Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein L (hnRNP L) is a major pre-mRNA binding protein and it is an abundant nuclear protein that shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. hnRNP L is known to be related to many cellular processes, including chromatin modification, pre-mRNA splicing, mRNA export of intronless genes, internal ribosomal entry site (IRES)-mediated translation, mRNA stability, and spermatogenesis. In order to identify the cellular proteins interacting with hnRNP L, this study performed a yeast two-hybrid screening, using a human liver cDNA library. The study identified insulin-like growth factor binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4) as a novel interaction partner of hnRNP L in the human liver. It then discovered, for the first time, that hnRNP L interacts specifically with IGFBP-4 in a yeast two-hybrid system. The authenticity of this two-hybrid interaction of hnRNP L and IGFBP-4 was confirmed by an in vitro pull-down assay.

Biomedical applications of electrospun nanofibrous meshes have been receive tremendous attentions because of their unique structures and versatilities as novel biomaterials. Incorporation of growth factors in fibrous meshes can be performed by surface-modification and encapsulation. Those growth factors stimulate differentiation and proliferation of specific types of cells and thus lead tissue regenerations of specific cell types. Topographical cues of electrospun nanofibrous meshes also increase differentiation of specific cell types according to alignments of fibrous structures. Wound healing treatments of diabetic ulcers were performed using nanofibrous meshes encapsulating multiple growth factors. Aligned nanofibrous meshes and those with random configuration were compared for differentiating mesenchymal stem cells into neuronal cells. Thus, nanofibrous meshes can be applied to novel drug delivery carriers and matrix for promoting cellular proliferation.
Both knowledge management and BSC practices are in its inception in the tourism field, and the study explores the relationships between knowledge and BSC perspectives using correlations and path analysis. The purpose of this study was to explore the casual relationships among tourist destination knowledge and BSC performance perspectives. The study model added knowledge perspectives to the usual BSC model (with customer, growth and learning, internal process, and financial perspectives), in addition to the modification of the financial perspectives to economic, socio-cultual and physical impact. The study found out that knowledge supports learning and growth perspectives greatly, and less extent, internal processes and customer perspectives. Learning and growth affects internal processes and customer perspectives. Internal process supports customer perspectives. Both customer and, less extent, internal process have impact on the final results. The final analysis results were different by destination type. The study concludes with recommendations for further studies including rational BSC model for tourist destinations and relationships between BSC performance indicators.
This study presents three dimensional (3-D) seeding technique which is a modification of interior seeding. 3-D seeding is beneficial for shortening the processing period and enhancing the magnetic properties of REBCO bulk superconductors fabricated by melt growth. Oxygen channels were provided by using divided powder compacts instead of by using a rubber insert. Microstructure observations revealed that the grains grown from the seeds impinged each other and formed low angle grain boundaries of (001)/(001). It has been shown that the 3-D seeding technique reduces the volume fraction of a-c growth sector and thereby maximizes the area of a-b growth sector which attribute to the high magnetic characteristics of single grain REBCO bulk superconductors.

The kinetics of external hydrogen embrittlememt is considered. The equation of the crack growth rate (CGR) is derived from modification of the model developed by Wilkinson and Vitek. After calculation of hydrogen pressure build-up in the void, the effect of the internal hydrogen pressure on the void growth is added. The CGR is expressed by two terms. One is the term dependent on the critical stress, which is exactly same as Wilkinson and Vitek. The other is term dependent on the pressure of the hydrogen in void.
In this study, we describe the most expected behavior of cells on the modified surface and the correlation between the modified substrates and the response of cells. The physicochemical characteristics of substrates played an essential role in the adhesion and proliferation of cells. Glass and polymer substrates were modified using air plasma oxidation, and the surfaces were coated with self-assembled monolayer molecules of silanes. The PDMS substrates embedded with parallel micropatterns were used for evaluation of the effect of topologically modified substrate on cellular behaviour. BALB/3T3 fibroblast cells were cultured on different surfaces with distinct wettability and topology, and the growth rates and morphological change of cells were analyzed. Finally, we found the optimum conditions for the adhesion and proliferation of cells on the modified surface. This study will provide insight into the cell-surface interaction and contribute to tissue engineering applications.
Ghrelin is a unique peptide hormone that releases growth factor and it stimulates appetite. It comes from pre pro-ghrelin by the post translational modification process and its innate functions are known as food up-take and the growth hormone regulation. Therefore, the structural information of ghrelin precursor is of importance in understanding it function. From our results, we found that the solution structure of ghrelin is mostly random coil conformation at neutral pH value and the structural population changes with pH environments. Data from circular dichroism in different TFE concentrations revealed that the secondary structure changes from random coil to a-helix and the isodichroic point is observed at 202nm, implying that two equilibrium states exist between random coil and helical structure.
A TEM study on proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ reaction at sub-eutectoid temperatures has been made in hypoeutectoid Ti-3.gw/o Co and Ti-5.2w/o Fe alloys. Widmanstatten ${\alpha}$ plates were formed in both alloys within the ${\beta}$ matrix with some modification of degenerate forms. These degenerate plates were formed by the sympathetic nucleation of ${\alpha}$ plates at ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries. Three types of sympathetic nucleation, i.e., edge-to-edge, face-to-edge, face-to-face, were found in both alloys. The edge-to-edge sympathetically nucleated crystals formed a low-angle boundary between two crystals. The ${\alpha}:{\beta}$ interphase boundaries were found to be partially coherent interfaces which consist of regularly spaced misfit dislocations. The growth of these interphase boundaries were accomplished by the lateral movement of growth ledges. The intersection points of two ${\alpha}$ plates or the low angle boundaries which had formed by edge-to-edge sympathetic nucleation played a role as the potential sources of growth ledges during the growth of plate. The interfacial structures and the spatial morphologies of the degenerate proeutectoid ${\alpha}$ plates would be expected to influence the nucleation and growth of the succeeding eutectoid decomposition process.
The red tide-causing flagellate Chattonella anticfua can cause mass fish kills by their clogging in fish gills. Thisstudy examined the nutrient requirements of C. antiqua isolated from Korea. C. anticfua displayed maximum growthat the day five, followed by a decrease in cell density. Nitrate and nitrite were the preferred nitrogen sources, alonewith adenosine diphosphate for phosphorus compounds. In medium that contained ammonium, a significantdecrease in cell density was observed. Half-saturation constants, Ks, calculated from the maximum growth ratewere 4.94 U|M for NC>3 and 0.79 flM for P04. The growth of C. antiqua was not within the function of the N:P ratio (RU= 0.29). With an N:P ratio as low as 10, the increase in cell density was apparent, with a higher division rate. At lev-els above 50 fiM of NaNOg or 8 ;uM of NaHUPCU, the growth rates were somewhat decreased. Phosphate was thelimiting factor for C. antiqua growth since the starvation of phosphate had brought about a rapid decrease in celldensity in semi-continuous culture. Studies about the temporal modification of the efficiency of nitrate or phosphateuptake may be necessary to explain the bloom dynamics of C. antiaua.
SUMOylation has emerged as an important post-translational modification that modulates the localization, stability and activity of a broad spectrum of proteins. A dynamic process, it can be reversed by a family of SUMO-specific proteases (SENPs). However, the biological roles of SENPs in mammalian development and pathogenesis remain largely elusive. Here, we demonstrated that SENP2 plays a critical role in the control of hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth. SENP2 was found to be down-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues and over-expression suppressed the growth and colony formation of HCC cells. In contrast, silencing of SENP2 by siRNAs promoted cancer cell growth. We further found that stability of ${\beta}$-catenin was markedly decreased when SENP2 was over-expressed. Interestingly, the decrease was dependent on the de-SUMOylation activity of SENP2, because over-expression of a SENP2 catalytic mutant form had no obviously effects on ${\beta}$-catenin. Our results suggest that SENP2 might play a role in hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth control by modulating the stability of ${\beta}$-catenin.
