  • The pollutants in subsurface soil are advected by groundwater flow and transported by the hydrodynamic dispersion. In this study, laboratory-scale experiments by using a radioisotope were conducted to evaluate the characteristics of the transport and dispersion of pollutants in the soil. The hydraulic model of the laboratory-scale was manufactured based upon its geometric similarity. Tc-99m having a short half-life was used with a tracer and it was injected instantaneously into the soil. Tc-99m milked from a $^{99}Mo/^{99m}Tc$ portable generator fabricated for medical purposes had 0.141 MeV of gamma radiation. The experiments are performed by the different conditions like the variations of groundwater velocity and the results are analyzed by the measured CPS of Tc-99m.

  • Waste lime is produced as by-products in chemical industry, Reuse of waste lime mixed with soil for banking and backfill material in civil works was analysed in this study. For this purpose, environmental effect of waste lime admixtures was tested. Thus, this study presents the leaching characterization of waste lime in laboratory batch and column tests. Countermeasure for reduction of environmental effects was suggested from the test results.

  • Agricultural groundwater use accounts for 51.8% of total groundwater use, so accurate estimation of groundwater use is important for efficient groundwater management. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for estimating the groundwater use of agricultural (rice farming and dry-field farming) wells using regression tree model based on the measured data of 370 wells. Three input variables of the model were evaluated as being significant: well depth, pipe diameter, and pump capacity, and the importance of each variable was 75% for well depth, 17% for pipe diameter, and 8% for pumping capacity. The daily usage of agricultural (rice farming and dry-field farming) wells by the regression tree model was estimated to be very similar to the actual usage, compared to the previous estimation method proposed by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. In the future, it is expected that the reliability of the usage statistics will be improved if additional observed data is secured and this classification method is modified.

  • The variation of groundwater level in Jeju Island is analyzed with the data of precipitation observed from 48 monitoring post and groundwater level observed from 84 monitoring wells during 2001 to 2009. The groundwater level rises in summer and falls in winter. The rise of groundwater level by precipitation is fast and small in the eastern region and slow and large in the western region. However, the speed of fall during the period of no rain is slower in the eastern region than in the western region. It tells that permeability is greater in the eastern region than in the western region. In this paper, we set up the base level of groundwater and calculate recharge volume between the base level and groundwater surface. During the period, the average recharge volume was $9.83{\times}10^9m^3$ and the maximum recharge volume was $2.667{\times}10^{10}m^3$ after the typhoon Nari. With these volume and the recharge masses obtained by applying the recharge ratio of 46.1%, estimated by Jeju Province (2003), the porous ratio over the whole Jeju Island is 16.8% in average and 4.6% in the case of maximum recharge volume just after typhoon Nari. A large difference in the two ratios is because that it takes time for groundwater permeated through the ground just after rain fall to fill up the empty porous part. Although the porous ratios over the whole Jeju Island obtained in this way has a large error, they give us the advantage to roughly estimate the amount of recharged groundwater mass directly from observing the groundwater level.

  • It is fact that many research is advanced about management and security of water resources according to serious problem which is raising its head that conservancy and management of water resources development of population and industry. Ground water of water resources is the source of water resources security with surface water, so it have to be continuous exploitation and research however, until now it researched in separate way from surface water, and it become connect each other for the research in actual condition in recent times. The research analyzed the recharge at the SWAT model, interpreted by used GMS/MODFLOW model for ground water flow change.

  • Furnace slag, a steel industry waste, has been converted into an inexpensive and efficient adsorbent. The product obtained has been utilized for the removal of arsenic from ground water. Kinetic studies have bepn described with the mechanism of adsorption The results from batch studies showed that the As(III) can be removed from the ground water within the pH range 3-7 However the maximum removal was experienced at pH 7.0. Equilibrium was attained within 24 hours. Adsorption data of arsenic correlate well with the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models. The maximum sorption capacity as calculated using Freundlich adsorption isotherm was found to be of 0.004 mg g-1 at pH 7 and $25^{\circ}C$.

  • In the field of soil and groundwater remediation, sustainability was merged into remediation process and green remediation was initiated within the concept of sustainable development. Green remediation was defined and has been already applied to the remediation fields in U.S. In the case of Europe, green remediation has been evaluated for the application of green technology in the remediation industry and they especially defined sustainable remediation following idea of sustainable development. Although green and sustainable remediation is global trends, there are only a few cases about application of green remediation in South Korea. It is needed to develop soil and groundwater remediation technology towards green remediation, considering "Green Growth" as policy direction in South Korea.

  • With the development of industry and standard of living, the quantity of groundwater consumption has been increasing. For the analysis of groundwater, to determine the hydraulic parameters of aquifer is very important. Various numerical methods have been developed to solve aquifer tests and eliminate the subjectivity of traditional graphical type curve methods. The slope-matching method, which matches the slope of the Theis type curve to the slope of the field data, can be used to numerically solve pump tests for both leaky and nonleaky aquifers. A FORTRAN program on based slope-matching method was developed to obtain the transmissivity, storage coefficient, and leaky factor from pumping test data automatically. Results derived from published data show that the improved slope-matching method gives parameters close to the ones derived by the slope-matching method.
