Agricultural is recognised as being the leading contributor to groundwater. As a consequence, the consumer have to has bear the high expenses of water supplied to be treated. Importantly, the cost of water supplied is a function of the water quality as well as the scale of drinking water treatments. The relationship between the consumer payment and water quality improvement was affected by the scale of drinking water treatments directly. Hence when we achieve the high quality and low cost in the case of groundwater treatment for drinking, it is needed to consider both water quality and plant scale.

For survival of human beings clean water is an essential commodity whereas contamination in drinking water threatens to mankind. The main cause of water contamination is social and development activities of human being along with increasing population. The community in the study area has acute shortage of drinking water along with about 40 to 60% has no access to safe drinking water. This study indicates drinking water quality of two major sources of coastal belt of Karachi one is supplied by Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) as tap water and the other through groundwater. The physicochemical analysis was carried out by following the standard methods for checking the quality of drinking water. The analyzed results showed that the quality of groundwater was unfit as potable water. The most critical situation was observed as high level of contamination followed by high turbidity and increased salinity levels. TDS in surface water were found 12% above and TDS in groundwater was 20% below the National Drinking Water Quality Standards (NDWQS) of Pakistan as well as the permissible WHO drinking water quality guidelines.
Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system uses groundwater thermal energy for cooling and heating of buildings, and it is also often utilized to provide warm water to crops and plants for the purpose of enhancing agricultural yields. This study investigated the potential influences of a ATES system on the geochemical properties of groundwater by simulating the variation of hydrochemistry and saturation index of groundwater during ATES operation. The test bed was installed at an agricultural field, which is mainly composed of an groundwater-rich alluvial plain. The simulation results showed no significant precipitation of mineral phases such as manganese-iron oxide, carbonate and sulfate around the ATES test bed, as well as no debasement of other important water quality parameters. The implementation of ATES system in the study area was appropriate and effective for utilizing the thermal energy of groundwater for agricultural use.
The basic data of groundwater quality such as water temperature, pH and electric conductivity were collected for 6 months from July to December 2000 in Yongnup. The results are as follows; the values of groundwater quality at the unsaturated points were beyond the distribution range when compared with those at fully saturated points. Temperature of groundwater in Yongnup increased with the rising of watertable. The values of pH were usually measured between 5.0 and 6.0, but sometimes those of lower than 4.0 were indicated. The value measured at unvegetated ground was higher than that at covered area. Also, the electric conductivity increased with the rising of watertable. The values of water quality between groundwater and surface water were quite different from each other and varied with seasonal change. The measured values of pH and electric conductivity had a proportional relationship.

Based on the current status of groundwater usage in the dry season through field surveys, this study tried to suggest countermeasures to reduce groundwater usage and to improve the water quality of baseflow from agricultural fields. For this purposes, basins with water curtain cultivation preceded were targeted where decreases of groundwater due to continuous use of groundwater in spring and winter annually observed. From monitoring groudwater usage of the study watershed, 130,058, 130,105 m3/day of water was pumped in during the water curtain cultivation period (October-February) in the Shindun, Seokwon watershed respectively. And the pilot application of the smart automated sensor-based water curtain cultivation system (smart WC system) developed in this study to reduce groundwater consumption has been conducted. As a result, the efficiency of the smart WC system when threshold temperature is set as 6.3 ℃ was 21.1% compared to conventional cultivation and efficiency increased as threshold temperature gets lower. Lastly, in this study, culvert drainage and Bio-filters were installed and rainfall monitoring was performed 15 times in order to analyze the baseflow securement and pollutant loads behavior. As a result, the test-bed with culvert drainage and Bio-filter installed together generated 61.4% more baseflow (4.974 m3) than the test-bed with only culvert drainage was installed (3.056 m3). However, the total pollutant load of all water quality contents (BOD, COD, T-N, TOC) except for the SS and T-P was found to be greater in the culvert drain and Bio-filter installed than in the culvert drain test-bed.

Numerous studies on urban groundwater have been carried out in many other countries. Urban groundwater shows a unique hydrologic system because of complex urban characteristics such as road pavement, sewers and public water supply systems. These urban facilities may change the characteristics of groundwater recharge but contaminate its quality as well. There have been several researches on urban groundwater in Seoul. Seoul has been industrialized very rapidly so that the city has large population. The recent population in Seoul amounts to more than ten millions, corresponding to a very high density of about 17, 000 people/km$^2$. Therefore, many factors affect the groundwater quality and quantity in Seoul. Nowadays, groundwater in Seoul is being extracted for construction, industrial use, and drinking and so on. There are 15, 714 wells in Seoul and its annual usage is 41, 425, 977m$^3$(in 2001). Therefore, systematic studies are needed to properly manage and use the groundwater in Seoul. The purposes of this study in progress are to identify geochemical characteristics of groundwater in Seoul and to determine the extent of groundwater contamination and its relationship with urban characteristics. For this study, groundwater was sampled from more than 400 preexisting wells that were randomly selected throughout the Seoul area. For all samples, major cations together with Si, Al, Fe, Pb, Hg For 200 samples among them, TCE, PCE, BTEX were also analyzed by GC. Our study shows that groundwater types of Seoul are distributed broadly from Ca-HCO$_3$ type to Ca-Cl+NO$_3$ type. The latter type indicates anthropogenic contamination. Among cations, Ca is generally high in most samples. In some samples, Na and K are dominant. The dominant anions change widely from HCO$_3$ to Cl+NO$_3$. The anion composition is considered to effectively indicate the contribution of distinct anthropogenic sources. In addition, major ions are positively proportional to total dissolved solid (TDS) except K and NO$_3$. Thus, we consider that TDS may be used as an effective indicator of the extent of pollution. However, the increase of TDS may result from increased water-rock interaction. To determine the extent of groundwater contamination, it is needed to figure out the baseline water quality in Seoul. Furthermore, detailed geochemical studies are required to find out pollution sources and their corresponding hydrochemical parameters.
Groundwater sampled from 24 tube wells of three districts namely Sherpur, Gaibandha and Naogaon in Bangladesh was appraised for their water quality for irrigation and agro-based industrial usage. All waters under test were slightly alkaline to alkaline (pH = 7.2 to 8.4) in nature and were not problematic for crop production. As total dissolved solid (TDS), all groundwater samples were classified as fresh water (TDS<1,000 mg/L) in quality. Electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values reflected that waters under test were under medium salinity (C2), high salinity (C3) and also low alkalinity (S1) hazard classes expressed as C2S1 and C3S1. As regards to EC and soluble sodium percentage (SSP), groundwater samples were graded as good and permissible in category based on soil properties and crop growth. All water samples were free from residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and belonged to suitable in category. Water samples were under soft moderately hard, hard and very hard classes. Manganese, bicarbonate and nitrate ions were considered as major pollutants in some water samples and might pose threat in soil ecosystem for long-term irrigation. For most of the agro-based industrial usage, Fe and Cl were considered as troublesome ions. On the basis of TDS and hardness, groundwater samples were not suitable for specific industry. Some water samples were found suitable for specific industry but none of these waters were suitable for all industries. The relationship between water quality parameters and major ions was established. The correlation between major ionic constituents like Ca, Mg, K, Na, $HCO_3$ and Cl differed significantly. Dominant synergistic relationships were observed between EC-TDS, SAR-SSP, EC-Hardness, TDS-Hardness and RSC-Hardness.
According to the results of the groundwater quality investigation about 230 holes all over the country, the groundwater which was in excess of standard grows larger every year and closed holes increased to 23,457 holes in 1997 from 15,724 holes in 1996. This is the major reasons that water quality contamination, shortage of water quantity, increasing of salinity and so on. There are 7 groundwater salinization sources which are condisered as most important on a regional level. And among theses the Cheju Island groundwater salinization sources are (1) halite solution, (2) natural saline groundwater, (3) sea-water intrusion. The method of taking an isotopes is one of research methods of the origin of groundwater salinization and is used in so many studies because it has very high confidence. $^{18O}O, ^2H, ^3H, ^{14}C$ and so on in an isotopes are frequently used in the method of them. Consequently on this study we analyzed major ions and $^3H$ in groundwater, sea-water and rain of the eastern part of cheju island known as contaminated site from long time ago to examine the origin of groundwater salinization. Relation ratios of the major ions versus chloride ion shows similar tendency to sea-water. This indicates that sea-water entered the groundwater layer. And amount of $^3H$ in holes of the land side is higher than of the sea side. Relation of chloride ion versus $^3$H indicates negative character. Therefore we can think that the reason of groundwater salinization of this part is natural saline groundwater and halite solution by relation.

Groundwater quality monitoring wells, which is over 2,000 in South Korea, were managed to observe groundwater quality since the early 1990s. Groundwater was sampled and analyzed biannually from 781 monitoring wells located in the areas with a high possibility of pollution. The average concentrations of cyanide, mercury, phenols, hexavalent chromium, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylen, and 1.1.1-trichloroethane for 12 years' data of detected cases were above the groundwater quality standard, but the average concentrations of the general quality items such as pH, electric conductivity, nitrate-nitrogen, and chloride, are below the standard. To compare a quality trend for each land-use type of the monitoring site, Sen's method is used for four quality items; chloride, nitrate-nitrogen, pH, and electric conductivity. The upward trend for these items is remarkable in urbideareas and industrial complexes and this trend continues still strongly after 2001. The deviation in a trend slopes of monitoring wells becomes bigger in the mid-2000s. In conclusion, trend analysis using existing monitoring data cidebe effective to forecast the future water quality condition and the solid action to protect groundwater quality should be done in advance using a result of trend analysis.
This paper investigates the current status of Jeju special self-governing province (JSSGP)'s water infrastructure and recommends directions for improvement. JSSGP relies on groundwater for most of its water resources. Recently, water usage has been steadily increasing due to the increase of residents and tourists while the quality of groundwater has been steadily worsening. Deterioration in water quality of groundwater can be seen through the increase in concentration of nitrate nitrogen and microorganisms. To overcome such problems, water consumption must be reduced by water demand management in all fields including residential and agricultural water use. The quality of water resources should be preserved through the management of pollutants. For efficient management of water resources, great efforts should be made to reduce the leakage rates in household and agricultural water, which is currently at the highest level in the country. Furthermore, diversification of water intake sources other than groundwater is needed, especially for agricultural water supply. For water and sewerage facilities, compliance with drinking water quality standards and discharge water quality standards must be achieved through the optimization of operation management. This process requires recruiting professionals, improving existing workers' expertise, and improving facilities.
