  • A number of potential applications of aluminum foams are being identified and renewed interest in these engineering materials is also reflected by several current research projects. One of the key issues for industrial exploitation of aluminum foams is the development of cost-effective manufacturing strategies facilitating, preferably, net shape production of foams with controlled porosity and cell size, and minimized structural imperfection. Especially, melt route to aluminum foam production based on the foaming agents offer attraction of low cost and the potential for good microstructure. The present paper is focused mainly on foaming agents of melt-foam aluminum such as $TiH_2$ or $TiH_2-Al$ mixture. For the purpose of economical manufacturing, we are proposed to hydrogen induced mechanical alloying (HIMA) process. Thermo-physical properties of particles synthesized are compared with conventional methods. Specimens synthesized are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermo- gravimetry-differential scanning calorymetry (TG-DSC), pressure-composition-isotherm. (PCI).

  • The atmospheric corrosion performance of Al-alloying, Si-alloying and Al-Si-alloying steel were studied by wet/dry cyclic corrosion tests (CCT) at $30^{\circ}C$ and 60% relative humidity (RH). The corrosion electrolyte used for CCT was 0.052 wt% $NaHSO_{3}$ (pH~4) solution. The result of gravimetry demonstrated that Al-Si-bearing steels showed lower corrosion resistance than other rusted steels. But the rusted 0.7%Si-alloying steel showed a better corrosion resistance than rusted mild steel. Polarization curves demonstrated that Al-/Si-alloying and Al-Si-alloying improved the rest potential of steel at the initial stage; and accelerated the cathodic reduction and anodic dissolution after a rust layer formed on the surfaces of steels. XRD results showed that Al-Si-alloying decreased the volume fraction of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ and $\alpha-FeOOH$. The recycle of acid accelerated the corrosion of steel at the initial stage. After the rust layer formed on the steel, the leak of rust destabilized the rust layer due to the dissolution of compound containing Al (such as $FeAl_{2}O_{4}$, $(Fe,\;Si)_{2}(Fe,\;Al)O_{4}$). Al-Si-alloying is hence not suitable for improving the anti-corrosion resistance of steel in industrial atmosphere.

  • Ruthenium(Ru)-doped $TiO_2$ nanofibers were prepared using electrospun Ru-$TiO_2$/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) fibers and subsequent annealing for 1 h at temperatures in the range of $500^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. The properties of the Ru-$TiO_2$ fibers were characterized as a function of the Ru content and calcination temperature using X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetry with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and viscometer, pycnometer and dynamic tensiometer measurements. Although the diameter of the fiber decreased slightly with increasing calcination temperature, no dramatic changes were observed with respect to the ruthenium content. The XRD and FT-IR results revealed that anatase phase and ruthenium metal began to be formed after calcination at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Anatase and rutile phases and ruthenium metal coexisted in the fibers calcined above $600^{\circ}C$. No anatase phase was detected in the fibers containing ruthenium when they were calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$. The morphology of the fibers changed from smooth and uniform to porous with increasing temperature. The experimental results suggest that the calcination temperature and Ru content were influential in determining the morphology and structure of the fibers.

  • Sustainable water resource management requires the assessment of hydrological variability in response to climate fluctuations and anthropogenic activities. Determining quantitative estimates of water balance and total basin discharge are of utmost importance to understand the variations within a basin. Hard-to-reach areas with few infrastructures, coupled with lengthy administrative procedures makes in-situ data collection and water management processes very difficult and unreliable. In this study, the hydrological behavior of Lake Chad whose extent, extreme climatic and environmental conditions make it difficult to collect field observations was examined. During a 10 year period [January 2003 to December 2013], dataset from space-borne and global hydrological models observations were analyzed. Terrestial water storage (TWS) data retrieved from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), lake level variations from Satellite altimetry, water fluxes and soil moisture from Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) were used for this study. Furthermore, we combined altimetry lake volume with TWS over the lake drainage basin to estimate groundwater and soil moisture variations. This will be validated with groundwater estimates from WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM) outputs. TWS showed similar variation patterns Lake water level as expected. The TWS in the basin area is governed by the lake's surface water. As expected, rainfall from GLDAS precedes GRACE TWS with a phase lag of about 1 month. Estimates of groundwater and soil moisture content volume changes derived by combining altimetric Lake Volume with TWS over the drainage basin are ongoing. Results obtained shall be compared with WaterGap Hydrology Model (WGHM) groundwater estimate outputs.

  • Background: The global shift toward greener societies demands new technologies and work operations in the waste-management sector. However, progressive industrial methods do not necessarily consider workers' health. This study characterized workers' exposure to bioaerosols and investigated the bioaerosols' potential to engage the immune system in vitro. Methods: Full shift personal aerosol sampling was conducted over three consecutive days. Dust load was analyzed by gravimetry, fungal and actinobacterial spores were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and endotoxin by limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay. In vitro exposure of HEK cells to airborne dust samples was used to investigate the potential of inducing an inflammatory reaction. Results: The total dust exposure level exceeded the recommended occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 5.0 mg/m3 in 3 out of 15 samples. The inhalable endotoxin level exceeded the recommended exposure level by a 7-fold, whereas the fungal spore level exceeded the recommended exposure level by an 11-fold. Actinobacterial spores were identified in 8 out of 14 samples. In vitro experiments revealed significant TLR2 activation in 9 out of 14 samples vs. significant TLR4 activation in all samples. Conclusion: The present study showed that the dust samples contained potentially health-impairing endotoxin, fungi, and actinobacterial levels. Furthermore, the sampled dust contained microbial components capable of inducing TLR activation and thus have the potential to evoke an inflammatory response in exposed individuals.

  • Excess N and P from the livestock manure applied to farmlands, have entered the water systems and poses a serious threat to the natural environment. Consequently, there has been recent awareness towards the management of livestock manure and its related fields. In this study, piggery wastewater was collected from a piggery in Pohang city, Korea. At 800℃, thermal decomposition of a natural stone, magnesite (MgCO3), yielded powered MgO with particle sizes ranging between 10 to 100 ㎛. Furthermore, NH4+-N and PO43--P were recovered as struvite precipitates from the piggery wastewater, by adjusting the pH with MgO and H3PO4. At pH 10, the recovery efficiencies of NH4+-N and PO43--P were found to be 86.1% and 94.1%, respectively. Using an X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), the struvite in the precipitate was confirmed to be consistent with standard pure struvite. Further, the purity of the struvite precipitate was analyzed using an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and thermal gravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and found to be between 79.2% and 93.0%. Additionally, struvite-containing piggery wastewater and sawdust were mixed in a weight ratio of 2.5:1 and processed into a mature compost. The newly manufactured compost passed all quality standards required for first-class graded livestock composts. Moreover, this compost was sprayed directly onto the soil at the test site, and various parameters of the soil's effluent, such as total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and dissolved oxygen (DO), were analyzed and measured. Based on these results, it is determined that the newly manufactured compost can more significantly reduce water pollution than commercial compost.

  • Among the many odor materials, aldehyde has bad influences not only on human nose, but also on human health. Aldehyde has a strong odor at infinitesimal level, such as down to ppt concentration. Also aldehydes are highly reactive and have poor stability. Therefore, manufacture of standard gases, analysis of aldehydes are very difficult compare to other air pollution analysis. Aldehyde CRM containing 4 different aldehydes at $10{\mu}mol/mol$ (ppm) is developed by using gravimetry method according to ISO 6142 guide. The standard gases were reproduced again, and examined its reproducibility of preparation by GC-FID. The developed aldehyde CRM's certified value showed a relative expanded uncertainties of 2.11 % (95 % of confidence level, k=2).

  • Waxes currently used as a coating material to preserve surfaces of outdoor iron sculptures tend to face lower coating strength and efflorescence due to the aging from air pollution and acid rains. Consequently, they are subjected to repeated corrosions shortly after the treatment. And the sculptures face the problem losing their original nature because of the changes of colors and lusters, so this convergence study aims at developing wax with better performance than the existing materials. For this reason, the study identified the effects of physical property using the environmental experiments such as the tests of salt spray and gas corrosion as well as the analysis of luster level and thermo-gravimetry. As this study result, the developed ISC wax showed the excellent blocking effect from salt water and coating durability more than five times compared with the existing waxes, better acid resistance by two-four times, sun block effect by 2-10 times, improved luster variance by 3-16 times, improved thermo-stability and durability by 0.5-5 times, and therefore demonstrating far better coating effect than the existing waxes. In the light of these findings, this study contributes for this new development which can replace the existing waxes used so far in order to preserve the outdoor iron sculptures.

  • In order to choose alternative environmental-friendly cleaning agents, it is very important in the present point that the systematic selection procedures should be introduced and applied to the industry through the evaluation of their cleaning ability, environmental characteristics, and economical factors, and that the objective and effective evaluation methods of cleanliness should be established for the industry. Thus, a novel cleaning evaluation method utilizing optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) among various methods of cleaning ability was studied in this study. The contaminants used in this cleaning experiments were flux, solder, grease, cutting oil, and mixed soil of 35% grease and 65% cutting oil. The cleaning agents developed or prepared in our laboratory were employed and their cleaning ability were comparatively evaluated by the OSEE, gravimetry and contact angle methods. The experimental results in this work showed that flux cleaning efficiency measured by the OSEE method was similar to that of the gravimetric method, but that the OSEE method could not be compared with gravimetric method for the case of solder or grease cleaning because the contaminants radiate or absorb ultra-violet light. In case of cutting oil cleaning, the gravimetric method indicated its limitation of cleaning efficiency of cutting oil since it showed cleaning efficiency of 100%, even though residual soil remaining on the substrate surface a little after its cleaning. The comparative experimental results of cleaning ability evaluated by the OSEE- and contact angle measurement methods showed that they were similar in case of cleaning of flux, mixed soil and cutting oil. It was judged that the contact angle measurement method could evaluate the cleaning ability more precisely than the OSEE method for cleaning solder and grease.

  • The IPA-co-HDO-co-(TPA/MA) copolymers for all-vanadium redox flow battery were synthesized by melt condensation polymerization using isophthalic acid(IPA), 1,6-hexandiol (HDO), terephthalic acid(TPA) and maleic anhydride(MA). The amination of chloromethylated IPA-co- HDO-co-(TPA/MA)(CIHTM) copolymer was carried out using trimethylamine, and the anion exchange membrane was also prepared by UV crosslinking reaction. The structure and thermal stability of IHTM copolymers were confirmed by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, and TGA analysis. The anion membrane properties such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity, electric resistance and electrical conductivity, were measured by gravimetry, titration and LCR meter. The efficiency of the all-vanadium redox flow battery was analyzed. The ion exchange capacity, electric resistance and electrical conductivity were 1.10 meq/g, $1.98{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, and 0.009 S/cm, respectively. The efficiency of charge-discharge, voltage, and energy for the allvanadium redox flow battery were 96.5, 74.6, 70.0%, respectively.
