  • The purpose of this study is to examine grandparents' role to their grandchildren, the role type, and the variables that influence the role. For this purpose, data were collected from 542 grandparents through questionnaire. The main findings are as follows: 1. The most frequent role activity that grandparents perform include 'advising their grandchildren to be successful,' 'encouraging them to study hard,' 'having them help housework,' and 'teaching them how to behave', whereas the least one is 'to teach things such as cooking, paduk, and chess.' 2. Supporting role, educating role and raising role are three types of grandparents' role activity to their grandchildren. 3. One of the significant variables affecting their role level is living arrangement of grandparents. In addition, age, economic level, and educational level are partially effective variables in grandparents' role, along with whether they work or not, how often they meet their grandchildren, and how old their grandchildren are. However, it is not among significant variables whether they are healthy, or whether they are paternal or maternal.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine income composition elements, poverty rate, and the effects of the transfer income on poverty decrease comparing grandparents-grandchildren households with living alone, couple, and living with adulthood children. Data come from the first(2005) and the second(2007) Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) and the effects of poverty decrease is examined through reconstruction of LIS income definition. The main findings are as follows. First, the total income of the grandparents-grandchildren in 2006 is the lowest and about one-fourth of the households living with adulthood children. Second, the labor income of all households are increasing but the only grandparents-grandchildren's labor income is decreasing. Third, three of ten in grandparents- grandchildren households are in poverty, the poorest households's type is the grandparents-grandchildren in 2006. Fourth, four of ten in grandparents-grandchildren is able to escape poverty after including private and public transfer income. Especially, the effects of the public transfer income in grandparents-grandchildren households is lower in 2006 than in 2004, thus the role of public income security is strongly needed. Existing research was that the poorest type among the elderly group was the living-alone households, but this results show that grandparents -grandchildren households are the poorest group. Thus, income security policy is highly needed for poor skipped-generation households.

  • This study examined what factors were associated with psychological well-being of grandparents providing daily care to their grandchildren. More focus on the role of various mediators such as caregiving perception and resources were given to investigate the complicated relationships between providing care and psychological function. I used the nationally representative data from the '2008 Korean National Survey of Welfare Need in the Elderly'. Results showed that there were diverse circumstances of caregiving. Grandparents who cared their grandchildren on behalf of dual career parents emerged predominantly from them. Findings also suggested that type of caregiving was related to external factors. Grandparents shouldering greater responsibility for their grandchildren showed lower levels of resources such as financial conditions and social support, and more negative perception of caregiving, which in turn was associated with lower psychological well-being. Finally, more financial resource and neighborhood support directly influenced more positive perception of caregiving. To enhance resources and empower grandparents raising their grandchildren, community-based intervening mechanism incorporating various environments and effective services to meet the needs of grandparents should be discussed in future studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how providing care to grandchildren and the continuity of care affects the grandparents' perception on old-age support. Specifically, in this study, providing care is divided into three continuous types: did not provide care, provided care at one point in time and provided care at two points in time. This is done to investigate how the duration of providing care influences the perception on old-age support. The results show that grandparents providing care to their grandchildren prefer to reside with their own children in the future more often than those who do not provide care to their grandchildren. Furthermore, grandparents providing care to their grandchildren during two-time points and grandparents providing care during one-time point prefer to reside with their adult children in the future more than grandparents providing care not once during two-time points. Interestingly, grandparents who provide care to grandchildren during two-time points prefer to reside with their children in the future more frequently than grandparents providing care during just one-time point. These results suggest it is likely that grandparents recognize providing care to their grandchildren as an insurance in care and support for themselves in the future. Additionally, these results suggest that the family plays an efficient and flexible role to meet needs of family members through a reciprocal relationship in Korean society where the public sector is weak. These findings have suggested theoretical implications.

  • The purpose of the study shall be to achieve an understanding of learning and emotional support services for adolescents being raised by their grandparents. In-depth interview and qualitative methodology were used to find changes in the service experiences of 10 adolescents being raised by their grandparents by analyzing their experiences at a health family support center. 1 agency in the Chungnam area was selected as a model for its program for adolescents being raised by their grandparents. Ultimately, 78 items as sub-concepts, 44 items as sub-categories, and 4 items as subjects were identified. Specifically, these included school achievement, peer group relationship, family relationship and significant others. In conclusion, they were found to experience slower physical and emotional development and tend to withdraw in social situations. They were also found to have experienced difficulties in communicating with other people and with school achievement. However, it was shown that these adolescents have made positive changes after participating in a program involving a family coach who supports and provides services for them. Also, they were found to have experienced psychologically changes, and improved in their school achievement and personal relationships. Consequently, we will require more effort to provide emotional support, adult role models, counseling intervention, and social support for them.

  • Purpose: In this study, we analyzed visual acuity of children according to the rearing of the type of parents. Methods: We have done a comparative analysis about before and after of corrected visual acuity according to the wearing actual conditions with the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010 document. Results: Visual acuity before correction of twoparent family's children was 0.91, single parent family's children was 0.83, grandparents family's children was 0.77 in low income and twoparent family's children was 0.80, single parent family's children was 0.77, grandparents family's children was 0.50 in lower middle income. Conclusions: In the rearing of low-income children, the lack of attention to visual acuity management according to the type of parents leads to a failing of visual acuity in myopia. The role of the parents is very important during this time period, so it is necessary to provide social interest giving decline prevention of vision.

  • This study examined how the relationship between grandmother-adult child solidarity, caregiving satisfaction, and grandmother's child-rearing role varies according to the relation with the grandchild. Mediation effects and moderated mediation effects were analyzed to investigate the relationship between these variables. The participants were 295 grandmothers raising preschool-aged grandchildren in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS macro, performing correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The statistical significance of the indirect effect was examined using a bootstrapping procedure. The results are as follows. First, grandmother-adult child solidarity directly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role. Second, grandmother-adult child solidarity indirectly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction. Third, the direct and indirect effects of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role are moderated by the relation with the grandchild. The direct effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on grandmother's child-rearing role was therefore shown to be significant on the maternal grandmother. Fourth, the indirect effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction was shown to be significant on the paternal grandmother. Based on the results of this study, we discussed ways to strengthen the capacity of co-parenting between grandparents and adult children.

The objects of this study were 371 grandparents who were living in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces and caring for children aged 3~5. The results of this study were as follows: First, grandfathers performed more basic needs fulfilling, active parent, and educational role and felt more psychological well-being and generativity. Second, both grandfathers and grandmothers had higher generativity as they carried out more social emotional support and educational roles. For grandmother, the more the role of fulfilling the basic desire and social emotional support, the higher the psychological well-being. For grandfather, however, the four care roles did not affect the psychological well-being.
