  • Fire fighters are exposed to the risk of many accidents during fire suppression, especially near the high voltage circuit. In order to prevent and analyze the electric shock accidents, measurement of water resistance is crucial. However, this has been one of the overlooked research areas and it has been very difficult to measure the mixed up resistance components separately. In this paper, we measured a total resistance of apparatus and regarded it as a serial resistance of contact resistance and length dependant resistance. Measuring the resistance by varying the length of water stream, the variable resistance and fixed contact resistance appear, which are used to calculate the both components of resistances. In addition, the resistance of fire hose can be calculated from the parallel circuit which is formed by grounding the fire hose with the resistance of water stream. Results show that we can successfully measure the resistance per unit length of water stream and fire hose, thereby proving that this method is a facile way to measure water and fire hose resistance. However, many experiments are still required to obtain the precise contact resistance of ground under various condition and the resistance between the human body and fire hose.

  • Recently, there has been an increase of the use of ground system for lightning protection called deeply driven grounding electrode. In the case of deeply driven grounding electrode, the rod electrode is equipped perpendicularly and deeply, therefore, it has a benefit to have less restriction of place compared to mesh grid electrode. However, ground impedance is largely changed by the local earth resistivity, so it requires a detailed analysis of the ground structure when planning. The measurement of earth resistivity by existing Wenner's method has been widely used, however, this method can not find out a change in the local ground resistance and it shows the result outwardly to be difficult to estimate exact depth. Therefore, this study analyzed the ground structure as 2-D image using 96 channels measurement facility and tried to analyze change in the local ground resistance and depth of the ground in order to design a deeply driven electrode effectively for lightning protection. It used Wenner alpha method dipole-dipole method and Schlumberger method for 2-D image analysis of the ground resistivity ma based on, it the result was compared with the ground structure analyzed with the result using the CDEGS and Wenner 1-D method.

  • In the companion paper of the present paper, a coast down test method to determine the resistance forces on running vehicle based on the distance-time measurement was explained along with the suggestions to improve its accuracy and testing methodology. In the present paper some of the suggestions discussed previously are implemented and actually road tested to see the applicability of the improved method(short distance method) in the field. From the results. it is shown that the short distance method which requires only 600m long proving ground road gives at least comparable results on the accuracy compared to the original S-t method which requires 2000m. It is hoped that the present method be further refiend to give more accurate results.

  • In these days, the common grounding systems are adapted in most large structures. In order to evaluate the performance of grounding system, it is needed to measure ground impedance. Measuring methods of ground impedance for a large scale grounding systems have not been yet presented in detail. In this paper, we analyze earth mutual resistance and mutual coupling of $15{\times}15m$ grounding grid in different arrangements of auxiliary electrode. As a results, the auxiliary electrodes are installed where the error rate due to earth mutual resistance is less than 5%. Also, the potential lead is installed at obtuse angle from the current lead and the overlapped length between potential lead and grounding grid are minimized.

  • In this application study, field pilot tests were performed to evaluate the validity of a proposed formula between the exerted electrical energy and SPT N-value based on the result of the basic study. Measurement sensors and recording system were developed to obtain exerted motor current and drilling depth in a field. By using the correlation formula proposed in the basic study, the measured motor current and boring speed were applied to predict SPT N-value and the predicted N-values were compared to SPT N-value of site exploration. From the comparisons it is verified that the exerted electrical energy to bore ground might be used to predict SPT N-value and pile tip location.

  • As construction for road tunnel is increasing, various geotechnical conditions can be faced during the construction stage. Especially, if the tunnel is located in limestone area, many kinds of site investigations such as in-situ boring, electrical resistance survey, TSP(Tunnel Seismic Prediction) and etc., are conducted before and during the construction. By conducting these preliminary tests, location, size, and filling materials in limestone cavities can be approximately estimated. Once some cavities which can be harmful for tunnel safety are predicted, methods for ground reinforcement and tunnel excavation, corresponding those ground conditions, have to be established and verified by measurement data and numerical analysis. If necessary, invert lining should be also considered. In this paper, by studying some cases of tunnels constructed in limestone area, predicted problems during construction and rational countermeasures for those are presented.

  • Measuring ground resistance is a typical way of performance evaluation of a grounding electrode. Among various ground resistance measurement methods, FOP (Fall-Of-Potential) method has been widely used, especially in case of a relatively large grounding electrode such as a substation grounding mesh grid Since FOP measurement line has to be increased as the size of grounding electrode increases, however, it is often that securing long enough FOP-line is practically impossible. In this paper, a sophisticated interpretation method of FOP measurement ma which is applicable to large grounding electrode networks, is presented.

  • This paper presents a comparison on the resistance and characteristics of transient response of grounding systems under surge currents using frequency domain electromagnetic field analysis software package and field test. Analysis is done by computer model, based on electromagnetic field theory approach, that accurately takes into account frequency dependent characteristics of the system. The transient performance of three grounding systems is analyzed by comparison of frequency dependent impedance and the maximal transient GPR. A double exponential lighting surge current is injected at one corner of the grounding systems. The transient GPRs a rod grounding systems are higher than mesh or electrolytic grounding systems. Af field test, the results of resistance measurement and time-variant of ground resistance slightly reduce electorlytic grounding systems less than rod and mesh grounding systems.

  • The electrical resistivity method is a well-known geophysical method for observing underground conditions, (such as anomalies) and the properties of soil and rock (such as porosity, saturation, and pore fluid characteristics). The shape of electrodes used in an electrical resistivity survey depends on the purpose of the survey and installation conditions. Most electrodes for field applications are cylindrical for sufficient contact with the ground, while some are conically sharpened at their tips for convenient penetration. Previous study only derived theoretical equations for rod-shaped electrodes with spherical tips. In this study, the theoretical resistance for two cylindrical electrodes with conical tips is derived and verified experimentally. The influence of the penetration depth and tip on the measurement is also discussed.

  • This paper introduces the method to utilize a terminal ground as a radiator only using reactive components without an antenna structure. Characteristics of the proposed antenna is compared with that of the meander IFA on the same ground plane($40{\times}20mm^2$) for the bluetooth band. From simulation and measurement data, it is found that the proposed antenna using only capacitors provides the highest radiation efficiency. This is because of that the higher inductance reduces radiation resistance of a ground and the capacitor has a lower loss resistance comparing to that of the IFA or the inductor. In spite of the high radiation efficiency, the area ($5{\times}2.5mm^2$) of the proposed antenna is less than half of the area ($12{\times}2.5mm^2$) of the IFA.
