  • In granite quarry, stones are generally quarried along easily separating planes called as 'rock cleavage'. Because orientation and characteristics of the rock cleavage are directly involved with easy quarrying, it is the most important factor on selecting a direction of digging. Using AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility), we attempt to interpret rock fabrics in Geochang Granite Stone (JS, SD, AR, GD, BW, MD quarry) and discuss about determination of rock cleavages and correlation between the rock fabrics and cleavages. Based on mean susceptibility, thermo-susceptibility curves, and hysteresis parameters, Ti-poor MD and/or PSD magnetites are the main contributor to AMS of the granite stones. The systematic magnetic foliations with sub-vertical dip angle are developed in the whole granite quarries. In most of the granite quarries, the magnetic foliations are significantly consistent with grain plane. In the BW quarry, which has higher $P_J$ values than the others, the magnetic foliations coincide exceptionally with rift plane. These results suggest that rock cleavages in granite stone are related to rock fabrics meaning shape and spatial arrangement of crystals. Magnetic fabrics analysis using AMS method, therefore, can be a quantitative and effective tool for determination of rock cleavages in granite quarry.

  • To delineate the inhomogeneities including fractures and to estimate the freshness of rock borehole radar consisting of the reflection and tomography methods, and GPR surveys were conducted at a granite quarry mine. The borehole reflection survey using the direction finding antenna was also conducted to get the spatial orientations of reflectors. 20 MHz was adopted as the central frequency for the borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys and 100 MHz was for GPR. Through the interpretation of borehole reflection data using dipole and direction finding antenna as well as GPR images, which are good agreement with each other, we could determine the orientation of the major fractures in three dimensional way. Parts of travel time curves of tomography data showed the anisotropy, which is uncommon in granite quarry. By comparing the tomography data and TeleViewer images, the anisotropy effect in this area are closely related to fine fissures aligned in the same direction. The area confined by the two fractures, MF2 and MF5, might consist of the most fresh granite in the surveyed area, which was concluded from the borehole radar tomography, and GPR images as well as the distribution of anisotropy.

  • This study was designed, firstly, to determine the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of some rock aggregates, secondly, to offer interrelationships between those and mechanical properties, and thirdly, to evaluate their suitability for concrete aggregates. Mineralogical, chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of the studied rock aggregates indicate that granite from BJ quarry and banded gneisses from KB. HI and SK quarry, and quartzite from the Hongcheon riverside are not proper to cement concrete aggregates because of quartz's potential possibility of alkali-silica reaction, and limestone in SY quarry is proper to asphalt concrete aggregates owing to dolomite causing alkali-carbonate reaction. Augen gneiss and diorite from KB and SA quarry, respectively, are to be not suitable for concrete aggregates because of biotite contents, but augen gneiss in HI quarry and gneisses in Hongcheon riverside are proper to concrete aggregates because of mineralogical and mechanical characteristics.

  • Microcracks that consist of quarry planes of granite are an essential factor affecting the long-term behavior of granite. In this paper, fine-grained granite distributed in the Tsukuba area of Japan was selected and microcracks were measured by using scanline method. In addition, a new relaxation testing equipment was developed to carry out stress relaxation test under water-saturated triaxial condition. Based on the relaxation test results with the initial stress level of 75%, the axial stress is decreased by 39%-49% just after the start of the tests, and the totally relaxed stress is 10∼24 MPa in 190 ERT (Elapsed relaxation time, hour). In addition, the relaxed stress is increased with the density of cracks which are parallel to axial load direction.

  • Jurassic granites of three sites, Pocheon, Geochang and Habcheon, were analysed with respect to the characteristics of the rock cleavage. Microscopic analysis for the oriented thin sections of the specimens was conducted by using the scanline survey technique to measure microcrack direction, spacing and length. The results showed that the preferred orientations of microcrack developed in quartz and feldspar arc coincident with the orientation of quarry planes. The length of microcrack is related to grain size. The length of microcrack in coarse-grained granite is longer than that in relatively fine-grained granite. In all granites, microcracks related to the preferred orientations are well developed in order of rift, grain and hardway planes in number, length and density.

  • This research are systematic and scientific approaches to obtain the distribution, occurrence and quality of granite stone for building purposes. The process of dimension stone exploration must be carried out to know the underground potentiality of granitic body using the basic data collection and study, field mapping, detailed drilling survey, televiewer technique, and physical and chemical tests in the Geochang area. Televiewer data obtained in drilling boreholes can be accurately distinguished from the discontinuous face, strike and inclination, extension which is difficult to obtain in a core logging. 3D joint images will be helpful to establish a quarry exploitation plan because the 3D joint images give quite accurate information down to depth below the outcrop surface. Through the process of the quality estimation on the Geochang site, the proven reserve estimated as dimensional building stone are calculated with good quality in petrologic and physical properties.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the quarrying and restoration characteristics on quarry in Korea. We researched quarrying and restoration status, analyzed the relationship between restoration area and permitted period, permitted area, quarrying volume, pit slope width, height, and berm width from 55 quarry sites. Most of the quarries were located in the following conditions : mixed forest, average altitude of less than 300 m, average mountain slope of $61^{\circ}$<, hillside, granite and landslide hazard class. Major quarrying characteristics were permitted period of 6~10 years, permitted area of less than 10 ha, quarrying volume of less than $1,000,000m^3$, a stone type of aggregate, a quarrying type of terrace, pit slope of $61^{\circ}$< Most quarries were restored by themselves, and the main restoration type was slope greening. Also, area ratio of flatland, pit slope, and berm was 54.9:39.6:5.5. Ccorrelation analysis showed that quarrying area was positively correlate with quarrying volume (${\alpha}=0.01$), permitted area, pit width, and pit height (a=0.05).

  • Jurassic granite from Hapcheon was analysed with respect to the characteristics of the rock cleavage. The phases of distribution of microcracks were well evidenced from the enlarged photomicrographs(${\times}6.7$) of the thin section. The planes of principal set of microcracks are parallel to the rift plane and those of secondary set are parallel to the grain plane. These rift and grain microcracks are mutually near-perpendicular on the hardway planes. Consequently the rock cleavage of Jurassic granite from the studied quarry can be related to the preferred orientation of microcracks. Microcrack parameters such as number, length and density show an order of rift > grain > hardway. These results indicate a relative magnitude of the rock cleavage. Meanwhile, brazilian tensile strengths were measured with respect to the six directions. The results revealed a strong correlation between mechanical property with microcrack parameters.

  • We have examined the applicability of the triaxial drill-bit VSP method (TAD-VSP) to the geological survey of possible sites for a high-level radioactive waste disposal repository. The seismic energy generated by a drill bit is measured by a downhole multi-component detector, and the resulting signals are processed to image the geological structure deep underground. In order to apply the TAD-VSP method to civil-engineering-scale drilling, we have developed a small but highly sensitive and precise three-component downhole seismic measurement system, and recorded drill-bit signals at a granite quarry. We have successfully imaged discontinuities in the granite, possibly related to fractures, as highly reflective zones. The discontinuities imaged by the TAD-VSP method correlate well with the results of other borehole observations. In conclusion, the TAD-VSP method is usable in geological investigations for civil engineering because the equipment is compact and it is simple to acquire the drill-bit signal.

  • The slope stabilization analysis was performed by conducting survey and selecting the representative section in order to improve slope composition and management technology of masonry embankments in the quarry area, The mean slope of the masonry retain wall (A, B, C, D, E, F) was $38.5^{\circ}$, although the steep slope of the lowest slope (A) as $59^{\circ}$. The horizontal distance of the masonry embankments is 66.2 m and the slope height is 48.3 m. However, the inclination of the masonry embankments is relatively steep and visually unstable. The slope stability analysis for the slope stability analysis was taken into account during the drying and saturation. The slope stability analysis during saturation was performed by modeling the fully saturated slope. The strength constants of the ground were divided into two groups. The safety factor for dry period was 1.850 and the safety factor for rainy season was 1.333. The safety rate of dry period and rainy season was above 1.5 and 1.2. However, the weathered granite on the upper part of the masonry embankments at the time of heavy rainfall is considered to have a high risk of slope erosion and collapse. Therefore, it is considered necessary to take measures for stabilization through appropriate maintenance such as drainage installation.
