  • Recently, a variety of modeling studies have been conducted to examine the air quality over South Korea during the Korea - United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign period (May 1 to June 10, 2016). This study investigates the impact of different meteorological initializations on atmospheric modeling results. We conduct several simulations during the KORUS-AQ period using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with two different initial datasets, which is FNL of NCEP and ERA5 of ECMWF. Comparing the raw initial data, ERA5 showed better accuracy in the temperature, wind speed, and mixing ratio fields than those of NCEP-FNL. On the other hand, the results of WRF simulations with ERA5 showed better accuracy in the simulated temperature and mixing ratio than those with FNL, except for wind speed. Comparing the nudging efficiency of temperature and wind speed fields, the grid nudging effect on the FNL simulation was larger than that on the ERA5 simulation, but the results of mixing ratio field was the opposite. Overall, WRF simulation with ERA5 data showed a better performance for temperature and mixing ratio simulations than that with FNL data. For wind speed simulation, however, WRF simulation with FNL data indicated more accurate results compared to that with ERA5 data.

  • In this paper, a global path generation method is suggested using multiple grid maps connected with the mission type of unmanned combat vehicle(UCV). In order to carry out a mission for UCV, it is essential to find a global path which is coincident with the characteristics of the mission. This can be done by considering various combat circumstances represented as grid maps such as velocity map, threat map and communication map. Cost functions of multiple grid maps are linearly combined and normalized to them simultaneously for the path generation. The proposed method is realized using $A^*$, a well known search algorithm, and cost functions are normalized in the ratio of the traverse time which is one of critical information should be provided with the operators using the velocity map. By the experiments, it is checked found global paths match with the mission type by reflecting input data of grid maps properly and the computation time is short enough to regenerate paths in real time as combat circumstances change.

  • The supersonic flow around multi-stage rocket system is analyzed using 3-D compressible unsteady flow solver. A Chimera overset grid technique is used for the calculation of present configuration and grid around the core rocket is composed of 3 zones to represent fins in the core rocket. Flow solver is parallelized to reduce the computation time, and an efficient parallelization algorithm for Chimera grid technique is proposed. AUSMPW+ scheme is used for the spatial discretization and LU-SGS for the time integration. The flow field around multi-stage rocket was analyzed using this developed solver, and the results were compared with that of a sequential solver The speed-up ratio and the efficiency were measured in several processors. As a result, the computing speed with 12 processors was about 10 times faster than that of a sequential solver. Developed flow solver is used to predict the trajectory of booster in separation stage. From the analyses, booster collides against core rocket in free separation case. So, additional jettisoning forces and moments needed for a safe separation are examined.

  • Interaction among multiple grid-connected inverters has a negative impact on the stable operations and power quality of a power grid. The interrelated influences of inverter inductor-capacitor-inductor filters constitute a high-order power network, and consequently, excite complex resonances at various frequencies. This study first establishes a micro-grid admittance matrix, in which inverters use deadbeat control. Multiple resonances can then be evaluated via modal analysis. For the active damping method applied to deadbeat control, the sampling frequency and the stable domain of the virtual damping ratio are also presented by analyzing system stability in the discrete domain. Simulation and experimental results confirm the efficiency of modal analysis and stable domain calculation in multi-inverter grid-connected systems.

  • The present work analyzes the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of the plate heat exchanger with staggered dimples. The flow is assumed to be constant property, three dimensional and laminar. A thermal boundary condition is uniform wall temperature and it is assumed that the flow is periodically fully developed. Elliptic grid generation is used for proper modelling of the internal tube geometry with dimples. Computations have been carried out for a variety of geometric parameters, Reynolds number, and Prandtl number. The friction factor ratio and the ratio of a module average Nusselt number are presented for the cases considered in this study. It is found that the distance between dimples has a substantial effect on the pressure drop and heat transfer.

  • To evaluate the effect of spring shape on the fretting wear of nuclear fuel rod, sliding wear tests were performed using three kinds of space grid springs in room temperature air and water. With increasing slip amplitude, wear volume of each spring gradually increased. It is apparently shown that spring with convex shape had a relatively high wear resistance compared with concave shape springs. It is suggested that the ratio of the wear volume to the worn area can be suggested as an efficient and valid parameter to evaluate the wear resistibility of a fuel grid spring.

  • At 3-D vision measuring, the camera calibration is necessary to calculate parameters accurately. Camera calibration was developed widely in two categories. One is that establishes reference points in space, and the other is that uses the grid type frame and statistical method. But, the former has difficult to setup reference points and the latter has low accuracy. In this paper we present an algorithm for camera calibration using perspective ratio of the grid type frame with different line widths. The advantage of this algorithm is that it can estimate position, pose and distance between camera and object ...

  • Effect of some process variables including area reduction, stroke advance, materials on the extrusion load, plastic flow and height ratio of upper to lower extruded parts in the cup-cup axisymmetric extrusion were experimentally investigated and analyzed. Deformed pattern is visualized by grid-marking technique using half-cut billets splitted. The influence of using split specimen and original specimen on the extrusion load and height ratio is examined by experiment.

  • The performance of convective heat transfer in rod bundle flow was experimentally evaluated using a twist-vane spacer grid. A $4{\times}4$ square-arrayed rod bundle was prepared as the test section, with a pitch-to-diameter ratio(P/D) of ~1.35. To check the convective heat transfer performance, the circumferential and longitudinal variations in rod-wall temperatures were measured downstream of the twist-vane spacer grid. In the circumferential measurements, the rod-wall temperature toward the twist-vane tip showed the lowest value, which might be due to the deflected water flow caused by the twist-vane. On the other hand, the wall temperature of the longitudinal measurements near the twist-vane spacer grid decreased dramatically, which implies that the convective heat transfer performance was enhanced. A heat transfer enhancement of ~35 % was achieved near downstream of the twist-vane spacer grid, as compared with the upstream value. Based on the present experimental data, a correlation for predicting the heat transfer performance of a twist-vane spacer grid was proposed.

  • We present highly transparent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using hybrid films based on carbon nanomaterials, metal grid, and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grid. Carbon based nanomaterials are used as transparent electrodes because of high transmittance. Despite of their high transmittance they have relatively high sheet resistance. To solve this problem, we applied grid and made hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials. Conventional photolithography processes were used to make a grid pattern of metal and ITO. To fabricate transparent conductive films, carbon nanotube (CNT) ink was spin coated on the grid pattern. The transparency of the conductive film was controlled by shape and size of the grid pattern and the thickness of CNT films. The optical transmittance of CNT-based hybrid films is 92.2% and sheet resistance is also reduced to $168{\Omega}/square$. These substrates were used for the fabrication of typical twisted nematic (TN) LCD cells. From the characteristics of LCD devices such as transmittance, operating voltage, voltage holding ratio our devices were comparable to those of pristine ITO substrates. The result shows that the hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials could be alternative of ITO for the highly transparent LCDs.
