Graphite was diffusion-bonded by hot-pressing to W-25Re alloy using a Ti interlayer. For the joining, a uniaxial pressure of 25 MPa was applied at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in an argon atmosphere with a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C\;min^{-1}$. The interfacial microstructure and elemental distribution of the W-25Re/Ti/Graphite joints were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Hot-pressed joints appeared to form a stable interlayer without any micro-cracking, pores, or defects. To investigate the high-temperature stability of the W-25Re/Ti/Graphite joint, an oxy-acetylene torch test was conducted for 30 seconds with oxygen and acetylene at a 1.3:1 ratio. Cross-sectional analysis of the joint was performed to compare the thickness of the oxide layer and its chemical composition. The thickness of W-25Re changed from 250 to $20{\mu}m$. In the elemental analysis, a high fraction of rhenium was detected at the surface oxidation layer of W-25Re, while the W-25Re matrix was found to maintain the initial weight ratio. Tungsten was first reacted with oxygen at a torch temperature over $2500^{\circ}C$ to form a tungsten oxide layer on the surface of W-25Re. Then, the remaining rhenium was subsequently reacted with oxygen to form rhenium oxide. The interfacial microstructure of the Ti-containing interlayer was stable after the torch test at a temperature over $2500^{\circ}C$.
Spheroidal graphite cast irons which are Fe-3%C-(4-6)%Si-(0-0.5)%Mo were studied to improve not only heat resistance but also mechanical properties. With increasing Mo content, the graphitization was decreased and carbide volume fraction was increased. The graphite spheroidization ratio was not decreased in Fe-3%C-6%Si-Mo system cast iron with increasing Mo content, but that was decreased in Fe-3%C-4%Si-Mo system and Fe-3%C-5%Si-Mo system cast irons. Hardness was increased with the Si and Mo contents. At constant Si content, tensile strength was increased with increasing Mo content, but that was decreased at 6%Si. In the experiment of oxidation, weight gain was decreased as the Si and/or Mo content increased, but increased at 1.5%Mo content.

During the last half decade, chemically modified graphene (CMG) has been studied in the wide range of applications, such as polymer composites, energy-related materials, sensors, 'paper'-like materials, field-effect transistors (FET), inks, actuators, and biomedical applications due to its excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Chemical modification of graphene oxide, which is generated from graphite oxide, which is produced by simple oxidation of graphite, has been a promising route to achieve mass production of CMG platelets via their colloidal suspensions. Graphene oxide contains a range of reactive oxygen functional groups, which renders it a good candidate for use in the aforementioned applications (among others) through chemical functionalizations. In this presentation, I will discuss my recent research activities on the fundamental chemistry of graphite oxide, as well as novel applications based on CMGs. Topics will include the chemical structure of CMGs and colloidal suspensions of CMG platelets, as well as a wide variety of applications.
The SiC/MoSi2 composite materials were fabricated by infiltrating the mixture of molybdenum disilicide and metal silicon(MoSi2+Si=100) to a porous compact of silicon carbide and graphite under the vacuum atmosphere of 10-1 torr. The specimen were oxidized in dry air under 1 atm at 130$0^{\circ}C$~150$0^{\circ}C$ for 240 hours. The oxidation behavior was evaluated by the weight gain and loss per unit area of the oxidized samples. Also, SEM and XRD analysis of the oxidized surface of the samples were carried out. With increasing the MoSi2 content and oxidation temperature, the passive oxidation was found. The trend of weight gain of all samples was followed the parabolic rate law with the formation of a protective layer of cristobalite on the surface.

Graphite material has been recognized as a very competitive candidate for reflector, moderator, and structural material for very high temperature reactor (VHTR). Since VHTR is operated up to $900-950^{\circ}C$, small amount of impurity may accelerate the oxidation and degradation of carbon graphite, which results in increased porosity and lowered fracture toughness. In this study, ultrasonic wave propagation properties were investigated for both as-received and degradated material, and the feasibility of ultrasonic testing (UT) was estimated based on the result of ultrasonic property measurements. The ultrasonic properties of carbon graphite were half, more than 5 times, and 1/3 for velocity, attenuation, and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio respectively. Degradation reduces the ultrasonic velocity slightly by 100 m/s, however the attenuation is about 2 times of as-receive state. The results of probability of detection (POD) estimation based on S/N ratio for side-drilled-hole (SDHs) of which depths were less than 100 mm were merely affected by oxidation and degradation. This result suggests that UT would be reliable method for nondestructive testing of carbon graphite material of which thickness is not over 100 mm. In accordance with the result produced by commercial automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) system, human error of ultrasonic testing is barely expected for the material of which thickness is not over 80 mm.
Characteristics of reduction properties and carbon deposition of $CuFe_2O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ were investigated by using TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and gas analysis at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD analyses indicated that the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ was composed of Fe, graphite and $Fe_3C$ phases. In contrast, the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ did not show the graphite or $Fe_3C$ phases. It was observed by SEM analysis that the surface of the $Fe_3O_4$ was completely covered with carbon, after methane partial oxidation. From gas analysis, $CuFe_2O_4$ showed much higher methane conversion and reduction kinetics as compared to the $Fe_3O_4$ under the same reaction conditions and the estimated carbon deposition amounts on the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ was much lower than those on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ during the syngas production process. It was found by TEM that carbon on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ particles has a platelet shape.
A conversion layer of SiC was fabricated on the graphite substrate by a chemical vapor reaction method in order to enhance the oxidation resistance of graphite. The effect of boron carbide containing powder bed on the morphology of SiC conversion layer was investigated during the chemical vapor reaction of graphite with the reactive silicon-source at $1650^{\circ}C\;and\;1700^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The presence of boron species enhanced the conversion of graphite into SiC, and altered the morphology of the conversion layer significantly as well. A continuous and thick SiC conversion layer was formed only when the boron source was used with the other silicon compounds. The boron is deemed to increase the diffusion of SiOx in SiC/C system.
This study was focused on the improvement of production techniques of small crucibles in relation with the appropriate selection of raw materials, various batch compositions and physical and chemical characteristics of the crucibles. Various tests gave the optimum batch composition for the carbon bond graphite cructble as follows: Pyontaek graphite flake (refractory aggregate) : 40Part Silicon carbide: 15Part Tar pitch (binder) : 11Part Inorganic additives (to improve the oxidation resistance) : 15 Part Cryolite : 3 Part Ferro manganese : 2 Part Ferrosilicon : 25 Part Crucibles pressed with 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 12$0^{\circ}C$. and fired in reducing atmosphere at 120$0^{\circ}C$ brought the most favorable results as follows: Bulk density : 2.31 Apparent density : 2.58 Porosity : 15.2% Oxidation loss at 1, 50$0^{\circ}C$. for 3 hrs : below 3.77% Water absorption : 6.01% Compressive strength : 438kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Tensile strength : 256kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.
Mercaptopropionic acid(mpa) has been used to make self-assembled monolayer(SAMs) on the surface of graphite electrode incorporating gold nano particles, which are subsequently modified with dopamine(dopa). Such modified electrodes haying types of Gr(Au)/mpa-dopa were employed in the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH. The responses of such modified electrodes were studied in terms of electron transfer kinetics and reaction procedure in the reaction. The reaction of the surface immobilized dopa with NADH was studied using the rotating disk electrode technique and a value of $5.06{\times}10^5M^{-1}s^{-1}$ was obtained for the second-order rate constant in 0.1 M phosphate buffer(pH=7.0), which was a $EC_{cat}$ and kinetic controlled procedure. But, the modified electrodes were diffusion controlled reaction having $4.64{\times}10^{-4}cm^2s^{-1}$ of the coefficient within $10^{-3}s$ after starting the reaction.
