  • In order to examine the availability and effectiveness of crab shell for the removal of heavy metals in aqueous solution the crab shell was compared with cation exchange resin(CER), zeolite granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon(PAC) on aspects of heavy metal removal capacity rate and efficiency. In the removal of Pb, Cd and Cr, the heavy metal removal capacity of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents (CER, zeolite, GAC, PAC) and the order of heavy metal removal capacity was crab shell>CER>zeolite>PAC GAC. However in the removal of Cu, the result of crab shell was slightly lower than that of CER. The initial heavy metal removal rate was affected by the sorts of sorbents and metals. In all heavy metals the heavy metal removal rate of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents. Under the heavy metal concentration of 1.0 mmole/$\ell$ the heavy metal removal efficiency of crab shell was maintained as 93~100% which was much higher than those of any other sorbents.

  • To obtain the breakthrough characteristics for the design of fixed bed adsorption plant, adsorption experiment on granular activated carbon was performed with tharonil in the fixed bed. The pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity of tharonil estimated by the concentration-time curve and adsorption isotherm were $D_s=2.825{\times}10^{-9}cm^2/s,\;D_p=1.26{\times}10^{-5}cm^2/s$, respectively. From comparison of the pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity, it was found that surface diffusion was controlling step for intrapaticle diffusion. The breakthrough curve predicted by constant pattern-linear driving force model were shown to agree with the experimental results. The surface diffusivity and film mass transfer coefficient had no effect on the theoretical breakthrough curve but the adsorption isotherm had fairly influence on it. Appearance time of breakthrough curve is faster with the increase flow rate and inflow concentration of liquid. The utility of granular activated carbon is enhanced with the increase of bed height and with the decrease of inflow rate.

  • Counterflow oxidation was developed and evaluated for treatment of organics that adsorbed in/on granular activated carbon(GAC). This reaction is a method that destructs and removes organics adsorbed, at the same time, regenerates waste carbon, uti lizing a self-sustained flame which propagates itself ina direction counter to the oxygen flow. The results showed that the mass loss of carbon and flam temperature were strongly dependent on the flow rate of oxyen, adsorptive capability of regenerated carbon completely was recovered, as well as destrution and removal efficiency of thermally stable PCBs was achieved with the value of better than 99.99%.

  • Activated carbons prepared by chemical activation of organic waste sludges with $ZnCl_2$ and $K_2S$ have been studied in terms of their pore development and adsorptivity. Pore development of the carbons prepared from organic waste sludges was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption at 77K. The $ZnCl_2$-activated carbon produced by chemical activation with zinc chloride exhibited type I isotherm characteristics according to the BDDT classification, suggesting the presence of micropores formed by activation process. The isotherms of the commercial powdered activated carbon and $K_2S$-activated carbon reveal a hysteresis similar to that of type IV in BDDT classification, indicating the formation of mesopores. This result implies that the major pores of $K_2S$-activated carbon are composed of meso and micropores, and a macropores are minor. The adsorptive capacities of metal on the $K_2S$-activated carbon prepared from organic waste sludges were found to be superior to those on a commercial granular activated carbon. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms yield a fairly good fit to the adsorption data, indicating a monolayer adsorption of metals onto $K_2S$-activated carbon. The adsorptive capacity of the $K_2S$-activated carbon was superior to $ZnCl_2$-activated carbon for $PO_4$-P, and vice versa for $NO_3$-N. From the results of the studies reported here, it can be concluded that activated carbons with adsorptivity superior to commercial granular activated carbons can be produced from organic waste sludge using a two-step carbonization/activation procedure with zinc chloride or potassium sulfide as the activating agents.

  • The adsorption characteristics of amatanth dye by granular activated carbon were experimently investigated in the batch adsorption. Kinetic studies of adsorption of amaranth dye were carried out at 298, 308 and 318 K, using aqueous solutions with 100, 200 and 300 mg/L initial concentration of amatanth. It was established that the adsorption equilibrium of amaranth dye on granular activated carbon was successfully fitted by Langmuir isotherm equation at 298 K. The pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were used to evaluate the kinetic data and the pseudo second order kinetic model was the best with good correlation. Values of the rate constant ($k_2$) have been calculated as 0.1076, 0.0531, and 0.0309 g/mg h at 100, 200 and 300 mg/L initial concentration of amatanth, respectively. Thermodynamic parameter such as activation energy, standard enthalpy, standard entropy and standard free energy were evaluated. The estimated values for standard free energy were -5.08 - -8.10 kJ/mol over activated carbon at 200 mg/L, indicated toward a spontaneous process. The positive value for enthalpy, 38.89 kJ/mol indicates that adsorption interaction of amatanth dye on activated carbon is an endothermic process.

  • Prussian blue is known as a superior material for selective adsorption of radioactive cesium ions; however, the separation of Prussian blue from aqueous suspension, due to particle size of around several tens of nanometers, is a hurdle that must be overcome. Therefore, this study aims to develop granule type adsorbent material containing Prussian blue in order to selectively adsorb and remove radioactive cesium in water. The surface of granular activated carbon was grafted using a covalent organic polymer (COP-19) in order to enhance Prussian blue immobilization. To maximize the degree of immobilization and minimize subsequent detachment of Prussian blue, several immobilization pathways were evaluated. As a result, the highest cesium adsorption performance was achieved when Prussian blue was synthesized in-situ without solid-liquid separation step during synthesis. The sample obtained under optimal conditions was further analyzed by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry, and it was confirmed that Prussian blue, which is about 9.7% of the total weight, was fixed on the surface of the activated carbon; this level of fixing represented a two-fold improvement compared to before COP-19 modification. In addition, an elution test was carried out to evaluate the stability of Prussian blue. Leaching of Prussian blue and cesium decreased by 1/2 and 1/3, respectively, compared to those levels before modification, showing increased stability due to COP-19 grafting. The Prussian blue based adsorbent material developed in this study is expected to be useful as a decontamination material to mitigate the release of radioactive materials.

  • Nitrate adsorption from aqueous solutions onto zinc chloride ($ZnCl_2$) treated coconut Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) was studied in a batch mode at two different initial nitrate concentrations (25 and 50 mg/L). The rate of nitrate uptake on prepared media was fast in the beginning, and 50% of adsorption was occurred within 10 min. The adsorption equilibrium was achieved within one hour. The mechanism of adsorption of nitrate on $ZnCl_2$ treated coconut GAC was investigated using four simplified kinetic models : the rate parameters were calculated for each model. The kinetic analysis indicated that pseudo-second-order kinetic with pore-diffusion-controlled was the best correlation of the experimental kinetic data in the present adsorption study.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the variation of physical properties and adsorption capacity after regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC). It was found that the loss rate of regenerated carbon was related to the usage time of GAC. The correlations between iodide number and loss rate also determined. Effective size and uniformity coefficient for regenerated GAC were within a similar range compared to virgin GAC. This result indicated that the function as media is recovered. Although iodide number and specific surface area for regenerated GAC were not completely recovered compared to that of virgin GAC, cumulative pore volumes of regenerated GAC were increased. Removal efficiency of organic matter in regenerated GAC was resulted the same or slightly higher than that of virgin GAC. This result indicates that the number of mesopore responsible for removal of organic matter was increased after regeneration.

  • This research was performed by means of several different virgin granular activated carbons (GAC) made of each coal, coconut and wood, and the GACs were investigated for an adsorption performance of iodine-131 in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was investigated that the breakthrough points of the virgin two coals-, coconut- and wood-based GACs were observed as bed volume (BV) 7080, BV 5640, BV 5064 and BV 3192, respectively. The experimental results of adsorption capacity (X/M) for iodine-127 showed that two coal- based GACs were highest (208.6 and $139.1{\mu}g/g$), the coconut-based GAC was intermediate ($86.5{\mu}g/g$) and the wood-based GAC was lowest ($54.5{\mu}g/g$). The X/M of the coal-based GACs was 2~4 times higher than the X/M of the coconut-based and wood-based GACs.
