  • The committing step in Met and S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) synthesis is catalyzed by cystathionine ${\gamma}$ -synthase (CGS). Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana overexpressing CGS under control of 35S promoter show increased soluble Met and its metabolite S-methylmethionine, but only at specific stages of development. CGS-overexpressing seedlings are resistant to ethionine. Similar results were obtained with transgenic potato plants overexpressing Arabidopsis CGS. Several of the transgenic lines show silencing of CGS resulting in deformed p]ants with a reduced capacity for reproductive growth similar as transgenic plants by antisense RNA (CGS[-]). Exogenous feeding of Met to the CGS[-] and CGS[+] silenced plants partially restores their growth. Similar morphological deformities are observed in plants cosuppressed for SAM synthetase, even though such plants accumulate 250 fold more soluble Met than wild type and they overexpress CGS. The results suggest that the abnormalities associated with CGS and SAM synthetase silencing are due in part to a reduced ability to produce SAM, and that SAM may be a regulator of CGS expression.

  • Multilayered cartilage graft has been clinically used at tip plasty, total ear reconstruction, and cleft lip nasal deformities. Perichondrial flap or a free perichondrium has been also commonly used for induction of neocartilage. However, the influence of perichondrium on multilayered cartilage graft to strength and growth rate is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the strength and growth rate of different multilayered cartilage graft and to present the most ideal model of multilayered cartilage graft. Twenty New-zealand white rabbit were used. Triple layers of cartilage grafts with various perichondrium were inserted into six separate pockets in paravertebral region of rabbits. The grafts were grossly and microscopically observed on 8 and 16 weeks after grafting. On gross observation, the grafts showed marked enlargement of three layers of cartilage grafts with perichondrium compare with three layers of cartilage grafts without perichondrium In histologic examination, the number of PCNA-labelled cells were significantly high on three layers of cartilage grafts with perichondrium. In conclusion, this study suggested that triple-layer graft of cartilage grafts with perichondrium on the outside of triple-layer graft has strength and an effect on chondrogenetic induction by the perichondrium.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate how the tank colours may change the effects of extreme temperature on the survival, growth, and quality of juvenile golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus). The experiment was set up with fifteen treatments of five tank colours (blue, red, yellow, grey, and white) and three temperatures (30℃, 32℃, 34℃) with three replications. Fish performance was assessed for four weeks. The results showed that tank colours and elevated temperatures affected the quality of golden trevally juveniles. The survival and growth rate of fish tend to decrease gradually, but the deformation rate of fish tended to increase in the order of tank colours: red, yellow > grey, blue, and white. The growth and survival rate of fish gradually decreased when the rearing temperature increased from 30℃ to 34℃ and this effect was independent of tank colors. Importantly, the deformation rate increased under elevated temperature, particularly in blue and white tanks with potential long-term effects. It is, therefore, not recommended to use blue and white tanks for rearing the golden trevally juveniles, particularly during extremely high temperatures from heatwave events.

  • Cleft lip and palate is the most frequent congenital facial deformity of the orofacial area. Successful management of patients with cleft lip and palate requires a multidisciplinary approach from birth to adult stage. The early surgical intervention of lip and palate induces a significant incidence of maxillary growth restriction that produces secondary deformities of the jaws, and the severity of the skeletal discrepancies tends to increase with growth. The early growth modification treatment to utilize the patient's growth potential is necessary in the cleft lip and palate patients, and we must consider not only the existing skeletal discrepancies but the residual growth amount and the direction. However, once we have obtained good results with orthopedic treatment in mixed dentition stage, we must pay special attention to maintain the treatment results because of high relapse tendencies and the alterations of jaw relationships due to residual growth.

  • The osteochondroma is a cartilage-capped exostosis resulting from an error in the regulation of normal chondrocyte proliferation and maturation that leads to a normal bone growth. Although exostoses are benign lesions, they are often associated with characteristic progressive skeletal deformities and may cause clinical symptoms. Surgery can prevent progression and provide correction for certain deformities. We experienced a rare case of solitary osteochondroma in a 21-year-old male which caused the valgus deformity of the ankle.

  • Maxillary duplication is a kind of proliferative neurocristopathy and considered to arise from bifurcation of neural crest elements soon after migration into mandibular arch. Sometimes this malformation is accompanied with oblique facial cleft. Usually this type of maxillofacial malformation requires multiple surgical intervention and the results are far from ideal. It became more troublesome if it had not been properly corrected on time, because secondary deformities could be developed from growth and development of abnormal tissues. This is a case of a 25-year-old-female patient who showed severe facial asymmetry thought to secondary deformity of maxillary duplication and masticatory disturbance due to multiple supernumerary teeth on posterior part right maxilla. We successully treated these deformities through four times of surgery of bone resection, orthodontic treatment, zygomatic and orbital reconstruction, orthognathic surgery and scar revision... ect. So we reported this rare case with review of literatures.

  • Two experiments were conducted with broiler chickens to determine cage floor preferences, the strength of preference for a particular floor type and to evaluate the effect of rearing broilers on the preferred cage floor on productivity. In experiment 1, chicks when offered free access to either wire (WF) or plastic (PF) mesh flooring, preferred the former. However, when the perferred floor type (WF) was illuminated at 800 lux, birds spent longer time on PF. Also provision of incandescent lamps at PF resulted in broilers spending significantly longer period on WF. In experiment 2, while floor type had no effect on growth of female chicks throughout the duration of study, male chicks grown on PF were heavier than their WF counterparts on Days 21, 28, 35 and 42. Neither livability, nor incidence of breast blisters and leg deformities was affected by floor type.

  • Macroglossia is a rare clinical condition defined as an enlarged tongue. Macroglossia can cause structural deformities like diastema and disproportionate mandibular growth and present functional disorders such as dysarthria, dysphonia, and respiratory problems. A 7-year-old boy who had lymphangiomatous macroglossia was treated with a reduction glossectomy by anchor-shaped combination of a U-shape and modified key-hole resection. Postoperatively, the reduced tongue was contained completely within the oral cavity, but open bite remained due to prognathism. Sensory and motor nerves to the tongue appeared to be intact, and circulation was adequate. This patient will be monitored for recurrence of tongue enlargement.

  • Allergic rhinitis is a specific IgE mediated inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa, characterized by symptoms such as rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, nasal obstruction, nasal and eye itching, and sneezing. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis varies according to country, age, and surveying methods, but it seems to increase worldwide, also in Korea. Prolonged mouth breathing caused by allergic rhinitis can produce muscular and postural alterations, causing alterations on the morphology, position, growth direction of the jaws, and malocclusion. Also, mouth breathing leads to dryness of the mouth, causing various oral diseases; gingivitis, halitosis, inflammation of tonsil, increased risk of dental caries and dental erosion. In dental clinic, using rapid maxillary expansion to persistent allergic rhinitis patients with narrow maxilla can enlarge maxillary dental arch and nasal cavity anatomy, improving nasal breathing and reducing nasal cavity resistance. However, it is desirable to use along with otolaryngologic treatment. Dentists should be aware of the characteristics of allergic rhinitis and its effects on patients, and consider when planning dental treatment.
