The Island of Cheju plans massive ground water development to meet predicted water demand. Effective management of ground water resources requires impact assessment study. Due to the nature of the island, effects of sea water must be considered. In this work, salt water intrusion, due to hypothetical ground water development in Eastern and Central Cheju Watersheds, is predicted using a sharp-interface model. The model considers simultaneously hydrodynamics of both freshwater and saltwater. The hypothetical ground water development was designed such that it follows closely the regional ground water development plan. The numerical model predicted that the saltwater wedge may intude over 1km depending on the location. This observation leaves doubt on impact assement studies based on freshwater-flow only modeling.
A variety of geophysical well loggings have been conducted to investigate the geological characteristics for basaltic volcanic area in Jeju Island. Specially, there is no precedent case study using geophysical well loggings in Jeju Island. And so, the proper understandings for geological features of Jeju Island are the key to interpret geophysical well logs. Presently, seawater intrusion monitoring systems have been constructed for systematic development and conservation of groundwater resources. As the results of geophysical well loggings in this seawater intrusion monitoring boreholes, the responses of well logs for saturated zone have distinctly identified basalt sequences. In particular, neutron logging, gamma-gamma (density) logging, and resistivity logging have well exhibited the characteristics of lava flows and lithologic boundaries. In hyalocastite, porosity is high, and resistivity is low. Eventually, geophysical well logs are useful for securing sustainable development of groundwater in Jeju Island in that it has identified the characteristics of geological responses.
Water resources which is formed of surface and groundwater, are considered as one of the pivotal natural resources worldwide. Since last century, the rapid population growth as well as accelerated industrialization and explosive urbanization lead to boost demand for groundwater for domestic, industrial and agricultural use. In fact, better management of groundwater can play crucial role in sustainable development; therefore, determining accurate location of groundwater based groundwater potential mapping is indispensable. In recent years, integration of machine learning techniques, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are popular and effective methods employed for groundwater potential mapping. For determining the status of the integrated approach, a systematic review of 94 directly relevant papers were carried out over the six previous years (2015-2020). According to the literature review, the number of studies published annually increased rapidly over time. The total study area spanned 15 countries, and 85.1% of studies focused on Iran, India, China, South Korea, and Iraq. 20 variables were found to be frequently involved in groundwater potential investigations, of which 9 factors are almost always present namely slope, lithology (geology), land use/land cover (LU/LC), drainage/river density, altitude (elevation), topographic wetness index (TWI), distance from river, rainfall, and aspect. The data integration was carried random forest, support vector machine and boost regression tree among the machine learning techniques. Our study shows that for optimal results, groundwater mapping must be used as a tool to complement field work, rather than a low-cost substitute. Consequently, more study should be conducted to enhance the generalization and precision of groundwater potential map.
The increase in impervious surfaces due to urban development has caused a groundwater drawdown through the reduction of underground infiltration, flood disaster due to increased rainfall runoff and environmental pollution in higher pollutant concentrations of first flush rainwater. As an alternative to these problems, the needs of low impact development (LID) techniques is increasing in urban areas. In this study, the restoration efficiency of water cycle was assessed at a residential site development applied with the LID rainwater management system. The results of monitoring the water cycling showed that the efficiency of water cycle of LID rainwater management system was improved 41% more than that of conventional methods.
In order to provide information for proper management of groundwater resources, it is necessary to estimate the rise time of groundwater level by calculating the delay time between the time series of precipitation and groundwater level and to understand the characteristics of groundwater level variation. In this study, total delay time (TDT) and cross correlation coefficient between the moving averaged precipitation generated by using the moving average method to take into account the preceding precipitation and the groundwater level were calculated and analyzed for the nine groundwater level monitoring wells in the Pyoseon watershed in the southeast of Jeju Island. As a result, when the moving averaged precipitation was used, the correlation with the groundwater level was higher in all monitoring wells than in the case of using the raw precipitation, so that it was possible to more clearly estimate the delay time between precipitation and groundwater level. When using the moving averaged precipitation, it had cross correlation coefficients of up to 0.57 ~ 0.58 with the time series data of the groundwater level, and had a relatively high correlation when considering the preceding precipitation of about 24 days on average. The TDT was about 32 days on average, and it was confirmed that the consideration of preceding precipitation plays an important role in estimating the TDT because the days of moving averaged precipitation greatly influences the calculation of the TDT. In addition, through the use of moving averaged precipitation, we found an error in estimating the TDT due to the use of raw precipitation. Through the method of estimating the TDT used in this study and the use of the R code for estimating the TDT presented in the appendix of this paper, it will be possible to estimate the TDT for other regions in the future relatively easily.

The effect of soil damage on the physicochemical characteristics and activity of the soil microbial community is not well known. This study investigates this relationship by analyzing 11 soil samples collected from various points of soil damage across Gyeonggi-do. Soil damage resulted from forest fires, landslides, and development areas, with their impacts most severe on the topsoil layer (0-30 cm). Dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activities were notably higher at locations damaged by forest fires compared to other sites. While enzyme activities in soils influenced by landslides and development areas were relatively low, sites with a pollution history exhibited elevated dehydrogenase activity, likely due to past microbial response to the pollution. Additionally, an assessment of carbon substrate usability by soil microorganisms indicated higher substrate availability in areas impacted by forest fires, contrasting with lower availability in landslide and development sites. Statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between organic content of sand and clay and microbial activity. These findings provide valuable insights into soil damage and associated restoration research, as well as management strategies.
There are groundwater trouble by high-salinity yield inducing sea-water intrusion in Cheju Island. It is used groundwater-GIS(Well-lnfo) in the maintenance and management of groundwater in Cheju Island to grasp groundwater trouble area and cause of high-salinity yield. For 16 wells certain to yield high-salinity, we logged specific electrical conductivity(EC) and tried to get hold of freshwater and saltwater relationship. As result of distribution of $Cl^-$ by depth, it is showed up groundwater trouble by high-salinity yield in the east coastal area and the partly north coastal area. The reason of high-salinity groundwater yield are low-groundwater level by the structure of geology and low-hydraulic gradient etc. There is necessity for management to development and use of groundwater in the high-salinity area, special management area.
An integrated water resources management is highly required to use efficient water and preserve water quality due to the limits of water resources development and water pollution. K-WEAP was developed, which supports the water resources planning and evaluation within a fully integrated interactive system. In this study, we present three applications of K-WEAP. First, we examined the usefulness of K-WEAP as a water resources planning tool through its application to the National Water Resources Plan. Second, the conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater in the Geum river basin with K-WEAP was evaluated, and its results show how to support to set up a sustainable groundwater management plan. Finally, we confirmed the function of the integrated water quantity and quality management in K-WEAP, which conducted by comparing the simulated results of water quality in both QUAL2E and K-WEAP.

Hundreds of contaminated sites have been generated due to the past mismagement of toxic substances, the lack of adequate environmental controls and ignorance of the potential environmental impacts of general activities in Canada. The general public, industry and governments have been addressing the contaminated sites with a number of cleanup responses. Environmental protection and remediation have become top priorities for the public and private sectors alike in Canada. Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and Canada's Green Plan were followed by provincial and territorial laws and policies to regulate contaminated sites. The National Contaminated Site Remediation Program(NCSRP) was initiated in 1989. It has been administered through bilateral agreements between the federal and participating provincial/territorial governments. They have committed a total of $250 million toward orphan site cleanup and technology development/demonstration over a five year period. The federal government has committed an additional $25 million to assess contaminated sites on federal crown land. Over 40 orphan high-risk contaminated sites, over 230 federal sites and over 35 technology development/demonstration projects have been addressed. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment has developed a series of guidance documents to ensure a consistent and successful implementation of the Program. The management/regulation scheme of contaminated sites generally consists of: 1) identifying and investigating sites, 2) determining site contamination, 3) recognizing responsibility and liability, 4) assessing priority for remediation, 5) activation, evaluation and implementing remediation options, and 6) documenting remediation completion. The NCSRP supported the successful development/demonstration of a wide range of innovative remedial technologies. They are related to stabilization/solidification, thermal washing/flushing, advanced oxidation, sonics, and groundwater contaminated with hydrocarbons, PAHS, PCBs, heavy metals, and other hazardous pollutants in a variety of site environments.
Groundwater pumping from a well has different impacts on streamflow depletion because hydraulic properties of the aquifer and the stream bed differ depending on its location. Therefore, quantitative assessment of streamflow depletion due to each groundwater pumping with different well locations is needed for the effective groundwater development and streamflow management. In this study, a watershed-based surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to assess the streamflow depletion near stream reach due to groundwater pumping from a well located within the Sinduncheon watershed. The arbitrary 50 wells among the currently used groundwater pumping wells were selected within the study area and the streamflow responses to each groundwater pumping were simulated at nearby and downstream reaches. In particular, the applicability of the Stream Depletion Factor (SDF) and Stream Bed Factor (SBF), which are widely used for evaluating the degree of streamflow depletion due to groundwater pumping, was evaluated. The simulated results demonstrated that the streamflow depletion rate divided by the pumping rate significantly differ depending on well locations and distance between well and stream, showing a wide range of values from below 20% to above 90%. From the simulated results, it was found out that the SDF or the SBF can be a partial referred value but not an absolute criterion in determining whether a pumping well has a great impact on streamflow depletion or not.
