  • When surges and electromagnetic pulses from lightning or power conversion devices are considered, it is desirable to evaluate grounding system performance as grounding impedance. In the case of large-sized grounding electrodes or long counterpoises, the grounding impedance is increased with increasing the frequency of injected current. The grounding impedance is increased by the inductance of grounding electrodes. This paper presents the measured results of frequency-dependent grounding impedance and impedance phase as a function of the length of counterpoises. In order to analyze the frequency-dependent grounding impedance of the counterpoises, the frequency-dependent current dissipation rates were measured and simulated by the distributed parameter circuit model reflecting the frequency-dependent relative resistivity and permittivity of soil. As a result, the ground current dissipation rate is proportional to the soil resistivity near the counterpoises in a low frequency. On the other hand, the ground current dissipation near the injection point is increased as the frequency of injected current increases. Since the high frequency ground current cannot reach the far end of long counterpoise, the grounding impedance of long counterpoise approaches that of the short one in the high frequency. The results obtained from this work could be applied in design of grounding systems.

  • This paper presents the transient and conventional grounding impedance behaviors of large grid grounding system associated with the injection point of impulse current The measurement methods consider two possible errors in the grounding-system impedances: (1) ground mutual resistance due to current flow through ground from the ground electrode to be measured to the current auxiliary, (2) ac mutual coupling between the current test lead and the potential test lead The test circuit was set to reduce the error factors. The transient grounding impedance depends on the rise time and injection point of impulse current It is effective that grounding conductor is connected to the center of the large grid grounding system.

  • Since transmission and distribution neutral wires are connected with a substation grounding grid, it is very difficult to measure grounding resistance of isolated substation grounding grid after the substation is energized. It is impractical to isolate the grounding grid from other parallel connections such as distribution line neutrals and overhead ground wires for grounding resistance measurement only. In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a novel measurement method of grounding resistance of isolated substation grounding grid. For this method, grounding current division factor and conventional FOP(Fall-Of-Potential) profiles were measured at power supplying 154[kV] substation. The obtained FOP profile was processed with the measured grounding current division factor to produce the grounding resistance of isolated grounding grid. Simulated FOP profile agreed well with the measured one showing the validity of the proposed method.

  • The transient characteristics of grounding systems play a major role in the protection of power equipments, electronic circuits and info-communication facilities against surges which arise from lightning or ground faults. Electronic devices are very weak against lightning surges injected from grounding systems and can be damaged. The malfunction and damage of electronic circuits bring about bad operation performances, a lot of economical losses, and etc. Therefore, in order to obtain the effective protection measure of electronic devices from overvoltages and lightning surges, the analysis of the transient grounding impedances in essential. One of this work is to examine the transient behaviors of grounding impedances under steplike currents for various grounding systems. And the other of this work is to evaluate the transient behaviors of a grid with rods under impulse currents and to investigate the effect of grounding lead wire. Transient grounding impedances of a grid with rods under impulse current waves have been measured as a parameter of the length of the grounding leads. Z-t, Z-i and V-i curves of transient grounding impedance under impulse current waveforms have been measured and analyzed. It was found that the grounding impedance gives the inductive, resistive and capacitive aspects under steplike current. Transient grounding impedance characteristics were very different with shapes, geometries of ground electrodes. Also, they were dependent on the waveform and magnitude of impulse current.

  • In 22.9kV underground distribution system, power cables are provided with multiple-point ground in which each neutral line of the distribution cable(A, B, C phases) and three-wire common grounded at every connecting section. But in such grounding methods, circulating current flows between the neutral wire and grounding wire. And power loss due to circulating current also occurs in all conductors. Therefore it is getting necessary reducing circulating current in underground distribution system. This paper presents improved grounding method to overcome such problems. The proposed grounding method eliminates circulating current in the neutral line effectively and is verified that there is no electrical problem or any ineffectiveness of operating protection systems. These analyses are carried out by EMTP/ATPDraw to compare each grounding methods in steady and transient state. This grounding method suggested in this paper can be applied on real distribution system after field tests considering elimination of circulating current was implemented.

  • Grounding systems set the reference voltage level of electric circuits and suppress the Ground Potential Rise (GPR) by flowing fault currents to the ground safely. There are several parameters which evaluate the performance of grounding systems as ground resistance, touch voltage and step voltage. The touch and step voltages, which is called "risk voltage", are especially important to ensure the safety of human body. This paper dealt with the influence of current sources with the different frequency components on the touch and the step voltages. Three types of current sources as commercial frequency, square wave, and surge with the fast risetime of $50\;ns{\sim}500\;ns$ were used to analyze the risk voltages in a grounding system. The risk voltages showed remarkable difference in the same current amplitude depending on the current sources, and increased linearly with the current amplitude in the same current source. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the risk voltages can be evaluated by a small current application in large-scale grounding systems and the possible largest risk voltage can be calculated by a surge current with the risetime of 200 ns or a current source with the same frequency component as the surge current.

  • One of key parameters on lightning protection system design of electric, information and communication system is grounding impedance. Earth impedance includes numerous information about earthing performance of grounding system. This paper suggests grounding impedance measuring device which is comprised of wideband current source, voltage and current measuring components. We used IQ Demodulation to measure more accurate phase difference of voltage and current. The range of frequency is up to 1 MHz that is IEEE defined as the range of lightning surge. We compared developed grounding impedance measuring device with existing one to test its performance, and we used grounding system while we implemented measurement and analysing by using fall of potential method IEEE Std.81 proposed.

  • This paper describes analysis of risk voltage for grounding electrode where earth leakage current is injected. To assess risk voltage of grounding electrode, the grounding simulator and CDEGS program were used to obtain measured data and theoretical results of this study. The grounding simulator was composed of a hemispherical water tank, AC power supply, a movable potentiometer, and test grounding electrodes. The shapes of grounding electrode model was ground rod. The potential rise was measured by grounding simulator, and the touch and step voltages were computed by CDEGS program. As a consequence, the potential rise of ground rod abruptly decreases with increasing the distance from the grounding electrode to the point to be tested. The touch voltage above the ground rod was low, but the step voltage was high. The measured results were compared with the computer calculated data and were known in good agreement.

  • This paper presents the grounding impedance behaviors of counterpoise exposed to impulse currents. The transient and conventional grounding impedances of three counterpoises having the length of 10, 30 and 50[m] were measured and analyzed as a function of the injection point of impulse currents. As a result, the trend of the conventional grounding impedances measured as a function of injection of impulse current is similar to the transient grounding impedance of counterpoise. The injection point of impulse current has great influence on the transient grounding impedance characteristics of counterpoise. The transient grounding impedance characteristics in a short time range are strongly dependent on the length of counterpoise. The transient characteristics of grounding impedance of 10[m] counterpoise subjected to the impulse current was capacitive behavior, on the other hand, those of 30[m] and 50[m] counterpoises were inductive behavior. It is found that the grounding conductor should be connected to the central point of counterpoise.

  • The current distribution passing through grounding electrode is required for calculating an impedance of grounding electrode using the electromagnetic field model. In this paper the numerical calculation for currents passing through a grounding electrode as a function of frequency was given. The proposed approach is based on the wire antenna model(AM) in the frequency domain. The Pocklington's equation driven from the wire antenna theory was numerically calculated by the Galerkin's method. The triangle function was applied to both the basis function and the weighting function. The current distribution of a horizontal ground electrode was simulated in MATLAB. Also these results were compared with the data obtained from the CDEGS HIFREQ calculation.
