Performance Evaluation of a Lubrication Seal for Freight Cars (화물열차 차축용 저 마찰 오일실의 성능 평가)

  • Rail car axles are very important parts for safety of passengers and structural integrity of vehicles. The axles are supported by bearings. To seal grease lubricating the bearings of freight cars, an oil seal has been developed. The developed oil seal is composed of an inner plate, an outer plate and a seal rubber. The friction between axle and housing with the developed oil seal is very low. The seals are designed for a minimum life expectancy of 800,000 kilometers service. In this study, an accelerated durability tests according to AAR Specification M-934-82 were carried out. In addition, various performance tests according to KS B 2804 were conducted.

Effects of MWCNT Nucleating Agent on the Formation Reaction of Rigid Polyurethane Foams

  • A study of the effects of MWCNT as a nucleating agent on the formation reactions of the rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) was carried out. Sample PUFs, formulated with grease-type master batch of MWCNT/surfactant, were fabricated by free-rising method. Temperature changes with time during foaming process were measured using a digital thermometer. RPUF foaming process was observed to undergo 2-step processes with temperature inflection around 60 sec after the start of reaction, and then reached slowly the max. temperature. While the max. temperature of neat PUF was measured as ca. $120^{\circ}C$, that of the samples with MWCNT were as higher value as ca. $130^{\circ}C$, and, even the time to reach that temperature was reduced by about 15 sec. Average cell size of PUF samples decreased from 185.1 for the neat PUF to $162.9{\mu}m$ for the sample of 0.01 phr of MWCNT. As the result, it was considered that MWCNT in RPUF foaming process could play a roll both as a nucleating agent and as a catalyst.

  • The sliding wear characteristics of the crane sheave were investigated using a pin on disk rig tester. The experiment was conducted using a high carbon steel wire that was upper material, also carbon steel castings that was disk material. There are various operating conditions in this work. At the room temperature, we carried out the wear test under a grease lubrication and dry condition. The results of wear test showed that an annealed-casted have lower, also the wear curves are linearly increased with increasing of sliding distance. For the specific wear rate of annealed-casted, the wear resistance was increased with decreasing diameter of wire. The wear of a wire and a disk have a different mechanism, the one is the abrasive wear due to fatigue wear under lubrication, another is the adhesion wear under dry condition.

  • Changes in light transmission characteristics caused by various types of oil contaminations were experimentally measured with a built-in type wear monitoring device. Three kinds of iron powders of different size distribution, carbon duct, two kinds of solutions and grease were used for the test contaminants in this work. Light intensity of the transmitted light was measured with the contamination level. Results showed that the transmitted light intensity decreased linearly with the contamination concentration in the oil and the slope was affected by the size distribution. Light attenuation was also caused greatly by carbon dust, water contamination and poly-meric fibers in terms of the light absorption. As a result, it was proved that the optical measurement device could be applicable effectively for detecting any significant change in lubricating oils.

  • This study examined the surface modification characteristics of NBR using sealing in automobile. Surfaces of NBR were modified by RF power Ar plasma treatment. In experiment, pressure, flux, temperature were fixed and RF bias voltage. Treatment time was changed. In friction test, we used PTFE grease. After modification, surfaces of NBR showed many grooves, hydrophilic functional groups, and lipophilic functional groups. As increasing treating voltage and time, the amount of them was increased. And wetting angle and friction coefficient was decreased with increasing treating voltage and time. However, the pattern of changing friction coefficient was not fixed.

  • SMC(Sheet Molding Compound), a thermoset composite material which consists of unsaturated polyester resin, fiberglass strands, fillers, and various chemical additives for curing agent, has been widely used in fabrication of structural components. The mechanical properties of molded SMS parts are strongly dependent on material flow results during compression molding process, while such flow in molds is affected by material characteristics. For numerical simulation of SMC molding process, estimation of material property of SMC must be accomplished. In this study, flow resistance of SMC was estimated through a simple compression test using a lubricant with grease oil under the constant strain rate condition at various temperatures and the result was compared with other material data available in the literature. The accuracy of the experimentally determined flow resistance was tested by finite element analyses of compression molding of SMC. Simulation results were compared with experimental results under the plane strain condition.

  • Closed-die forging of spline was analysed using the upper bound elemental technique, Two different forging methods, denoted here as side extrusion-forging and upset forging, were proposed, The kinematically admissible velocity fields for each of the forging methods, which could express trapezoidal, rectangular and serration tooth forms, were presented. Upper bounds to forging loads and deformed configurations were predicted using the velocity fields. Theoretical results were compared with experimental ones. Experiments with lead were carried out at room temperature where grease was used as a lubricant. The present investigation revealed that analytical forging loads were reduced by using the side extrusion-forging but the upset forging could improve configuration of the final forged splines.

  • The application of epxy composite materials for the outdoor insulating systems has some significant advan-tages compared with conventional inorganic materials, that is low weight in combination with high mechanical strength, small dimensions and design versatility. The paper describes the results of high voltage investigations carried out different aging types of epoxy resin insulator and silicone grease coating. The insulators have been exposed 3000 hours to weather-o-meter and 12 months to outdoor. In this connection, the main study of paper is form the basis of develop-ment of principal technologies of epoxy composites which ard: (1)manufacturing of insulator, (2)high vol-tage testing under dry and wet condition, (3)mechani-cal properties, (4)accelerated weather-ometer test and outdoor exposed, artificial polution.
