한국연안의 푸른바다거북(Chelonia mydas) 인공위성표지방류 (Satellite Tracking of Green Sea Turtles Chelonia mydas in Korean Waters)

  • To investigate the distribution and migrations of sea turtles occurring in Korean waters, an adult female green sea turtle Chelonia mydas was tagged with a satellite transmitter and released at Busan in October 2009. The confirmation was made for the first time that the released green sea turtle migrated back to Korea after visiting Jeju Island and Japan for approximately 9 months. The green sea turtle spent the winter in Jeju and Japan because of low water temperatures in the East Sea and South Sea during winter months, which were not suitable for turtle survival. Compared with an immature green sea turtle that was released at Jeju Island, the adult green showed a markedly different migration pattern, suggesting that juvenile and adult greens move differently because of their peculiar life cycle and their stage of maturity, in addition to responses to temperature changes. Additional satellite tracking with increased representation of species, sexes and sizes of turtles, and regions is required to gather information on the distribution and movements of sea turtles in Korean waters.

한국 연안의 멸종위기 바다거북의 분포 및 좌초 현황 (Distribution and Strandings of Endangered Sea Turtles in Korean Waters)

  • This paper reports the strandings of sea turtles on Korean shores monitored for the first time in 2008. A total of 19 sea turtles, consisting of 12 greens and 7 loggerheads, were recorded as stranded from the east coast to the south including Jeju Island. Reported strandings reached a peak in July and dominant area was Jeju Island. The curved carapace length of loggerhead sea turtles ranged 65-84.2cm and that of green sea turtles ranged 39.2-90cm, indicating most of them were immature to sub-adult. Out of 19 turtles, 11 were found dead with unknown reasons. Possible causes of death may include drawning by fishing gear, swallowing of marine debris, boat collision, and diseases. An immature green sea turtle tagged with a satellite transmitter spent winter near Jeju Island where it was released, suggesting that the Island provide immature greens a feeding ground. Considering thousands of sea turtles crawl on Japanese shores for nesting every year, the number of sea turtles reported in Korean waters was relatively small. Therefore, it is suggested that an appropriate monitoring system be necessary to protect and conserve endangered sea turtle species in Korean waters.

국내최초 푸른바다거북(Chelonia mydas)의 실내 인공 번식 및 어린 개체의 초기 성장 특성 (Analysis of the Rate of Post-Hatching Growth of the First Artificially Bred Green Turtle Chelonia mydas Juveniles in Korea)

  • The green turtle Chelonia mydas has been designated as an endangered species globally due to its reduced population. Although C. mydas is not known to reproduce on the shores of the Korean peninsula, it has been listed as a protected marine species in South Korea. This study describes the first successful captive breeding of C. mydas in a commercial aquarium in South Korea and provides information on the early growth patterns of C. mydas hatched and reared in indoor facilities. C. mydas YS-B003 laid a total of 594 eggs in ten nesting events in the period December 2016-June 2017. Of these, 115 fertilized eggs from six events hatched successfully. The size of the newly hatched turtles differed significantly among nesting events. The hatchlings from the 8th and 9th nesting events were relatively smaller than those from the 3rd and 5th events. The rate of growth initially varied across the different events, but from the 1,000th day, the inter-group variation disappeared. The present study provides useful information for future captive breeding of sea turtles in indoor facilities, which would contribute to the protection of these endangered sea turtle species.

우리나라 제주도에서 관찰된 바다거북의 좌초와 혼획 (Observation and Record of Sea Turtles in Bycatch and Stranding from Jeju Island of Korea)

  • 2008년부터 2009년까지 제주도 연안 해역에서 혼획 및 좌초 되는 바다거북의 모니터링을 실시하였다. 그 결과 푸른바다거북(C. mydas) 12마리, 붉은바다거북(C. caretta) 3마리, 매부리바다거북(E. imbricata) 1마리, 미확인 종 25마리 등 총 41마리의 바다거북이 2년 동안 제주도 연안 해역에서 관찰되었다. 월별 및 해역별로는 8월에 제주도 북서부 연안의 애월읍 해역에서 혼획 및 좌초 빈도가 높았고 2008년 보다 2009년도에 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 특히 제주도 북부 해안에 위치한 애월읍 연안 해역에서 연속적으로 출현 개체 수가 증가하는 것으로 보아 이 지역은 바다거북의 색이장 및 생육장이 되고 있을 것으로 추측된다. 어구별로는 정치망과 자망에서 주로 혼획 되었으며, 수동적 어구 형태인 정치망의 혼획이 높은 것으로 보아 먹이를 쫓아가다가 혼획되는 것으로 판단된다. 이번 연구를 통하여 앞으로도 제주도 연안 해역에 출현하는 바다거북의 개체수는 점차 증가할 것으로 예측되어 체계적인 모니터링 시스템 구축이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Occurrence and diet analysis of sea turtles in Korean shore

  • Background: Sea turtles, which are globally endangered species, have been stranded and found as bycatch on the Korean shore recently. More studies on sea turtles in Korea are necessary to aid their conservation. To investigate the spatio-temporal occurrence patterns of sea turtles on the Korean shore, we recorded sampling locations and dates, identified species and sexes and measured sizes (maximum curved carapace length; CCL) of collected sea turtles from the year 2014 to 2020. For an analysis of diets through stomach contents, we identified the morphology of the remaining food and extracted DNA, followed by amplification, cloning, and sequencing. Results: A total of 62 stranded or bycaught sea turtle samples were collected from the Korean shores during the study period. There were 36 loggerhead turtles, which were the dominant species, followed by 19 green turtles, three hawksbill turtles, two olive ridley turtles, and two leatherback turtles. The highest numbers were collected in the year 2017 and during summer among the seasons. In terms of locations, most sea turtles were collected from the East Sea, especially from Pohang. Comparing the sizes of collected sea turtles according to species, the average CCL of loggerhead turtles was 79.8 cm, of green turtles was 73.5 cm, and of the relatively large leatherback turtle species was 126.2 cm. In most species, the proportion of females was higher than that of males and juveniles, and was more than 70% across all the species. Food remains were morphologically identified from 19 stomachs, mainly at class level. Seaweeds were abundant in stomachs of green turtles, and Bivalvia was the most detected food item in loggerhead turtles. Based on DNA analysis, food items from a total of 26 stomachs were identified to the species or genus level. The gulfweed, Sargassum thunbergii, and the kelp species, Saccharina japonica, were frequently detected from the stomachs of green turtles and the jellyfish, Cyanea nozakii, the swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, and kelps had high frequencies of occurrences in loggerhead turtles. Conclusions: Our findings support those of previous studies suggesting that sea turtles are steadily appearing in the Korean sea. In addition, we verified that fish and seaweed, which inhabit the Korean sea, are frequently detected in the stomach of sea turtles. Accordingly, there is a possibility that sea turtles use the Korean sea as feeding grounds and habitats. These results can serve as basic data for the conservation of globally endangered sea turtles.

한국의 제주에서 발견된 바다거북 잡종(Caretta caretta ${\times}$ Chelonia mydas)에 대한 첫 보고 (First Report of a Hybridization between Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas from Jeju Island, South Korea)

  • 이 논문은 국내에서 발견된 잡종 바다거북 (Caretta caretta ${\times}$ Chelonia mydas)에 대한 첫 번째 보고이다. 2012년 5월 7일 바다거북류 한 개체(JST01)가 제주도 동쪽해안에서 사체로 발견되었다. 국내에서 빈번하게 관찰되는 바다거북류 두 종(C. caretta and C. mydas)과 JST01의 외부형태를 비교한 결과, 채색, 등갑의 형태, 부리(upper beak)의 모양, 연갑판에 거치 그리고 앞발 발톱 개수 등의 외부형태는 C. caretta와 일치하였다. 반면, 연갑판, 서계갑판 그리고 늑갑판의 수, 용골이 없는 매끈한 등갑, 늑갑판과 정갑판이 접촉하지 않는 점 등은 C. mydas의 특징과 일치하였다. 결론적으로 C. caretta와 C. mydas의 외부형질들을 복합적으로 가지고 있는 JST01은 서로 다른 두 종간에 생겨난 교잡종이라 판단된다. 이상의 결과는 바다거북류에서 나타나는 잡종형성에 대한 연구에 중요한 기초자료가 될 것이다.

  • The purpose of this study was to search the calcium and iron rich foods in Korean people. The food sources presented in the current home economics textbooks of middle and high school were investigated. And 40 kinds of calcium and iron rich foods were selected by the quantity in 100g edible portion. one serving size and according to 1997 food supply data. Also 3 major food groups of calcium and iron supply in Korean were identified, and 10 rich foods for each food groups were selected. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The food sources of calcium 1) The food sources of calcium presented in the home economics textbooks of middle and high school are milk and dairy products. small fishes such as anchovy icefish and dried strip and green vegetables etc. 2) The calcium rich foods by 100g edible portion were in order of skim milk powder river snail sesame sea mustard. whole milk powder. snapping turtle loach sea tangle(dried) opossum shrimp and sea lettuce(dried). And the calcium rich foods by the calcium content in one serving were in order of river snail snapping turtle opossum shrimp loach spiny lobster skate skim milk powder small alaska pollack freshwater crab condensed milk whole milk powder skate ray and milk. 3) The 3 major calcium supply food groups in Korean were vegetables fish and shellfishes and milk and dairy products. 4) The calcium supply foods according to the quantity of food supply in 1997 was in order of sea mustard, milk anchovy chinese cabbage soybean skin milk powder laver shrimp welsh onion and maize. The vegetables were the important sources of calcium in Korean. 2. The food sources of iron 1) The food sources of iron which are commonly presented in the textbooks of middle and high school were meat liver egg(egg yolk) and green vegetables etc 2) The iron rich foods on the basis of the iron content in 100g edible portion were in order of surf clam marsh clam laver(dried)( sea lettuce(dried), crayfish pelilla seed little neck clam orient hard clam, venus clam, and freshwater carab. And the iron rich foods by the iron content in one serving were in order of surf clam marsh clam crayfish little neck clam orient hard clam freshwater crab venus clam hen cockle green confertii(fresh) pen shell and spiny lobster. 3) The 3 major iron supply food groups in Korean were cereals an cereal products fishes and shellfishes and vegetables. 4) The iron supply food according to the quantity of food supply in 1997 was in order of soybean sea mustard maize rice meat edible viscera laver wheat flour, pook, red pepper, egg and bovine meat.

  • The Great Wall is an element in University which stand outs as a landmark. The Great Wall is located in front of the grand staircases of the gymnasium in the main gate area. Falling water and Lights shows a spectacle panorama in various point of view. Water falls down the top of the grand staircases and the front walls. And the red, blue and green lights brighten the falling water in the evenings. Also the relief of the palm tree and turtle symbolizes the University Identity. The wall is comprehends not only the day and the night but four seasons. The Water, Lights, and the Relief are coordinates well along with the new building in campus.

부·모의 양육행동에 따른 유아의 의도적 통제: 유아 성별과 양육행동의 상호작용을 중심으로 (Preschoolers' Effortful Control according to Paternal and Maternal Parenting Behaviors: Focusing on the Interaction Effect between Gender and Parenting Behaviors)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine 1) the relations among parent-reported, teacher-reported, and task-observed effortful control, and 2) the differences of preschoolers' effortful control based on preschoolers' gender and parenting behaviors (affectionate, controlled). In this study, the subjects were 221 preschoolers (104 boys, 117 girls) and their parents. The preschoolers' effortful controls was measured by Effortful Control Battery (Snack Delay, Turtle and Rabbit, and Red-Green Sign) and the Children's Behavior Questionnaire-Short Form. Parenting behavior was measured by the Parenting Style scale. The major results of this study were as follows. First, there were positive correlations between parent-reported effortful control and both teacher-reported and task-observed effortful control. Second, there were significant differences in preschoolers' effortful control by gender and level of affectionate parenting behavior. And there was an interaction effect between gender and level of affectionate parenting behavior on preschoolers' effortful control. The implications of this study were as follows. It is needed to evaluate effortful control in various circumstances and by multiple raters, and affectionate parenting behavior had an important role upon boys' effortful control rather than that of girls.
