellins (GAs) analysis of the CFs of M5.A and M1.5 showed that these endophytic fungi secrete higher quantities of GAs as compared with wild-type G. fujikuroi KCCM12329. The CF of M5.A contained bioactive GAs ($GA_3$, 2.8 ng/ml; $GA_4$, 2.6 ng/ml, and $GA_7$, 6.68 ng/ml) in conjunction with physiologically inactive $GA_9$ (1.61 ng/ml) and $GA_{24}$ (0.18 ng/ml). The CF of M1.5 contained physiologically active GAs ($GA_3$, 1.64 ng/ml; $GA_4$, 1.37 ng/ml and $GA_7$, 6.29 ng/ml) in conjunction with physiologically inactive $GA_9$ (3.44 ng/ml), $GA_{12}$ (0.3 ng/ml), and $GA_{24}$ (0.59 ng/ml). M5.A and M1.5 were identified as new strains of Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp., respectively, based on their 18S rDNA sequence homology and phylogenetic analysis.
