On April 4 to 6, 2005, there was a huge fire in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea, which burned over 250ha of forests and 246 buildings including 160 houses. The effects of reseeding rate and timing on productivity and nutritive value of forages in the forest fire burnt pasture in this study were investigated. The effect of reseeding could not be seen in the burnt pastures in terms of forage productivity and quality in short term but there was a long-term effect particularly with higher reseeding rates at later days after the fire on forage botanical composition. We concluded that forest fire brought reduction in pasture forage yield for a short period but it did not make a significant effect for a long term.

The present study was carried out to explore the potential effect of shading degrees on yields and nutritive values of forage in forest-grassland. This experiment was conducted this study under different natural shading at National Institute of Animal Science, Cheonan province in Korea, for 2 years (from 2015 to 2016). This experiment was consisted of four different shading degrees, such as full sunlight (control, 10% below), 25% of shading, 35% of shading, 50% of shading. Pasture species used in this study were orchardgrass 'Kodiwin', perenial ryegrass 'Linn', tall fescue 'Purumi', kentuky bluegrass 'Kenblue', and white clover 'Ladino'. Botanical composition of orchardgrass was higher than that of perenial ryegrass, tall fescue and kentuky bluegrass. Dry matter (DM) yields of forage decreased as increasing shading degrees. DM yields of forage significantly decreased as increasing shading degrees and lots of cutting times under increasing shading degrees decreased DM yields of forage. The content of crude protein increased as increasing shading degrees and the contents of acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), the activity of total digestible nutrient (TDN) and in-vitro digestibility (IVD), and relative feed value (RFV) were similar in control and different shading. This study suggests that orchardgrass is major component for forest-grassland and establishment of orchardgrass can be improved by increasing shading degrees.

To provide the basic data on the utilization of chlorella as a method to improve the quality of forage, we examined the effect of the addition of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and chlorella on the change of nutritive value, quality and microbes on Italian ryegrass and alfalfa mixture silage (IRG-Alfalfa silage). The nutritive values of IRG-Alfalfa silage were not significantly different in all treatments. The pH of IRG-Alfalfa silage decreased in both LAB and chlorella treatments. Further the content of lactic acid in the LAB treatment increased as compared to the control, and also significantly increased in the treatment of LAB with chlorella (p<0.05). In addition, the number of LAB increased in lactic acid bacteria treatment as compared to the control, and also increased in the treatment of LAB with chlorella (p<0.05). Therefore, we suggest that LAB and chlorella would improve the quality of IRG-Alfalfa silage.

With a purpose of finding out the effects of phosphatic fertilizer application at the grassland establishment and management on the dry matter yield and quality of grasses, a field experiment was arranged with four treatments as a randomized complcte block design and lasted from September, 19 89 to October, 1991 in hilly area near Suwon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. As a early plant growth. winter hardiness. growth vigour and coverage of grasses of the plots with phosphatic fertilizer were better than those of the plots without $P_2O_5$. and the effect of application at the management was much better than that at the establishment of grassland. 2. The effect of phosphatic fertilizer on DM yield of legume was higher than of grass. Total DM yield with phosphatic fertilizer at the only establishment (5.688 kg/ha). at the only management (8.014 kg/ha) and at both the establishment and management of grassland (1 1,082 kg/ha) was much more increased by 38, 95 and 169% than that without phosphatic fertilizer (4.1 19 kg/ha), respectively. 3. The chemical component of crude protein and crude fat with phosphatic fertilizer was a little higher, on the other hand, content of NFE was lower than that without $P_2O_5$ fertilization, but the contents of crude fiber and crude ash did not tend to differentiate between treatments. 4. Production of encrgy(TDN, StE and NEL) with phosphatic fertilization at the establishment and the management of grassland was appeared to increase by 34 to 390h and 72 to 99% than that without $P_2O_5$, respectively. Production of curde protein with $P_2O_5$ tended to be similar to production of energy.

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity is a serious limitation for agricultural production. In this study, we explored tolerance mechanism associated with Cd toxicity tolerance in alfalfa plants. We used three distinct alfalfa cultivars M. sativa cv. Vernal, M. sativa cv. Zhung Mu, and M. sativa cv. Xing Jiang Daye in this study. Cd showed declined chlorophyll score in Xing Jiang Daye compared with Zhung Mu and Vernal. No significant change observed among the cultivars for root and shoot length. Atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis demonstrated a significant accumulation of Cd, Fe, S and PC in distinct alfalfa cultivars. However, Zhung Mu and Xing Jiang Daye declined Cd accumulation in root, where Fe, S and PC incremented only in Zhung Mu. It suggests that excess Cd in Zhung Mu possibly inhibited in root by the increased accumulation of Fe, S and PC. This was further confirmed by the response of Fe (MsIRT1) and S transporters (MsSULTR1;2 and MsSULTR1;3), and MsPCS1 genes associated with Fe, S and PC availability and translocation in roots and shoots. It suggests that specially the transcript signal inducing the responses to adjust Cd especially in Zhung Mu. This finding provides the essential background for further molecular breeding program for forage crops.

The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of new lactic acid bacteria as an additive for improving the quality of the Miscanthus sinnensis silage fermentation. The percentage of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculated silage showed similar to the control. The pH of Miscanthus sinnensis (MS) silage in the treatment of LAB inoculation significantly decreased as compared to control (p<0.05). The content of lactic acid in the treatment of LAB inoculation significantly increased (p<0.05) as compared to control, but, the content of acetic acid was reduced in the treatment of LAB inoculation. Also, numbers of the lactic acid bacteria population were higher in LAB-treated silage as compared to control (p<0.05). The present study suggested that an addition of lactic acid bacteria significantly improved the quality fermentation in Miscanthus sinnensis silage.

Teff grass is a warm season C4 annual grass that is used for dry hay, silage and haylage. We have developed a high-frequency plant regeneration system for teff grass via callus culture using mature seeds. It was revealed that mature seeds cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/l 2,4-D, 0.5 g/L proline, 0.5 g/L casamino acid and 3 g/L Gelrite under light condition produced the highest percentage of callus formation (91.9%). Addition of cytokinins (BA) at 0.0~0.5 mg/L to media containing 2 mg/l 2,4-D enhanced callus growth. The most suitable medium for plant regeneration from dehydrated calli was MS agar medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l NAA, 1 mg/l BA, 0.5 g/L proline, 0.5 g/L casamino acid 3 g/L Gelrite which induced the highest percentage of calli forming shoots (47.0%). The shoots were rooted at the highest rate (100%) when transferred onto 1/2 MS medium and acclimated in greenhouse conditions.

Climate change effects are particularly apparent in many cool-season grasslands in South Korea. Moreover, the probability of climate extremes has intensified and is expected to increase further. In this study, we performed climate change vulnerability assessments in cool-season grasslands based on the analytic hierarchy process method to contribute toward effective decision-making to help reduce grassland damage caused by climate change and extreme weather conditions. In the analytic hierarchy process analysis, vulnerability was found to be influenced in the order of climate exposure (0.575), adaptive capacity (0.283), and sensitivity (0.141). The climate exposure rating value was low in Jeju-do Province and high in Daegu (0.36-0.39) and Incheon (0.33-0.5). The adaptive capacity index showed that grassland compatibility (0.616) is more important than other indicators. The adaptation index of Jeollanam-do Province was higher than that of other regions and relatively low in Gangwon-do Province. In terms of sensitivity, grassland area and unused grassland area were found to affect sensitivity the most with index values of 0.487 and 0.513, respectively. The grassland area rating value was low in Jeju-do and Gangwon-do Province, which had large grassland areas. In terms of vulnerability, that of Jeju-do Province was lower and of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province higher than of other regions. These results suggest that integrating the three aspects of vulnerability (climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity) may offer comprehensive and spatially explicit adaptation plans to reduce the impacts of climate change on the cool-season grasslands of South Korea.

Ensiling is the most preferred technology to preserve the silage quality with high nutrients by the presence of lactic acid bacteria. In this study, lactic acid bacteria RJ1 and S22 were used to make the silages from different leguminous plants such as alfalfa, hairy vetch and red clover. Experimental groups were divided into control and LAB inoculated groups. LAB inoculated group; all legumes treated with a mixture of RJ1 and S22 and made an anaerobic condition for 45d. Without the addition of LAB considered the control group. The results showed that the lactic acid content was higher in all silages in response to LAB treatment and acetic acid content was slightly increased except red clover by LAB compared to control silages. A poor silage quality marker butyric acid was reduced all legume silages in response to LAB inoculation than control silages. The organic acid is closely associated with microbial population experimental silages. We noted that higher LAB and lower yeast were found in the silage in response to LAB treatment. The contents of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) were not altered significantly between control and LAB treated silages. Overall data suggested that the inclusion of additional LAB potentially enhance the silage quality and preserved the nutrients for long period.
