Quantifying the settling velocities of fine-cohesive sediments is very essential in the study of ocean pollutions as well as sedimentations. Settling properties of fine-cohesive sediments are influenced largely by aggregation which occurs as a consequence of interparticle collision and cohesion of particles. Since the degree of cohesion of fine-cohesive sediments depends on physico-chemical properties such as grain size distribution, percentage of organic materials, and mineralogical compositions, and these physico-chemical properties varies regionally, the settling velocities of fine-cohesive sediments for a specific site should be determined through field or laboratory experiment. Recently, settling velocities of fine-cohesive sediments in Saemankeum coasts and Kunsan Estuary have been measured through laboratory experiments. Using these data, the previously proposed well-known settling velocity equations for fine-cohesive sediments are examined and a new equation is developed for better representation of the measured data in this study. The newly developed settling velocity equation is simpler in the form and easier in determining the related coefficients than the previous well-known equations.

In this study, $Cu(In_{1-x},Ga_x)Se_2$ (CIGS) thin films were prepared on the Mo coated soda-lime glass by the DC magnetron sputtering and a subsequent selenization process. For the selenization process, selenization rapid thermal process(RTP) with cracker cell, which was helpful to smaller an atomic of Se, was adopted. To make CIGS layer, they were then annealed with the cracked Se. Based on this selenization method, we made several CIGS thin film and investigated the effects of In deposition time, and selenization time. Through x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), it is found that the Mo/In/CuGa structure and the high sputtering power shows the dominant chalcopyrite structure and have a uniform distribution of the grain size. The CIGS films with the In deposition time of 5 min has the best structure due to the smooth surface. And CIGS films with the selenization time of 50 min show good crystalline growth without any voids.
This study categorizes the distributed sand around coastal area of Jeju volcanic Island into three groups according to their components, and arranges their characteristics. In the case of basic physical properties, the silicate sand has slightly greater specific gravity than general sand, and the carbonate sand with widespread distribution has a lower specific gravity. In the gross, the carbonate sand has poor particle classifying and low uniformity coefficient because carbonate minerals of relatively large grain size are mixed. The relation between compressive strength and components shows conflicting tendency that silicate and carbonate components have positive correlation and negative correlation with compressive strength, respectively. Based on the components ratio of one to one, the sand having low carbonate component ratio is expected to be able to utilize in construction fine aggregate. To compare between square root (ACI 308) and cube root (KCI 2012) of compressive strength at computation of elastic modulus, it is considered to non-dimensional elastic modulus.
The purpose of this study is to quantify the settling velocities of cohesive sediments from Han estuary and to evaluate their local variation within Han estuary. This study also includes an estimation of their spatial variation, for which the settling velocities of cohesive sediments from Han estuary arecompared with those for sediments from other regions. At the same time, physical-chemical properties, such as grain size distribution, the percentage of organic contents, mineralogical composition etc are measured in this study in order to examine their correlation with settling velocities and their effect on settling velocities. Results from settling tests shaw that the settling velocities of Han estuary mud varies in the range of two orders of magnitude(from 0.01 to 1.5 mm/sec) over the corresponding concentration range of 0.1 to 80 g/L, and a feature of the settling velocity profile is quite different in quantity as compared to those of previous studies for muds from other regions. Particularly in the flocculated settling region, the settling velocity for Han estuary muds is shown to be larger than that of Saemankeum and Keum estuary sediments, while in the hindered settling region all three sediments are shown to have a similar settling velocity. However, local variability of the settling velocities within Han estuary is shown to be insignificant.

The effects of various manganese precursors for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of $NO_x$ were investigated in terms of structural, morphological, and physico-chemical analyses. $MnO_x/TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared from three different precursors, manganese nitrate, manganese acetate(II), and manganese acetate(III), by the sol-gel method. The manganese acetate(III)-$MnO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst tended to suppress the phase transition from the anatase structure to the rutile or the brookite after calcination at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. It also had a high specific surface area, which was caused by a smaller particle size and more uniform distribution than the others. The change of catalytic acid sites was confirmed by Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy and the manganese acetate(III)-$MnO_x/TiO_2$ had the strongest Lewis acid sites among them. The highest de-NOx efficiency and structural stability were achieved by using the manganese cetate(III) as a precursor, because of its high specific surface area, a large amount of anatase $TiO_2$, and the strong catalytic acidity.

This study investigated the correlation between the diatom community and the environmental variables on the tidal flat surface of the eastern part of Gomso Bay in the West coast of Korea in order to utilize the quantitative sea level record as a basic data. 24 sediment samples at 10cm intervals downstream of the Galgok Stream were used for diatom analysis, grain size analysis and CCA. As a result of diatom analysis, marine diatoms dominated at lower altitudes and the ratio of diatoms to fresh water diatoms and brackish diatoms increased toward upland. As a result of CCA, the contribution of environmental variables was analyzed as 25.3% at altitude, 21.6% at sand, 13.3% at skewness, etc. This means that altitude above sea level has the greatest influence on the diatom composition in the tidal flat surface. It suggests that the contribution of environmental variables at altitude above sea level can be used as a basic data for the quantitative records for reconstruction of paleo-sea level.
In Algeria, wastes are often stored in such conditions that do not meet standards. Today and more than ever, we really must implement an environmentally management of wastes. Recovery of waste in Algeria has a considerable delay due to the absence of a policy favorable to the development of waste management. But many researchers have shown the possibility to reuse dredged sediments in road construction. Through Europe, recent research works have been already performed on dam sediments. Present study fits into the context of the valorization of dredged sediments from Fergoug dam. They are found in considerable quantities and mainly composed of mineral phases, organic matters and water. The reservoir sedimentation poses problems for the environment and water storage, dredging becomes necessary. Civil engineering is a common way of recycling for such materials. Dredged sediments have not the required mechanical characteristics recommended by the standards as GTR guide (LCPC-SETRA 1992). So as to obtain mechanical performance, dredged sediment can be treated with cement, lime, or replaced materials like quarry sand. An experimental study has been conducted to determine physical and mechanical characteristics of sediments dredged from dam. Then different mixtures of sediment and/or quarry sand with hydraulic binders are proposed for improving the grain size distribution of the mixes. Finally, according these mixtures, different formulations have been tested as alternative materials with dredged sediments.
The effects of heat treatments (T6 and T73) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and high cycle fatigue behavior of modified AA7075 alloys were investigated. A modified 7075 alloy was manufactured using modified-Mg (Mg-Al2Ca) instead of the conventional element Mg. Based on the microstructure, the average grain size was 4.5 ㎛ (T6) and 5.2 ㎛ (T73). Regardless of heat treatment, the modified AA7075 alloys consisted of Al matrix containing homogeneously distributed Al2CuMg and MgZn2 phases with reduced Fe-intermetallic compound. Room temperature tensile tests showed that the properties of modified 7075-T6 (Y.S.: 622MPa, T.S: 675MPa, elongation: 15.4%) were superior to those of T73 alloy (Y.S.: 492MPa, T.S: 548MPa, elongation: 12.8%). Experimental data show that the fatigue life of T6 was 400 MPa, about 64% of its yield strength. However, the fatigue life of T73 alloy was 330 MPa and 67%. Irrespective of the stress level, all crack initiation points were located on the specimen surface, and no inclusions acting as stress concentrators were seen. Superior mechanical properties and high cycle fatigue behavior of modified AA7075-T6 alloy are attributed to the fine grains and homogeneous distribution of small second phases such as MgZn2 and Al2CuMg, in addition to reduced Fe-intermetallic compounds.
In this research, numerical simulations by PFC considering discrete element method are conducted to predict experimental results of large triaxial compression test with rockfill material for dam construction. For generation of compacted assembly with specific grain size distribution and initial material porosity, the clump logic method and expansion of generated particles are adapted. To predict stress-stain behavior of large triaxial test, discrete particle modelling is applied with micro parameters which are chosen by calibration process. It is expected that distinct particle modelling method could be used as a useful tool to investigate micro and macro behavior associated with geotechnical problems and develop a numerical laboratory.

In this paper, based on evidence of coastal sediment, we show that erosion and sedimentation environments are very sensitive to sea level changes during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). We identified four sedimentary units(4.57-3.07m), which formed in the Dark Age Cool Period (DACP), MWP and LIA were classified based on the lithostratigraphy, grain size distribution, magnetic susceptibility and geochemistry of a drilling core taken from the west coast of Hwaseong City. The unconformity surfaces as boundaries of the units were also identified by the lithostratigraphy shown on the drilling core. We propoese that sedimentation was dominant in the area during the periods of sea level rise, whereas erosion prevailed during the periods of sea level fall. Particularly, extreme events, such as floods and typhoons are believed to have accelerated these processes, and we found the associated evidence in sediments of two units. This study provides an example of estimating the relative sea level variation using coastal sediments and may be useful for studying past sea level changes around the Korean Peninsula.
