In the present study, a methodology for developing fragilities of arch concrete dams to assess their performance against seismic hazards is introduced. Firstly, the probability risk and fragility curves are presented, followed by implementation and representation of the way this method is used. Amirkabir arch concrete dam was subjected to non-linear dynamic analyses. A modified three dimensional rotating smeared crack model was used to take the nonlinear behavior of mass concrete into account. The proposed model considers major characteristics of mass concrete. These characteristics are pre-softening behavior, softening initiation criteria, fracture energy conservation, suitable damping mechanism and strain rate effect. In the present analysis, complete fluid-structure interaction is included to account for appropriate fluid compressibility and absorptive reservoir boundary conditions. In this study, the Amirkabir arch concrete dam is subjected to a set of 8 three-component earthquakes each scaled to 10 increasing intensity levels. Using proposed nonlinear smeared crack model, nonlinear analysis is performed where the structure is subjected to a large set of scaled and un-scaled ground motions and the maximum responses are extracted for each one and plotted. Based on the results, fragility curves were plotted according to various and possible damages indexes. Discrete damage probabilities were calculated using statistical methods for each considered performance level and incremental nonlinear analysis. Then, fragility curves were constructed based on the lognormal distribution assumption. Two damage indexes were introduced and compared to one another. The results indicate that the dam has a proper stability under earthquake conditions at MCE level. Moreover, displacement damages index is more conservative and impractical in the fragility analysis than tensional damage index.

In this paper, simplified modeling approach describing the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete columns is discussed. The inelastic response of a reinforced concrete column or pier subjected to cyclic deformation reversals or earthquake ground motion is evaluated by use of lumped hysteretic representation. For this purpose, the hystertic model under axial force variation is developed and implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program. The analytical predictions obtained with the new formulation are compared with test results and reveal accuracy and applicability in terms of strength and stiffness. In addition, comparison between results with and without axial force variation stresses the importance of the proposed approach.
In this paper the strain energy density (SED) model is used to analyze the seismic behavior of suspen-domes and a new criterion is established for judging the seismic failure based on a characteristic point in the SED model. Firstly, a nonlinear time-history response analysis was carried out using the finite-element package ANSYS for typical suspen-domes subjected to different ground motions. The seismic responses including nodal displacements, ratios of yielding members, strain energy density and structural maximum deformation energy were extracted corresponding to the increasing peak ground acceleration (A). Secondly, the SED sum ($I_d$) was calculated which revealed that the $I_d-A$ curve exhibited a relatively large change (called a characteristic point) at a certain value of A with a very small load increment after the structures entered the elastic-plastic state. Thirdly, a SED criterion is proposed to judge the seismic failure load based on the characteristic point. Subsequently, the case study verifies the characteristic point and the proposed SED criterion. Finally, this paper describes the unity and application of the SED criterion. The SED method may open a new way for structural appraisal and the SED criterion might give a unified criterion for predicting the failure loads of various structures subjected to dynamic loads.

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures require advanced analysis techniques for better estimation of their seismic responses, especially in the case of exhibiting complex three-dimensional coupling of torsional and flexural behaviors. This study focuses on validating a numerical approach for evaluating the seismic response of a three-dimensional unsymmetrical RC structure through the participation in the SMART 2013 international benchmark program. The benchmark program provides material properties, detailed drawings of the RC structure, and input ground motions for the seismic response evaluation. In this study, nonlinear constitutive models of concrete and rebar were formed and local tests were conducted to verify the constitutive models in finite element analysis. Elastic calibration of the finite element model of the SMART 2013 RC structure was performed by comparing numerical and experimental results in modal and linear time history analyses. Using the calibrated model, nonlinear earthquake analysis and seismic fragility analysis were performed to estimate the behavior and vulnerability of the RC structure with various ground motions.
Motivated by the demand of seismic protection of museum collections and development of performance-based seismic design guidelines, this paper investigates the seismic fragility of sliding artifacts based on incremental dynamic analysis and three-dimensional finite element model of the artifact-showcase-museum system considering nonlinear behavior of the structure and contact interfaces. Different intensity measures (IMs) for seismic fragility assessment of sliding artifacts are compared. The fragility curves of the sliding artifacts in both freestanding and restrained showcases placed on different floors of a four-story reinforced concrete frame structure are developed. The seismic sliding fragility of the artifacts within a real-world museum subjected to bi-directional horizontal ground motions is also assessed using the proposed IM and engineering demand parameter. Results show that the peak floor acceleration including only values initiating sliding is an efficient IM. Moreover, the sliding fragility estimate for the artifact in the restrained showcase increases as the floor level goes higher, while it may not be true in the freestanding showcase. Furthermore, the artifact is more prone to sliding failure in the restrained showcase than the freestanding showcase. In addition, the artifact has slightly worse sliding performance subjected to bi-directional motions than major-component motions.

This paper evaluates the seismic response of multi-span prestressed concrete girder bridges typically found in the New Madrid Seismic Zone region of the central United States. Using detailed nonlinear analytical models and synthetic ground motion records for Memphis, TN, nonlinear response history analyses are performed for two levels of ground motion: 10% probability of exceedance (PE) in 50 years, and 2% probability of exceedance (PE) in 50 years. The results show that the bridge performance is very good fur the 10% PE in 50 years ground motion level. However, the performance for the 2% PE in 50 years ground motion is not so good because it results in highly inelastic behavior of the bridge. Impact between decks results in large ductility demands on the columns, and failure of the bearings that support the girders. It is found that making the superstructure continuous, which is commonly performed for reducing dead load moments and maintenance requirements, results in significant improvement in the seismic response of prestressed concrete girder bridges.
In this paper, a numerical method is utilized to study the effect of a new vibration absorber on vibration response of the stiffened functionally graded (SFG) cylindrical shell under a couple of axial and transverse compressions. The material composition of the stiffeners and shell is continuously changed through the thickness. The vibration absorber consists of a mass-spring-damper system which is connected to the ground utilizing a linear local damper. To simplify, the spring element of the vibration absorber is called global potential. The von Kármán strain-displacement kinematic nonlinearity is employed in the constitutive laws of the shell and stiffeners. To consider the stiffeners in the model, the smeared stiffener technique is used. After obtaining the governing equations, the Galerkin method is applied to discretize the nonlinear dynamic equation of system. In order to find the nonlinear vibration responses, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is utilized. The influence of the stiffeners, the dynamic absorber parameters on the vibration behavior of the SFG cylindrical shell is investigated. Also, the influences of material parameters of the system on the vibration response are examined.

Fiber element method in earthquake response analysis of bridges is used to represents a realistic flexural deformation according to nonlinear behavior of beam-column section. Nonlinear pseudo-static analysis of two column bent using fiber element is accomplished and failure mechanism of the plastic hinge region is studied. Load-displacement curve obtained by nonlinear pseudo-static analysis can be applicable to earthquake response analysis by capacity spectrum method. The nonlinear time history analysis of a full bridge model using fiber element experienced by the ground motion corresponding to the target response spectrum is accomplished. The result of time history analysis is similar to that of capacity spectrum method.

This paper presents a systematic approach to the seismic nonlinear analysis and retrofit strategies for existing bridges with isolation system using retrofit slate function newly proposed in this study. A seismic retrofit scheme using sliding base isolation system was presented to reduce the seismic hazard for bridge structures. In this study, two types of isolation systems such as lead bearings and sliding isolators were used. The behavior of sliding isolators was modeled by a triaxial interaction model. And three types of earthquakes such as El Centro, San Fernando, and the artificial were used as earthquake ground excitations. Seismic response analyses of the bridge before and after retrofit were effectively carried out by using a three-dimensional nonlinear seismic analysis program, IDARC-Bridge. Also, this paper proposes a retrofit state function for easily representing the efficiency of a retrofit scheme.
This paper is an experimental and numerical work of Investigating the bearing capacity of shallow foundation of rubble mound under eccentric loads. Parametric centrifuge model tests at the 50g level environments with the model footings in the form of strip footing were performed by changing the loading location of model footing, relative density and materials for ground foundation. For the model ground, crushed rock sampled from a rocky mountain was prepared with a grain size distribution of having an identical coefficient of uniformity to the field condition. Model ground was also prepared with relative densities of 50 % and 80 %. For loading condition, model tests with and without eccentric load were carned out to investigate the effect of eccentric loads and a numerical analysis with the commertially available software of FLAC was performed. For numerical estimation with FLAC, the hyperbolic model of a nonlinear elastic constitutive relationship was used to simulate the stress-stram constitutive relationship of model ground and a series of triaxial compression test were carried out to find the parameters for this model Test results were analyzed and compared with Meyerhof method (1963), effective area method based on the limit equilibrium method, and a numerical analysis with FLAC.
