  • This research presents an evaluation of the weathering and deterioration state of the Wanggung-ri five-storied stone pagoda in the Iksan (National Treasure No. 289) and suggests conservational schemes. A deterioration map of the pagoda was drawn from the aspects of petrological, physical, chemical, biological, structural and artificial weathering. The rock properties consisting of the pagoda were medium-grained biotite granite that had leucocratic phenocryst developed in parts. The body of each story suffered severely from the secondary contamination that turned the colors into light grey, pitch dark, yellowish brown, and reddish brown as well as granular decomposition, exfoliation and peel-off. The roof stones were heavy exfoliated or peeled off in most of the cases. In addition to the fine cracks, there were layered cracks on the corners. The roof stones of the3rd and 4th story in the north and west side had some stones fall-off, while those of the 2ndstory in the north side had steel reinforcement filled for a fixing purpose. Those of the 5th story showed big gaps that must have originated from cracks and were easily subject to granular decomposition and rainfall. The inside clay filler was missing in the lower part of the roof stones of the 4th and 5th story and the supporting stones, which were thus covered by light grey or pitch dark sediments. The contact area of the materials was about 70 % in the parts where there was a space due to the filler missing and washigher than 90 % in the lower parts of the pagoda. About 90 % or more of the roof stones surface of each story were covered by aerial plants that formed a thick biological mat. Thus it seemed necessary to come up with the conservational measures to remove the plans living on the surface of the stone materials, with the plans to prevent rain from falling inside, and with the water repellent and hardening treatments to postpone the surface weathering of the rock properties. All those measures and plans must be based on the results of long-term monitoring and thorough detail investigations.

  • In order to compare the growth and survival rates of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) juveniles in different salinities, the fish reared in seawater (SW) abruptly were transferred to each experimental rearing water of $0\%SW\;(0\%_{\circ}),\;25\%SW\;(7.7\%_{\circ}),\;50\%SW\;(16.1\%_{\circ})$ and $100\%SW (32.8\%_{\circ})$. Growth rates in total length and body weight of fish in $25\%$ SW, $50\%$ SW and $75\%$ SW were greater than that in $0\%$ SW (P<0,05). Decreased salinity appeared to have an acute, but appetite depressive effect in short term in the experimental groups. Survival rate was low in $0\%$ SW (P<0.05), although those were more than $81\%$ in all salinities. There were no differences in thickness of epidermis and dermis layers in fish skin among the all experimental groups at the end of experiment. But the thickness of lipid layer in $0\%$ SW fish showed the significant differences to those in $50\%$ SW and $100\%$ SW (P<0.05). With decreased salinities, oxygen consumption was found to be decresed in the other experimental groups compared to the group in $100\%$ SW. The levels of lethal dissolved oxygen in $0\%$ SW to $100\%$ SW were 1.18, 0.30, 0,28 and 0.31 ppm, respectively.

  • Building stones can be divided into two groups: raw stone and stone product. In Korea, they consist of granite, diorite, gabbro, andesite, tuff, slate and marble, of which granite is main product. The disribution area is approximately $31,753km^2$. The enterprises of building stone are about 1,500 at present. The granites for building stone are biotite granite, hornblende granite. granodiorite and porphyritic granite, of different colors (white, pink, grey, green and black). The compressive strength of granite ranges from 813 to $1,338kg/cm^2$, hardness from 78 to 101 and water absorption ratio from 0.09 to 0.40%. The weight reduction ratio of granite for 14 hours in aqua regia+$KMnO_4$solution is 0.3~4.5wt.%. There are eighty granite quarries in Korea. Marbles can also be extensively used for building but only a few mines are operated at present.

  • A 10.4-m high highway embankment retained behind mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls is under construction in the northeastern part of the Indian state of Bihar. The structure is constructed with compacted, micaceous, grey, silty sand, reinforced with polyester (PET) geogrids, and faced with reinforced cement concrete fascia panels. The connections between the fascia panels and the geogrids failed on several occasions during the monsoon seasons of 2007 and 2008 following episodes of heavy rainfall, when the embankment was still under construction. However, during these incidents the MSE embankment itself remained by and large stable and the collateral damages were minimal. The observational data during these incidents presented an opportunity to develop and calibrate a simple procedure for estimating rainfall induced pore water pressure development within MSE embankments constructed with backfill materials that do not allow unimpeded seepage. A simple analytical finite element model was developed for the purpose. The modeling results were found to agree with the observational and meteorological records from the site. These results also indicated that the threshold rainwater infiltration flux needed for the development of pore water pressure within an MSE embankment is a monotonically increasing function of the hydraulic conductivity of backfill. Specifically for the MSE embankment upon which this study is based, the analytical results indicated that the instabilities could have been avoided by having in place a chimney drain immediately behind the fascia panels.

  • Material defects in the Steam Generator Tubes (SGT) of sodium cooled fast breeder reactor (PFBR) can lead to leakage of water into sodium. The water and sodium reaction will lead to major accidents. Therefore, the examination of steam generator tubes for the early detection of defects is an important requirement for safety and economic considerations. In this work, the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique is used to perform the defect detection process. The rectangular notch defects on the outer surface of steam generator tubes are modeled using COMSOL multiphysics 4.3a software. The obtained MFL images are de-noised to improve the integrity of flaw related information. Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features are extracted from MFL images and taken as input parameter to train the neural network. A comparative study on characterization have been carried out using feed-forward back propagation (FFBP) and cascade-forward back propagation (CFBP) algorithms. The results of both algorithms are evaluated with Mean Square Error (MSE) as a prediction performance measure. The average percentage error for length, depth and width are also computed. The result shows that the feed-forward back propagation network model performs better in characterizing the defects.

  • Water Footprint is utilized to analyze direct and indirect water consumption for sustainable water resource management. This study aims to understand potential applicability of water footprint concept by analyzing the status of water consumption and related water policies in Seoul. We analyzed a direct gray water footprint and the blue water footprint in Seoul affected by the social and economic characteristics of the consumers in the city. In particular, in order to analyze the blue water footprint represented by both surface and underground water for the provision and consumption of products, we calculated the actual water consumptions of surface and underground water for 25 districts in Seoul. Our analysis in consideration of population and households indicates that Jung-gu has the highest blue water footprint followed by Jongro-gu, Gangnam-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Seocho-gu. Gray water footprint was calculated by estimating the amount of water for purifying wastewater to meet the water quality standard (above BOD 3.5ppm) for each district. As a result, Jung-gu has the highest gray water footprint, followed by Jongro-gu, Gangnam-gu, Yongsan-gu, Seocho-gu, and Youngdeungpo-gu. Our study suggests the potential value of using water footprint concept to complement the current limitations of water use management focusing on water supply control. We expect that our analysis will provide an important basis for considering water use management which is economically and socially more resilient and sustainable.

  • The aim of this study was to attempt the efficacy of antifungal activity of the wood extracts against Botrytis grey mold. Wood chip derived from Quercus mongolica was obtain from steam explosion process and extracted by hot water and methanol and ethanol. The conidial germination was maximum growth with the application temperature for 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. In pH test, we observed the maximum growth in pH 5.0 and 7.0. Antifungal activity was the best in the hot water extractives against Botrytis cinerea. The separation of the antifungal substances was performed using a silica-gel column (n-hexane : chloroform : ethyl acetate : formic acid = 12 : 17 : 8 : 0.2, v/v/v/v), TLC and UV-Spectrophotometer, and isolated 6 fraction group. The result of antifungal activity in 6 fraction group, fraction group I and fraction group II were the highest antifungal activity against grey mold with the present study. Three peaks in fraction group I and II were detected by HPLC and this compounds were suppose to effective of antifungal activity.

  • Climate change causes changes in rainfall patterns, temperature and drought frequency. Climate change impact influences on water management and crop production. It is critical issue in agricultural industry. Rice is a staple cereal crop in South Korea and Korea uses a ponding system for its paddy fields which requires a significant amount of water. In addition, water supply has inter-relationship with crop production which indicates water productivity. Therefore, it is important to assess overall impacts of climate change on water resource and crop production. A water footprint concept is an indicator which shows relationship between water use and crop yield. In addition, it generally composed of three components depending on water resources: green, blue, grey water. This study analyzed the change trend of water footprint of paddy rice under the climate change. The downscaled climate data from HadGEM3-RA based on RCP 8.5 scenario was applied as future periods (2020s, 2050s, 2080s), and historical climate data was set to base line (1990s). Depending on agro-climatic zones, Suwon and Jeonju were selected for study area. A yield of paddy rice was simulated by using FAO-AquaCrop 5.0, which is a water-driven crop model. Model was calibrated by adjusting parameters and was validated by Mann-Whitney U test statistically. The means of water footprint were projected increase by 55 % (2020s), 51 % (2050s) and 48 % (2080s), respectively, from the baseline value of $767m^2/ton$ in Suwon. In case of Jeonju, total water footprint was projected to increase by 46 % (2020s), 45 % (2050s), 12 % (2080s), respectively, from the baseline value of $765m^2/ton$. The results are expected to be useful for paddy water management and operation of water supply system and apply in establishing long-term policies for agricultural water resources.
