Accurate quantitative evaluation of baseflow contribution to streamflow is imperative to address seasonal drought vulnerability, flood occurrence and groundwater management concerns for efficient and sustainable water resources management in watersheds. Several baseflow separation algorithms using recursive filters, graphical method and tracer or chemical balance have been developed but resulting baseflow outputs always show wide variations, thereby making it hard to determine best separation technique. Therefore, the current global shift towards implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in water resources is employed to compare the performance of deep learning models with conventional hydrograph separation techniques to quantify baseflow contribution to streamflow of Piney River watershed, Tennessee from 2001-2021. Streamflow values are obtained from the USGS station 03602500 and modeled to generate values of Baseflow Index (BI) using Web-based Hydrograph Analysis (WHAT) model. Annual and seasonal baseflow outputs from the traditional separation techniques are compared with results of Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and simple Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) models. The GRU model gave optimal BFI values during the four seasons with average NSE = 0.98, KGE = 0.97, r = 0.89 and future baseflow volumes are predicted. AI offers easier and more accurate approach to groundwater management and surface runoff modeling to create effective water policy frameworks for disaster management.
In the present study, the finite volume method is applied for the thermal performance prediction of the natural ventilation system using vertical solar chimney whereas, design parameters are optimized through the response surface methodology (RSM). The computational simulations are performed for various parameters of the solar chimney such as absorber temperature (40≤Tabs≤70℃), inlet temperature (20≤T0≤30℃), inlet height of (0.1≤h≤0.2 m) and chimney width (0.1≤d≤0.2 m). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out to identify the design parameters that influence the average Nusselt number (Nu) and mass flow rate (ṁ). Then, quadratic polynomial regression models were developed to predict of all the response parameters. Consequently, numerical and graphical optimizations were performed to achieve multi-objective optimization for the desired criteria. According to the desirability function approach, it can be seen that the optimum objective functions are Nu=25.67 and ṁ=24.68 kg/h·m, corresponding to design parameters h=0.18 m, d=0.2 m, Tabs=46.81℃ and T0=20℃. The optimal ventilation flow rate is enhanced by about 96.65% compared to the minimum ventilation rate, while solar energy consumption is reduced by 49.54% compared to the maximum ventilation rate.
Landslides pose significant threats to many countries globally, yet the development and implementation of effective landslide early warning systems (LEWS) remain challenging due to multifaceted complexities spanning scientific, technological, and political domains. Addressing these challenges demands a holistic approach. Technologically, integrating thresholds, such as rainfall thresholds, with real-time data within accessible, open-source software stands as a promising solution for LEWS. This article introduces LandScient_EWS, a PHP-based program tailored to address this need. The software facilitates the comparison of real-time measured data, such as rainfall, with predefined landslide thresholds, enabling precise calculations and graphical representation of real-time landslide advisory levels across diverse spatial scales, including regional, basin, and hillslope levels. To illustrate its efficacy, the program was applied to a case study in Medellin, Colombia, where a rainfall event on August 26, 2008, triggered a shallow landslide. Through pre-defined rainfall intensity and duration thresholds, the software simulated advisory levels during the recorded rainfall event, utilizing data from a rain gauge positioned within a small watershed and a single grid cell (representing a hillslope) within that watershed. By identifying critical conditions that may lead to landslides in real-time scenarios, LandScient_EWS offers a new paradigm for assessing and responding to landslide hazards, thereby improving the efficiency and effectiveness of LEWS. The findings underscore the software's potential to streamline the integration of rainfall thresholds into both existing and future landslide early warning systems.

A relay servo, one of the nonlinear sytsems, is inherently compact compared to a linear system for an equivalent control problem. The power element or actuator is not adjusted proportionally in accordance with an error signals but rather is switched abruptly between several discrete conditions. Usually switched conditions are off, full, forward or full reverse. The relay system is a particularly simple and compact one, but probably more effort has been expended on its analysis and design than on all other systems together. Early studies in the art were made by Goldfarb, austin, Oppelt and Kochenburger on the describing function method, which can be used as an approximate check on the stability of the system. The describing function method is based on the assumption that any periodic wave could be approximated as a fundamental one in wide ranges of practical applications. A relay servo system usually operates on a limit cycle condition as the loop gain increases. The stability analysis compensation or any improvement effort based on the describing function method sometimes may present considerable discrepancies on physically realized practical systems. An approach to exact periodic solutions of a relay servo system is much important for the analysis, design and system improvement. This paper dells with periodic solutions of a relay servo system on the basis of describing function and generalized chopper wave form which is composed of infinite number of harmonic series. Various ways of graphical representation were attempted to get periodic solutions, some of which have shown its validity in rapid approach to exact solutions and also in judgement of system behavior.

Automatic test case generation for testing an embedded software is considered. Existing tools for test case generation such as finite state machine or mutant test usually adopt top down approach and depend upon graphical transition and decision table, which makes it difficult to find out where the bugs exist. Also it is hard to describe the special features of embedded systems such as concurrent execution of individual components. Most of embedded systems interacts with the real world, receiving signals through sensors or switches and sending output signals to actuators that somehow manipulate the environment. Embedded software controls the entire system based on the logics such as interpreting the sensor inputs and making the actuators to start or stop their intended operation. This study proposes an automatic test case generation procedure that tests the system starting from the control logics of sensors, switches and actuators and then their concurrent execution controls, and finally the entire system operation. Such a stepwise approach makes it easy to generate test cases to tell where the bugs of embedded software exist.

Although conventional text-based passwords are used as the most common authentication method, they have significant drawbacks such as guess attacks, dictionary attacks, key loggers, and shoulder-surfing. To address the vulnerabilities of traditional text-based passwords, graphical password schemes have been developed as possible alternative solutions, but they have a potential drawback that they are more vulnerable to shoulder-surfing than conventional text-based passwords. In this paper, we present a new Hangul password input method to prevent shoulder-surfing attacks. Our approach uses Hangul as a password, and it requires the users to locate their password in the given wheeling password grid instead of entering the password. Our approach makes it difficult for attackers to observe a user's password since the system shows the users' passwords with decoy characters as the noise on the screen. Also, we provide security analysis for random attacks, dictionary attacks, and shoulder-surfing attacks, and it shows that our password system is robust against these attacks.

A practical method to investigate the user interface of web based Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) on the internet environment is established. Because the industrial FMS controller requires a lot of gadget, such as switch, dial, button, etc., for actual work-site flexible operation sufficiently, the user interface of the controller is significantly complex. The support for operational convenience of FMS controller can increase productivity and efficiency of the user, operational personnel of FMS. While most FMS provide their application programming interface(API) and graphical user interface(GUI) with adequate mechanism itself when used in stand alone, there is increasing demand for FMS that can operate with the intuitional user interface find virtual reality(V/R) environment. This thesis considers the intuitional user interface of Web-based FMS first, and from this, goes a step further, improves as virtual reality environment of FMS on the internet environments by using the feature based modeling technique approach and cartoon rendering. The feature-based modeling technique approach is applied to FMS line which is consist of facilities such as machining center, CNC lathe, autonomous guided vehicle, rail guided vehicle, and various controllers. In this study, the FMS established the intuitional user interface is able to obtain not only the operational convenience but also the enough productivity and significant efficiency.

Recently, lots of anti-phishing schemes have been developed. Several products identify phishing sites and show the results on the address bar of the internet browser, but they determine only by domain names or IP addresses. Although this kind of method is effective against recent DNS pharming attacks, there is still a possibility that hidden attacks which modifies HTML codes could incapacitate those anti-phishing programs. In this paper, the cognitive approach which compares images to decide phishing or pharming is presented, using system tray and balloon tips that are hard to fake with pop-ups or flash in order for users to compare pictures from connecting sites and system tray. It differs from an old method that a program analyzes IP or domains to judge if it is phishing or pharming, but observes if there were HTML code changing between plug-ins and a server.

It is necessary to apply process algebra and logic in order to analyze and verify safety requirements for Smart IoT Systems due to distributivity and mobility of the systems over some predefined geo-temporal space. However the analysis and verification cannot be fully intuitive over the space due to the fact that the existing process algebra and logic are very limited to express the distributivity and the mobility. In order to overcome the limitations, the paper presents a new logic, namely for GTS-VL (Geo-Temporal Space-Visual Logic), visualization of the analysis and verification over the space. GTS-VL is the first order logic that deals with relations among the different types of blocks over the space, which is the graph that visualizes the system behaviors specified with the existing dTP-Calculus. A tool, called SAVE, was developed over the ADOxx Meta-Modeling Platform in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach, and the advantages and practicality of the approach was shown with the comparative analysis of PBC (Producer-Buffer-Consumer) example between the graphical analysis and verification method over the textual method with SAVE tool.
Equivalent Single-Degree-of-Freedom(SDOF) analysis, most used for blast-resistant design, does not consider the effects of gravity load on the performance evaluation of blast resistance of structural members. However, since there exists gravity load on columns and walls of structures, the blast resistance of structural members should be evaluated considering gravity load on them. In this paper, an approach to reflect the gravity load effects on the equivalent SDOF analysis for dynamic blast response of structural members is proposed. For this purpose, the parametric studies using finite element analysis were performed by varying maximum blast load, blast load duration, and gravity load with constant the resistance and natural period of a structural member. The finite element analysis results were compared with the equivalent SDOF analysis results and the blast response of the structure member was estimated by conducting finite element analyses for various gravity loads. Finally, a graphical solution for ductility of a structural member with the variables of blast load, gravity load and structural member properties was developed. The blast response of structural members under gravity load could be estimated reasonably and easily by using this graphical solution.
