  • Estimating equivalent soil model which represents an actual soil structure and its electrical characteristics, is extremely improtant for good substation grounding system design and analysis. Since the equivalent soil model is deduced based on the measured apparent soil resistivity - generally obtained from Wenner's 4-point method, reasonable and accurate measuring technique and procedure guarantee good grounding system design and analysis. The paper aims to show the importance of reasonable enough probe spacing by presenting the influence of soil modelling to estimation and measurement of grounding resistance of substation grounding grid.

  • A ground electrode subjected to lightning surge current shows the transient impedance behaviors. The ground electrode for protection against lightning should be evaluated in view of the transient grounding impedance and conventional grounding impedance, not ground resistance. The transient impedance characteristics of ground electrodes are influenced by the shape of ground electrode and the soil characteristics, as well as the waveform of lightning surge current. In order to propose a simulation method of analyzing the transient impedance characteristics of the grounding system in practical use, this paper suggests a theoretical analysis method of distributed parameter circuit model to simulate the transient impedance characteristics of counterpoise subjected to lightning surge current. EMTP and Matlab programs were employed to compute the transient grounding impedances of three counterpoises with different lengths. As a consequence, the simulated results using the proposed distributed parameter circuit model are in good agreement with the measured results.

  • A grounding system is generally composed of several vertical, horizontal electrodes or grids. Excessive ground potential rises due to adjacent grounding electrodes can cause failures or misoperation of electronic devices and control systems. It is therefore necessary for computer-related and information-oriented equipment to be placed at a sufficient distance from the areas influenced by grounding electrodes. In this paper, in order to propose a method for evaluating the ground potential rise and interference in the vicinity of vertical grounding electrodes, the experimental and theoretical results on the potential interference between vertical grounding electrodes and its frequency dependence were described. The ground potential rise is sharply decreased with increasing the distance between grounding electrodes. In case that the separation of vertical grounding electrodes is less than 1.5[m], the potential interference coefficient was greater than 0.1 and linearly increased with the frequency of the test current within the frequency of 1[MHz].

  • For accuracy of an experiment, measure changing of grounding resistance by short period after construction and investigated the efficiency of grounding's different methode of parallel connection. We could confirm on measurement's accuracy, error through comparing the theoretical value and measured value. Therefore, reduction ratio can be expected from execution measurement to receive a target resistance value. By the result, we could evaluate the method of rod grounding electrode's proper execution

  • Although DC ground resistance is a good index of performance for a grounding system, it does not reflect the grounding performance during the transient states. Besides, impulse ground impedance, which is defined by a ratio of the peak value of transient ground potential rise to the peak value of impulse current, cannot be an absolute performance index due to its dependence on impulse current shape. In this paper, a grounding performance of needle-typed ground rod has been compared with simple ground rod using HIFREQ[1], which is an engineering electro-magnetic code based on MoM (Method of Moment).

  • This paper describes the analysis of deterioration characteristics for connection factor according to connection method of grounding system. The connection method of grounding system is specified in IEC standard. In order to analyze the deterioration characteristics for connection factor, deterioration test was carried out when the connection factor was buried in salt water and underground. The test connection factors were C-type sleeve, clamp, and exothermic welding. As a consequence, most of the connection factor was corroded, and the electrical resistance decreased after deterioration. The analytical results can be used to establish the safety of grounding system.

  • In order to analyze the frequency dependance of ground impedance in grounding grids for lightning and surge protection, a novel method for measuring the ground impedance as a function of frequency were experimentally investigated. The experiments were carried out in rectangular grounding grids with $6{\times}8$ conductors of 22 $mm^2$ buried at a depth of 0.5 m. The test current was injected by the variable frequency inverter whose frequency is linearly controlled for the established period in the range of 5∼500 KHz. The amplitude and phase of ground impedance were calculated from the waveforms of the test current and ground potential rise measured by the band-pass filter tuned in a specific frequency. The frequency dependence of ground impedance was mainly caused by the inductive current flowing through grounding conductors over the frequency of 100 KHz. The proposed measurement method of ground impedance would be applicable to evaluate the transient response characteristics in lightning protection grounding systems.

  • The number of electric railway failures will increase due to the external and internal effects of electric railroads. The grounding test with 25,000V is to artificially test the transmission voltage to ground, and it is possible to cause risks of electric shock and other equipment insulation damage in neighboring enclosure. In 2016, method of fault localization changed to low - voltage at 380V from artificially high- voltage in the grounding tests since opening of Seoul Metropolitan Express Railway; The method is more accurate and safer rather than the previous one because it gets more data from unlimited grounding tests. However, an electric current falls on the track section where the track branches and vehicle bases with many lines. To precisely detect a transitive phenomenon, it is necessary to continuously study and additionally install.

  • Grounding grid design of substation and power generating plant has been conducted based on IEEE Std 80 or 665, which provides simple formula to estimate grounding performance such as grounding resistance, max. step and touch voltage. Although these formula are applicable for many situations, they contains many assumptions and consequent limits of application. This paper shows the limits of IEEE formula and the virtue of estimating grounding performance of grid using numerical method or computer program.
