  • The effect of grain crushing on the deformation of sand in 1D compression and 1D creep at high stresses was investigated theoretically and experimentally. An approach was proposed to formulate the process of grain crushing in sand in accordance with the laws of fracture mechanics and energy conservation. With this approach, the relation between the void ratio and the amount of grains crushed in 1D compression was derived. Laboratory test data were used to verify this derived relation. In addition, it was observed that there are similarities in evolution of grain size distribution in 1D compression and 1D creep tests. This implies that the changes in microstructure in sand under 1D compression and 1D creep are comparable.

  • We investgated I-V cahracteristics and relationship between microstructures and electrical properties in the specimens fabricated by seed grain method for low voltage Zn O varistor. Breaksown voltage was mainly dependent on seed grain size, and could be cntrolled to 10V/mm -15V/mm by sintering temperature and time. In non-seed grain method breakdown voltage generally agreed with final grain size, but did not always agree with it by the change of barrier phase distribution in case of the method using seed grains.

  • Morphology and grain size distribution of coastal dunes should be well documented because they are critical to dune's buffering capacity and resilience against storm surges. The nationwide coastal dune survey produced the dataset, including beach-dune topographic profiles and grain size parameters for frontal beaches, foredunes, and inland dunes. This research investigated the dataset to describe geomorphic and textural properties of coastal dunes: foredune slopes, dune heights above approximately highest high water, mean size, and sorting, together with associated variables of coastal setting that influence coastal dunes. It also explores the possibility of a dune type scheme based on gran size trends. The results are as follows. First, the coast in which dunes are developed is the primary control on foredune morphology and sediment texture. Coastal dunes on the east coast were developed more alongshore rather than inland, with gentler slopes on the higher ground and out of coarser sand. The shore aspect contributes to this pattern because the east coast cannot benefit from prevailing northwesterly. Second, grain size trends from beaches through foredunes to inland dunes were little identified. Third, 12 dune types were identified from 69 dunes, showing the indicative capability for the status of beaches and dunes. We confirmed that the dataset could increase our understanding of the overall characteristics of coastal dune morphology and texture, though there is something to be improved, for example, establishing the refined and comprehensive field survey protocol.

  • It has been reported that the size and characteristics of ferroelectric domains which have an essential role on the ferroelectric properties depend on the grain size of ferrolectric ceramics. Therefore understanding the change of domain characteristics with grain size is so important to know the dependence of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and aging on the grain size. In this research, the equilibrim domain with is calculated as d={{{{ SQRT { { 64 pi sigma a} over {3C11Ss2 } } }}. This calculated value is nearly same to the measured value of BaTiO3 and Pb(Zr0.4Ti0.6)O3 ceramics 90$^{\circ}$domain wall width. The calculated 90$^{\circ}$domain wall enerygy in Pb(Zr0.4Ti0.6)O3 which is obtained through the model is approximately 2$\times$10-2J/$m^2$.

  • Determination of grain size of heat-treated stainless steel based fm digital ultrasonic signal processing technique is presented. This techniques consist in evidence accumulation with multiple feature parameters, difference absolute mean value(DAMV), variance(VAR), mean frequency (MEANF), auto regressive model coefficient(ARC) and linear cepstrum coefficient(LCC). Feature parameters were extracted from ultrasonic echo signal of heat-treated metals. It was found that a few parameters might not be sufficient to exactly evaluate the grain size of heat-treated metals. The determination of grain size of heat-treated metals was carried out through the evidence accumulation procedure using the distances measured with reference parameters. A fuzzy mapping function is designed to transform the distances for the application of the evidence accumulation method. In the work presented, heat-treated stainless steel samples with various grain sizes are examined. The processed experimental results supports the feasibility of the grain size determination technique presented.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to present the standard deviation of the elemental normalization of concentration of selected heavy metals in the surface sediment of Lake Paldang. Methods: Grain size dependency of selected heavy metal concentrations in the surface sediments of Lake Paldang was analyzed by the extrapolation method. The heavy metal concentrations were the sum of all fractions. Results: Cd and Cu showed an increase of the coefficient of determination($r^2$) in the fractional content of particle size, from <256 ${\mu}m$ to <20 ${\mu}m$, and a decrease from <20 ${\mu}m$ to <1 ${\mu}m$. The normalized concentration of Cd and Cu by extrapolation at 50% <20 ${\mu}m$ were 0.8 mg/kg, 37.0 mg/kg, 57.6 mg/kg and 201.7 mg/kg respectively. Conclusions: The normalized concentrations in the sediment of Lake Paldang are 1.5-2.0 times higher than mean average concentration. We concluded that in interpretation of heavy metal concentration in the sediment of Lake Paldang, normalization of grain size dependency should be considered.

  • A 16Mb ITIC FeRAM device was fabricated with BLT capacitors. The average value of the switchable 2 polarization obtained m the 32k-array (unit capacitor size: 068 ${mu}m^2$) capacitors was about 16 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ at 3V and the uniformity within an 8-inch wafer was about 2.8%. But a lot of cells were failed randomly during the measuring the bit-line signal of each cell. It was revealed that the Grain size and orientation of the BLT thin film were severely non-uniform. Therefore, the uniformity of the grain size and orientation was improved by changing the process conditions of post heat treatment. The temperature of nucleation step was the very effective on varying the microstructure of the BLT thin film. The optimized temperature of the nucleation step was $560^{\circ}C$.

  • The regularity effect for printed word recognition and naming depends on ambiguities between single letters (small grain-size) and their phonemic values. As a given word is repeated and becomes more familiar, letter-aggregate size (grain-size) is predicted to increase, thereby decreasing the ambiguity between spelling pattern and phonological representation and, therefore, decreasing the regularity effect. Lexical decision and naming tasks studied the effect of repetition on the regularity effect for words. The familiarity of a word from was manipulated by presenting low and high frequency words as well as by presenting half the stimuli in mixed upper- and lowercase letters (an unfamiliar form) and half in uniform case. In lexical decision, the regularity effect was initially strong for low frequency words but became null after two presentations; in naming it was also initially strong but was merely reduced (although still substantial) after three repetitions. Mixed case words were recognized and named more slowly and tended to show stronger regularity effects. The results were consistent with the primary hypothesis that familiar word forms are read faster because they are processed at a larger grain-size, which requires fewer operations to achieve lexical selection. Results are discussed in terms of a neurobiological model of word recognition based on brain imaging studies.

  • To investigate the grain refining mechanism of Al by the addition of Ti-B, the unidirectional solidifications of 99.9%Al and 99.7%Al were performed under the condition of varing the pouring temperature. The solidification modes of Al were studied by the cooling curve analyses, metallographic and microprobe examinations. The results were as follows: 1) Grains were most refined with an addition of 0.15wt.%Ti-0.021wt.%B but the grain size with 0.2wt.%Ti-0.028wt.%B was increased. 2) The grain size of 99.7wt.%Al was even more refined than that of 99.9wt.%Al with the same amount of Ti-B. 3) As the pouring temperature increased, the grain size of pure Al and an alloy with 0.lwt.%Ti-0.014wt.%B was increased. However, an alloy with 0.2wt.%Ti-0.028wt.%B did not show any effects of temperature. 4) TiC(Al-Ti) and (Al-Ti-C) were identified as nucleants for Al.

  • Undoped barium titanate ceramic samples with high density were produced by using both high purity hydro-thermally synthesized and oxalate-derived powders. Sintering temperature was varied in the temperature range 128$0^{\circ}C$-140$0^{\circ}C$ to control the average grain sizes of the samples. Electrical breakdown test was performed at two different temperature with 3$0^{\circ}C$(below Tc) and 15$0^{\circ}C$ (above Tc) for samples immersed in silicon oil bath using 60kV dc power supply. From the experimental results at below and above Curie temperature the grain size and thickness dependence of electrical breakdown strength for BaTiO3 ceramics was presented and breakdown behavior was also studied.
