Damage assessment of structures according to the excavation methods (굴착방법에 따른 구조물의 손상도 평가)

  • When the ground is excavated near the pre-existing structures due to the region restricted condition such as urban area, the ground will be released by the excavation and the temporary wall will be deformed depending on the earth pressure. In this case, issues can be created in terms of stability of pre-existing structures. Firstly, the laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the ground surface settlement due to the ground excavation according to the excavation methods in this study. Using the ground surface settlement results from model tests, numerical analyses were carried out to study the structure deformation due to the ground excavation according to the excavation methods. Finally, using the structure deformation results from numerical analysis, the damage assessment of structures was carried out by using the strain damage estimation criterion.

Experimental study on the tunnel behavior induced by the excavation and the structure construction above existing tunnel (기존터널 상부지반 굴착 후 구조물 설치에 따른 터널거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, the construction of the urban area has been rapidly increasing, and the excavation work of the ground has been frequently performed at the upper part of the existing underground structures. Especially, when the structure is constructed after the excavation of the ground, the loading and unloading process in the ground under the excavation basement can affect the existing underground structures. Therefore, in order to maintain the stability of the existing underground structure due to the excavation of the ground, it is necessary to accurately grasp the influence of the excavation and the structure load in the adjoining part. In this study, the effect of the excavation of the ground and the new structure load on the existing tunnel was experimentally implemented and the influence of the adjacent construction on the existing tunnel was investigated. For this purpose a large testing model with 1/5 scale of the actual size was manufactured. The influence of ground excavation, width of the load due to new structure, and distance between centers of tunnel and of excavation on the existing tunnel was investigated. In this study, it was confirmed that the influence on the existing tunnel gets larger, as the excavation depth get deeper. At the same distance, it was confirmed that the tunnel displacement increased up to three times according to the increase of the building load width. That is, the load width influences the existing tunnel larger than the excavation depth. As the impact of the distance between centers of tunnel and of excavation, it was confirmed that tunnel crown displacement decreased by 48%. The result showed that a tunnel is located in the range of 1D (D: tunnel diameter) from the center of excavation, the effect of excavation is the largest.

Two dimensional finite element modeling of Tabriz metro underground station L2-S17 in the marly layers

  • Deep excavations for development of subway systems in metropolitan regions surrounded by adjacent buildings is an important geotechnical problem, especialy in Tabriz city, where is mostly composed of young alluvial soils and weak marly layers. This study analyzes the wall displacement and ground surface settlement due to deep excavation in the Tabriz marls using two dimensional finite element method. The excavation of the station L2-S17 was selected as a case study for the modelling. The excavation is supported by the concrete diaphragm wall and one row of steel struts. The analyses investigate the effects of wall stiffness and excavation width on the excavation-induced deformations. The geotechnical parameters were selected based on the results of field and laboratory tests. The results indicate that the wall deflection and ground surface settlement increase with increasing excavation depth and width. The change in maximum wall deflection and ground settlement with considerable increase in wall stiffness is marginal, however the lower wall stiffness produces the larger wall and ground displacements. The maximum wall deflections induced by the excavation with a width of 8.2 m are 102.3, 69.4 and 44.3 mm, respectively for flexible, medium and stiff walls. The ratio of maximum ground settlement to maximum lateral wall deflection approaches to 1 with increasing wall stiffness. It was found that the wall stiffness affects the settlement influence zone. An increase in the wall stiffness results in a decrease in the settlements, an extension in the settlement influence zones and occurrence of the maximum settlements at a larger distance from the wall. The maximum of settlement for the excavation with a width of 14.7 m occurred at 6.1, 9.1 and 24.2 m away from the wall, respectively, for flexible, medium and stiff walls.

Development of web-based system for ground excavation impact prediction and risk assessment (웹기반 굴착 영향도 예측 및 위험도 평가 시스템 개발)

  • Due to the increase in ground excavation work, the possibility of ground subsidence accidents is increasing. And it is very difficult to prevent these risk fundamentally through institutional reinforcement such as the special law for underground safety management. As for the various cases of urban ground excavation practice, the ground subsidence behavior characteristics which is predicted using various information before excavation showed a considerable difference that could not be ignored compared to the results real construction data. Changes in site conditions such as seasonal differences in design and construction period, changes in construction methods depending on the site conditions and long-term construction suspension due to various reasons could be considered as the main causes. As the countermeasures, the safety management system through various construction information is introduced, but there is still no suitable system which can predict the effect of excavation and risk assessment. In this study, a web-based system was developed in order to predict the degree of impact on the ground subsidence and surrounding structures in advance before ground excavation and evaluate the risk in the design and construction of urban ground excavation projects. A system was built using time series analysis technique that can predict the current and future behavior characteristics such as ground water level and settlement based on past field construction records with field monitoring data. It was presented as a geotechnical data visualization (GDV) technology for risk reduction and disaster management based on web-based system, Using this newly developed web-based assessment system, it is possible to predict ground excavation impact prediction and risk assessment.

Prediction and Field Measurement on Behaviour of Soft Clay during Deep Excavation (연약점성토지반에서의 깊은굴착에 따른 지반거동의 예측과 현장계측)

  • When deep excavation adjacent to an existing structure is performed, it is very important to minimize damage on the structure through the prediction of ground movement. In this paper, finite element analysis was performed to predict the ground movement, based on the data from site investigation and laboratory tests, when deep excavation close to a buried water tank was carried out in soft clay ground. The movement and stabilities of the soil-cement wall(SCW) and the adjacent structure were checked using the results of the analysis and the field measurement. The comparison between the measured and the predicted ground movements showed the significance of the excavation procedure and lowering of water level in the analytical model. In the future, it is needed to improve the prediction method for better estimation of the ground movement.

A simple model for ground surface settlement induced by braced excavation subjected to a significant groundwater drawdown

  • Braced excavation systems are commonly required to ensure stability in construction of basements for shopping malls, underground transportation and other habitation facilities. For excavations in deposits of soft clays or residual soils, stiff retaining wall systems such as diaphragm walls are commonly adopted to restrain the ground movements and wall deflections in order to prevent damage to surrounding buildings and utilities. The ground surface settlement behind the excavation is closely associated with the magnitude of basal heave and the wall deflections and is also greatly influenced by the possible groundwater drawdown caused by potential wall leakage, flow from beneath the wall, flow from perched water and along the wall interface or poor panel connections due to the less satisfactory quality. This paper numerically investigates the influences of excavation geometries, the system stiffness, the soil properties and the groundwater drawdown on ground surface settlement and develops a simplified maximum surface settlement Logarithm Regression model for the maximum ground surface settlement estimation. The settlements estimated by this model compare favorably with a number of published and instrumented records.

  • Tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements have been investigated by numerical parametric studies considering ground condition, excavation characteristics, and ground layers. Before the numerical study the existing methods of ground movement estimation have been collected and analysed to have some information of ground movements and to improve them providing a fundamental material for the numerical study. Numerical model simulation has been performed of a physical model test of tunnel excavation in which the ground movements were measured reliably and the results have been used to determine the numerical approach and the appropriate soil constitutive mode. With this procedure done, the results of numerical parametric studies have been put together to analyze and understand tunnelling-induced settlements and lateral ground movements.

Monitoring & Analysis on Excavation Failure Modes by Centrifugal Model Experiment (원심모형실험에 의한 지하굴착 붕괴양상에 관한 계측 및 해석)

  • This paper is to investigate the failure surface and modes in a soil mass by a excavation of the model ground. To study the failure surface for the excavated slope, centrifugal model tests were performed by changing the angle of the excavated slope(50, 75, $90^{\circ}$) and the ground condition($D_r$=60, 90%, dry and submerged ground). Excavation was simulated during the centrifuge tests by operating a valve that allowed the zinc chloride solvent to drain from the excavation. Results of model tests were compared with those obtained with theoretical solutions using limit equilibrium analysis method. The results of model tests show that, there is a failure to create a straight line in the low angle of excavated surface and a create a circle as the angle increases. Also, as the angle of excavated surface is increasing, the angle of the failure surface increases. The failure length in the submerged ground increases approximately 1.10~1.34 times more than that of the dry ground.

Response Analysis of Nearby Structures to Excavation-Induced Advancing Ground Movements (지반굴착 유발 진행성 지반변위에 의한 인접구조물의 거동분석)

  • This paper investigates the effects of excavation-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions of different soil and structural characteristics. The response of four and two-story block structures, which are subjected to excavation-induced advancing ground movements, are investigated in different soil conditions using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis are modelled to have cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four and two-story block structures are investigated with advancing ground movement phases and compared with the response of structures which are subjected to excavation-induced total ground movement. The response of structures is compared among others in terms of the magnitude and shape of deformations and cracks in structures for different structure and ground conditions. The results of the comparison provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to excavation-induced ground movements.

Especially, when the structure is constructed after the excavation of the ground, the loading and unloading process is repeated in the lower ground of the excavation so that it can affect existing underground structures. Therefore, in order to maintain the stability of the existing underground structure due to the excavation of the ground, it is necessary to accurately grasp the influence of the excavation and the structure load in the adjoining part. In this study, the effects of the ground excavation and the new structure load on the existing tunnel were investigated by large - scale experiment and numerical analysis. For this purpose, a large model tester with a size reduced to 1/5 of the actual size was constructed, and model tests and numerical analyzes were carried out to investigate the effects of the excavation of the body ground by maintaining the distance between the excavation floor and the tunnel ceiling constant, The impacts were identified. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the deeper the excavation depth, the larger the influence on the existing tunnel. At the same distance, it was confirmed that the tunnel displacement increased with the increase of the building load, and the ground stress increased up to 2.4 times. From this result, it was confirmed that the effect of the increase of the underground stress on the existing tunnel is affected by the increase of the building load, and the influence of the underground stress is decreased from the new load width above 3.0D.
