Recently, abnormal weather conditions, such as extreme high temperatures and droughts, have increased in frequency due to climate change, there has accordingly been growing concern regarding the detrimental effects on field crop, including soybean. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effects of increased temperatures on soybean growth and yield using a temperature gradient chamber (TGC). Two major types of soybean cultivar, a medium- seed cultivar such as Daepung-2 and a large-seed cultivar such as Daechan, were used and four temperature treatments, aT+1℃ (ambient temperature+1℃), aT+2℃ (ambient temperature+2℃), aT+3℃ (ambient temperature+3℃) and aT+4℃ (ambient temperature+4℃) were established to examine the growth response and seed yield of each cultivar. Seed yield showed a higher correlation with seed weight (r=0.713***) and an increase in temperature affected seed yield by reducing the single seed weight. In particular, the seed growth rate of the large-seed cultivar (Daechan) increased at high temperature, resulting in a reduction in the number of days for full maturity. Our results accordingly indicate that large-seed cultivar, such as Daechan, is potentially vulnerable to high temperature stress. The results of this study can be used as basic data in the development of cultivation technology to reduce the damage caused by elevated temperatures. Also, further research is required to evaluate the response of each process contributing to seed yield production under high temperatures.
Pink snow mold, caused by Microdochium nivale, is a major disease on cool season turfgrasses in golf courses in northern Unites States. The relative susceptibility of 17 commercial cultivars of three bentgrass species (creeping, colonial and velvet bentgrass) to Microdochium nivale and the aggressiveness of M. nivale eight isolates obtained from infected turfgrasses on golf courses in Wisconsin were evaluated under controlled conditions. For the field trial, susceptibility of 2 year-old 12 commercial bentgrass cultivars was evaluated after inoculating three M. nivale isolates in the fields. There were significant differences in disease severities among the three bentgrass species, particularly between tetraploids (creeping and colonial) and diploid (velvet) species, and among cultivars within each species, indicating that there are varying levels of susceptibility in species and cultivars to M. nivale. Host resistance by days of cold hardening was confirmed, by detecting the resistance by 30 days of cold hardening treatments. In field trial, susceptibility of 12 bentgrass cultivars was highly correlated to the results obtained from growth chamber experiments. The positive correlation of the susceptibility between growth chamber experiments and field trials demonstrates that the growth chamber method is a useful technique for saving time, space and labor to evaluate efficiently pink snow mold susceptibility of bentgrass cultivars. This study could be applied to evaluating susceptibility of bentgrass to pink snow mold and also predicting a prospective evaluation of bentgrass cultivars to pink snow mold in fields in a breeding program.
This study was carried out to indentify the mycorrhizal development and growth stimulation of Pinus thunbergii seedlings grown on soil growth media which mixed with various amounts of pine bark. The results were follow ; 1. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius were significantly increased in number of short roots and mycorrhizal short roots, height, maximum growth rate, and leaf area than those of no-inoculation. 2. Mycorrhizal formation according to bark contents was highest by 25% bark treatment, and decreased in 50 and 75% bark contents. 3. Within the same treatment of bark content, seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius showed more increased height and leaf, stem, and root dry weight than those of no-inoculated.
To investigate the cellular growth traits of a photosynthetic green algae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, several tests upon a culture temperature, a culture time, the influence of nutrient and the intensity of illumination were executed. Using growth chamber, some optimal conditions for the culture of algae were as follows: The culture temperature was about $28^{\circ}C$, the culture time about 4 days, and the cellular growth of algae was in proportioned to the concentration of nutrient such as nutrient broth. And the more the intensity of illumination was increased, the more the algal cell showed good growth. And then, the activity of enzyme degrading acetaldehyde was also studied using HPLC from the same strain. This enzyme was dependent on $\beta$-$NAD^+$. And showed its optimal pH around on 9.0, and also its optimal temperature around at $40^{\circ}C$. The operational conditions of HPLC were as follows: Column, ODS-Hypersil ; mobile phase, 50% (v/v) acetonitrile.

Moss is used as an important material in indoor landscaping as well as outdoor landscaping. Moss is vivid green during growth and excellent in ornamental value. But when temperature drops, moss stops growth, turns brown or loses its ornamental value. In the present experiment, for the purpose of classifying native mosses according to the growth response to low temperature, the temperature of the plant growth chamber was set to 15℃/5℃ (16h/8h, day/night) and 5℃ (24h) for 8 weeks using nine native moss species. Thereafter, the temperature of the plant growth chamber was set to 20℃, and then the changes of moss block area and moss color were measured. The changes of moss block area and moss color were measured using a Photoshop program, after each moss block was photographed. As a result, Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.). Beauv., Etodon luridus (Griff.) A. Jaeger, Bachythecium plumosum (Hedw.) Schimp, Plagiomnium cuspidatum (Hedw.) T.J. Kop, and Hypnum plumaeforme Wilson showed a small decrease in moss block area at low temperature, and their recovery were the fastest at 20℃. These three species had higher green values at low temperature compared to other species, and the greenness increased rapidly at 20℃. On the other hand, Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.). Beauv., Marchantia polymorpha L., and Thuidium cymbifolium (Mitt.) A. Jaeger showed the smallest block area at low temperature and the lowest recovery even at 20℃. Their green values also decreased significantly at low temperature, and maintained low green value even at 20℃. These results showed that these three moss species are sensitive to low temperature. The remaining Myuroclada maximowiczii, Plagiomnium cuspidatum, and H. erectiusculum showed moderate responses to low temperature compared to other six species of mosses.

The wave height distributions in front of a vertically perforated wall structures for obliquely incident uni-directional irregular waves are mainly investigated by using 3D hydraulic experiments. The difference and similarity of wave propagation along the plain and perforated wall structures are investigated and particularly the effects of side walls in chamber and relative chamber width are analyzed. This study shows that the wave height distribution patterns for normalized wave heights in front of structure is significantly different between the plain and perforated wall structures, and the side wall in the chamber suppresses the growth of waves.
Changes of protein synthesis in the isolated egg chambers were studied during oogenesis of Drosophila melanogaster. Protein synthesis did not change much in quantity except that the activity was slightly enhanced at the stages 11 and 12, when new structures such as vitelline membranes and yolk granules were made, but considerably changed in quality during oogenesis. Protein synthesis was believed to occur mainly in the follicle cells, and a number of stage-specific proteins were found to differ at various stages. The observations suggest that proteins synthesized in the cells within chambers as well as those from the outside of the chambers might be directly required for the growth and maturation of oocytes in Drosophila.

Due to the rapid growth of mobile communication services, many studies have been performed on the biological effects of EMF(Electromagnetic field) exposure. However, it is not easy to create the field uniformity in radio frequency. To overcome this difficulty, the electric field and SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) distribution is developed to measure the whole body exposure system. In this paper, we developed the whole body exposure system for in-vivo study utilizing reverberation chamber which has a high possibility of practical use by substituting previous the EMC chamber. The field uniformity in the test area of the designed reverberation chamber was satisfied by the simulation and measurement data. In animal study of the whole body exposure for a mouse, the results of FDTD simulation were compared with those of measurement to confirm SAR under the electromagnetic exposure. We analyze the electric field distribution in the interior of the reverberation chamber and treat these results in statistical manner. In the CDMA frequency band(PCS & Cellular band), an average value of the whole body SAR and local peak value for a experimental mouse were presented for various input power.
This study was conducted to analyze the feasibility of plant growth under low pressure and to investigate the effect of pressure on plant growth. Three levels of pressures (25, 50, and 101.3 kPa (control)) were provided to analyze the growth of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as affected by low pressure. Photoperiod, air temperature, and photosynthetic photon flux were set at 16/8 h, 26/$18^{\circ}C$, and $240{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}s^{-1}$, respectively. Growth characteristics of lettuce were measured on 7 days and 14 days after experiment. Leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and root dry weight of lettuce measured on 7 days under 25 and 50 kPa were significant as compared to the control. Leaf length, top dry matter and root dry matter of lettuce measured on 14 days were significantly different under 25 and 50 kPa. From these results, we confirmed that lettuce could be grown under low pressure. However high relative humidity by evapotranspiration from leaves and growing beds under low pressure caused the condensation on the inner surface of the chamber. Therefore in a low pressure chamber, humidity control is required to maintain the relative humidity at a proper level.
The purpose of this study was to improve weed management systems under varying carbon dioxide concentrations and temperatures by evaluating the growth of Acalypha australis and observing the efficacy of four foliar and four soil herbicides, as well as measuring phytotoxicity in soybean crops treated with these herbicides. In both growth chamber and greenhouse conditions, plant height and shoot fresh weight of Acalypha australis increased as temperature increased. The variable to maximum fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm), relative electron transport rate (ETR), plant height, leaf area, and shoot fresh weight of Acalypha australis were higher at carbon dioxide concentrations of 800 ppm than at 400 ppm. The efficacy of a foliar herbicide, glufosinate, on Acalypha australis was lower at 30℃ than at 20℃ and 25℃ in the growth chamber condition and was also lower at 29℃ than at 21℃ and 25℃ in greenhouse conditions. In contrast, mecoprop efficacy on Acalypha australis was lower at 20℃ and 25℃ than at 30℃ in growth chamber conditions and lower at 21℃ and 25℃ than at 29℃ in greenhouse conditions. Glyphosate efficacy was lower at 21℃ than at 25℃ and 29℃ under greenhouse conditions. With soil herbicides, metolachlor and ethalfluraline, efficacies were higher at relatively high temperatures under both growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. However, in the case of linuron, the difference in efficacy was not observed under varying temperatures in both growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. When ¼ of the recommended glyphosate rates were applied to Acalypha australis, efficacy was lower under 800 ppm carbon dioxide concentrations than under 400 ppm. In contrast, when ¼ of the recommended rate of bentazone was applied to Acalypha australis, efficacy was higher under 800 ppm carbon dioxide concentrations than under 400 ppm. Despite application rates, glufosinate efficacy differed insignificantly under different carbon dioxide concentrations. When applied at ¼ of the recommended rate, the efficacy of ethalfuralin was higher under 800 ppm carbon dioxide concentrations than under 400 ppm. However, efficacies of other herbicides were not different despite varying carbon dioxide concentrations. Soybean phytotoxicity in crops treated with the recommended rate and twice the recommended rate of soil herbicides was not significantly different regardless of temperature and carbon dioxide concentrations. Overall, weed efficacy of some herbicides decreased in response to different temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations. Therefore, new weed management methods are required to ensure high rates of weed control in conditions affected by climate change.
