Induced polarization (IP) method is based on the measurement of a polarization effect known as overvoltage of the ground. IP techniques have been usually used to find mineral deposits, however, nowadays widely applied to hydrogeological investigations, surveys of groundwater pollution and foundation studies on construction sites. IP surveys can be classified by its source type, i.e., time-domain IP estimating chargeability, frequency-domain IP measuring frequency effect (FE), and complex resistivity (CR) and spectral IP (SIP) measuring complex resistivity. Recently, electromagnetic-based IP has been studied to avoid the requirement for spike electrodes to be placed in the ground. In order to understand IP methods in this study, we: 1) classify IP surveys by source type and measured data and illustrate their basic theories, 2) describe historical development of each IP forward modeling and inversion algorithm, and finally 3) introduce various case studies of IP measurements.

The monitoring methods for volcanic gases are divided into remote sensing and direct gas sampling approaches. In the remote sensing approach, COSPEC and Li-COR are used to measure $SO_2$ and $CO_2$, respectively, with FT-IR for detection of a range of volcanic gases. However, the remote sensing approach is not applicable to Mt. Baegdu, where the atmospheric contents of volcanic gases are very low as a result of the strong interaction of volcanic gases with the nearby surface water and groundwater. On the other hand, the direct gas sampling approach involves the collection of volcanic gases from volcanic vents or fumaroles and the subsequent laboratory analysis, thus making it possible to measure even very low levels of volcanic gases. The direct sampling approach can be subdivided into the evacuated bottle method and the flow-through bottle method. In applying both methods, sampling bottles typically contain reaction media to trap specific volcanic gases. For example, NaOH solution(Giggenbach bottle), $NH_4OH$ solution, and acid condensates have been experimented for volcanic gas sampling. Once taken from vents and fumaroles, the samples of volcanic gases are pretreated and subsequently analyzed for volcanic gases using GC, IC, HPLC, titrimetry, TOC-IC, or ICP-MS. Recently, there has been the increasing number of evidences on the potential volcanic activity of Mt. Baegdu. However, little technical development has been made for the sampling and analysis of volcanic gases in Korea. In the present work, we reviewed various volcanic gas monitoring methods, and provided the detailed information on the monitoring methods applied to Mt. Baegdu.

The objective of this study is the quantitative analysis of climate change effects by performing several statistical analyses with hydrometeorological data sets for past 30 years in Geum river watershed. Temperature, precipitation, relative humidity data sets were collected from eight observation stations for 37 years(1973~2009) in Geum river watershed. River level data was collected from Gongju and Gyuam gauge stations for 36 years(1973~2008) considering rating curve credibility problems and future long-term runoff modeling. Annual and seasonal year-to-year variation of hydrometeorological components were analyzed by calculating the average, standard deviation, skewness, and coefficient of variation. The results show precipitation has the strongest variability. Run test, Turning point test, and Anderson Exact test were performed to check if there is randomness in the data sets. Temperature and precipitation data have randomness and relative humidity and river level data have regularity. Groundwater level data has both aspects(randomness and regularity). Linear regression and Mann-Kendal test were performed for trend test. Temperature is increasing yearly and seasonally and precipitation is increasing in summer. Relative humidity is obviously decreasing. The results of this study can be used for the evaluation of the effects of climate change on water resources and the establishment of future water resources management technique development plan.
Clay minerals play a major role in the geochemical cycles of metals in the Critical Zone, the Earth surface-layer ranging from the groundwater bottom to the tree tops. Atomistic scale research of the very fine particles can help understand the fundamental mechanisms of the important geochemical processes and possibly apply to development of hybrid nanomaterials. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can provide atomistic level insights into the crystal structures of clay minerals and the chemical reactivity. Classical MD simulations use a force field which is a parameter set of interatomic pair potentials. The ClayFF force field has been widely used in the MD simulations of dioctahedral clay minerals as the force field was developed mainly based on dioctahedral phyllosilicates. The ClayFF is often used also for trioctahedral mineral simulations, but disagreement exits in selection of the interatomic potential parameters, particularly for Mg atom-types of the octahedral sheet. In this study, MD simulations were performed for trioctahedral clay minerals such as brucite, lizardite, and talc, to test how the two different Mg atom types (i.e., 'mgo' or 'mgh') affect the simulation results. The structural parameters such as lattice parameters and interatomic distances were relatively insensitive to the choice of the parameter, but the vibrational power spectra of hydroxyls were more sensitive to the choice of the parameter particularly for lizardite.

The main risk factors of tunnel excavation through urban areas are ground settlement and surface sink which caused by ground conditions, excavation method, groundwater condition, excavation length, support method, etc. In the process of ground settlement assessment, the numerical analysis should be conducted considering the displacement and stress due to tunnel excavation. Therefore a technique that can simplify such process and easily evaluate the influence of tunnel excavation is needed. This study focused on the tunnelling-induced ground settlement which is main consideration of underground safety impact assessment. The parametric numerical analyses were performed considering such parameters as ground conditions, tunnel depth, and lateral distance from tunnel center line, etc. A simplified ground settlement evaluation chart was suggested by analyzing tendency of ground subsidence, lateral influence area and character by depth. The applicability of the suggested settlement evaluation chart was verified by comparative numerical analysis of settlement characteristics.

The recent increase of ground subsidence in Korea requires the development of technology for predicting the possibility of ground subsidence. Eighteen parameters affecting the ground subsidence for pre-excavation are classified into 6 categories considering ground types, groundwater, and external factors. Eighteen parameters consists of a table which gives ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation(GSRp). Certain scores are given to these parameters after they are divided into several classes considering the importance and the credibility of parameters and the engineering judgements of the authors. Because of the difference of ground subsidence factors depending on the ground and field conditions, weighting factors for the individual factor and for the each category are multiplied. Weighting factors are calculated from citation frequencies of influencing factors. Ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation can be quantified by considering the individual score of each parameter and weighting factors for the individual factor and for the each category. The suggested GSRp tables obtained from this study are expected to be used by engineers for the estimation of ground subsidence risk ratings for pre-excavation sites.
Induced polarization (IP) is useful for mineral exploration and hydrogeological studies by visualizing the electrochemical reactions at the interface between polarized minerals and groundwater. Frequency-domain IP (FDIP) is not actively applied to field surveys because it takes longer to acquire data, despite its higher data quality than conventional time-domain IP. However, data quality is more important in current mineral exploration as the targets gradually shift to deep or low-grade ore bodies. In addition, the measurement time reduced by automated instrumentation increases the potential for FDIP field applications. Therefore, we demonstrate that FDIP can detect mineral exploration targets by performing geophysical logging in the boreholes of a skarn deposit, in South Korea. Alternating current (AC) resistivity, percent frequency effect (PFE) and metal factor (MF) were calculated from impedance values obtained at two different frequencies. Skarn zones containing magnetite or pyrite showed relatively low AC resistivity, high PFE, and high MF compared to other zones. Therefore, FDIP surveys are considered to be useful for mineral exploration.
At the mudstone slope located on the roadside of the Seokri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this study was performed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stability of slope through seepage analysis according to the precipitation type of the mudstone slope, referring to the actual case of slope failure. For this, precise geological survey, geophysical exploration and drilling survey for the slope where the failure occurred were performed and followed by analysis of detailed soil layer. For the section where failure surface located, the durability reduction of rocks was measured through slaking/swelling tests and the permeability was measured through in-situ permeability tests for each soil layer. In addition, the change of strength parameter and process of instability were analyzed by back analysis, using Talren 97 and Slope/W programs, in the slope. By applying different precipitation conditions to the geographical conditions of the slope that had actual failure records, the slope stability was analyzed by seepage analysis according to duration of rainfall and rise of groundwater level resulting from the flow of rainfall caused by development of geological structures and the slope surface condition.

Due to frequent occurrences of concentrated heavy rainfall caused by abnormal climate conditions in recent years, collapses of steep slopes have been occurring frequently due to surface erosion and increased pore water pressure. Various methods are being applied to prevent slope collapses, such as increasing the resistance to movement and reducing pore water pressure. Research on these methods has been consistently conducted as they provide an efficient response to slope collapses by satisfying both the conditions of resistance to movement and pore water pressure simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, we propose an upward slope reinforcement method by burying drainage materials with an upward slope inclination, instead of the conventional horizontal application. This approach aims to satisfy both slope reinforcement and drainage functions effectively, offering a comprehensive solution for slope stabilization. Furthermore, to determine the optimal burial angle that exhibits the most effective reinforcement and drainage effects of the proposed method, we investigated the reinforcement and drainage effects under conditions where the horizontal drainage materials were set at angles ranging from 0° to 60° in increments of 10° on a representative cross-section. Additionally, indoor model experiments were conducted under the conditions of 40°, which showed the most outstanding drainage effect, and 20°, which exhibited the highest safety factor, to validate the numerical analysis results. The results showed that the burial angle of 40° exhibits a relatively higher drainage effect as with the numerical analysis results, while the angle of 20° results in inadequate drainage and observed slope collapse.
An Excavation Damaged Zone(EDZ) caused by blasting impact changes rock properties, in situ stress distribution, etc., and its effects are noticeable at around a radioactive waste repository located at deep underground. In particular, the increase in permeability due to the formation of cracks may significantly increase the amount of groundwater inflow and the possibility of radioactive nuclide outflow. In this study, FLAC2D and FLAC3D were used to analyze the mechanical and thermal behaviors for three categories: a)No EDZ, b)Uniform EDZ, and c)Random EDZ. It was found that the tunnel displacement in the Random EDZ case was 423% higher than that in the No EDZ case and was 16% higher than that in the Uniform EDZ case. Tunnel inflow in the Random EDZ was also 17.3% and 10.8% higher than that in the No EDZ and the Uniform EDZ case, respectively. The permeability around the tunnel was increased by up to 10 times in the corner of the tunnel wall and roof due to the stress redistribution after excavation. From the computer simulation, it was found that the permeability around the tunnel wall was partially increased but the overall tunnel inflow was decreased with increase of stress ratio. Mechanical analysis using FLAC 3D showed similar results. Slight difference between 2D and 3D could be explained with the development of plastic zone during the advance of tunnel excavation in 3D.
