  • $SrTiO_3$ was annealed at two different annealing times (1 h and 16 h) to investigate the annealing effect on the grain size and orientation distribution. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) was used to analyze the grain size and grain orientation distributions of the $SrTiO_3$. It is possible to understand the annealing effect on the microstructure evolution, by comparing the grain size and orientation distribution of the $SrTiO_3$ as a function of annealing time.

  • Three failure theories were studied to evaluate the wood strength variation with grain slope. Maximum stress theory, Tsai-Hill theory and Hankinson formula were presented to hypothesize the failure of wood according to grain slope to loading direction. Red pine and Japanese larch were used as materials to simulate failure strength prediction with grain slope. Calculation of strength results was that the strength of wood drops rapidly between parallel to grain orientation (0 degree) and 15 degree grain orientation. The strength of wood with grain orientation were somewhat different at small grain angles among failure theories, and this tendency was due to tension and compression distinction, and shear accounting in each theories. For the above 45 degree grain orientation, the predicted failure strength of wood with grain variation were very close in each failure theories and were useful in assessing failure strength of wood. The applicable these theories should be considered that the wood has different behavior in tension and compression, and this lead to different strength at small grain angles in each theories. Furthermore, reconsideration is needed to assess the failure strength of wood at small grain angles in Hankinson formula and further studies are necessary to accounting for shear behavior at small grain angles.

  • This study presents a simple method to control the seed orientation which leads to the various growth characteristics of a single grain REBCO (RE: rare-earth elements) bulk superconductors. Seed orientation was varied systematically from c-axis to a-axis with every 30 degree rotation around b-axis. Orientations of a REBCO single grain was successfully controlled by placing the seed with various angles on the prismatic indent prepared on the surface of REBCO powder compacts. Growth pattern was changed from cubic to rectangular when the seed orientation normal to compact surface was varied from c-axis to a-axis. Macroscopic shape change has been explained by the variation of the wetting angle of un-reacted melt depending on the interface energy between $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) grain and melt. Higher magnetic levitation force was obtained for the specimen prepared using tilted seed with an angle of 30 degree rotation around b-axis.

  • The lattice strain evolution within polycrystalline solids is influenced by the crystal orientation and grain interaction. For multi-phase polycrystals, due to potential large differences in properties of each phase, lattice strains are even more strongly influenced by grain interaction compared with single phase polycrystals. In this research, the effects of the grain interaction and crystal orientation on the lattice strain evolution in a two-phase polycrystals are investigated. Duplex steel of austenite and ferrite phases with equal volume fraction is selected for the analysis, of which grain arrangement sensitivity is confirmed in the literature through both experiment and simulation (Hedstr$\ddot{o}$m et al. 2010). Analysis on the grain interaction is performed using the results obtained from the finite element calculation based on the model of restricted slip within crystallographic planes. The dependence of lattice strain on grain interactions as well as crystal orientation is confirmed and motivated the need for more in-depth analysis.

  • Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is important for monitoring the structural integrity of dissimilar metal welds (DMWs) in pressure vessels and piping in nuclear power plants. However, there is a low probability of crack detection via inspection of DMWs using ultrasonic waves because the grain structures (grain orientations) of the weld area cause distortion and splitting of ultrasonic beams propagating in anisotropic media. To overcome this issue, the grain orientation should be known, and a precise ultrasonic wave simulation technique in anisotropic media is required to model the distortion and splitting of the waves accurately. In this study, a method for nondestructive prediction of the DMW grain orientations is presented for accurate simulation of ultrasonic wave propagation behavior in the weld area. The ultrasonic wave propagation behavior in anisotropic media is simulated via finite-element analysis when ultrasonic waves propagate in a transversely isotropic material. In addition, a methodology to predict the DMW grain orientation is proposed that employs a simulation technique for ultrasonic wave propagation behavior calculation and an optimization technique. The simulated ultrasonic wave behaviors with the grain orientations predicted via the proposed method demonstrate its usefulness. Moreover, the method can be used to determine the focal law in DMWs.

  • Friction stir welding (FSW) was carried out for Al-Mg-Si series aluminum alloys which are being used for automotive body structure. Consequently, Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was applied to the friction stir welds to evaluate the effect of the paint baking process which is one of the automotive fabrication process on friction stir welded zone (FSWZ) in 443K for 1.2Ks. Grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution was measured about both the as welded specimens and the post weld heat treated specimens. An optical microscope (OM) and an field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was used for observing the grain structure and measuring its crystal orientation distribution, respectively. Changes on the grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution were not detected. From the present results, it was confirmed that the paint baking process after FSW do not affect on the grain structure and its crystal orientation distribution of FSWZ. The comprehensive investigations will be performed for various automotive aluminum alloys manufactured by different processes, in the future.

  • Single-grain (c-normal or c-parallel) and multi-grain YBCO superconductors were prepared by a melt growth process with/without seeding. The magnetic levitation force and trapped magnetic field at liquid N2 temperature (77 K) of the YBCO superconductors were investigated. Samples for the levitation force measurement were zero-field cooled (ZFC) to 77 K, and samples for trapped field measurement were field-cooled (FC) using Nd magnets. As for the magnetic levitation force, the c-normal, single grain sample showed the largest value, whereas the multi-grain sample showed the lowest value. The trapped magnetic field of the c-normal and c-parallel single-grain samples was 4-5 times that of the multi-grain sample. In addition, as the external magnetic field (the number of magnets) increased, the both properties increased proportionally. These results were explained in terms of the orientation dependence of the levitation forces and the magnetic field trapping capability of the YBCO superconductor.

  • A 16 Mb 1T1C FeRAM device was integrated with BLT capacitors. But a lot of cells were failed randomly during the measuring the bit-line signal distribution of each cell. The reason was revealed that the grain size and orientation of the BLT thin film were severely non-uniform. And the grain size and orientation were severely affected by the process conditions of post heat treatment, especially nucleation step. The optimized annealing temperature at the nucleation step was $560^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of the BLT thin film was also varied by the annealing time at the step. The longer process time showed the finer grain size. Therefore, the uniformity of the grain size and orientation could be improved by changing the process conditions of the nucleation step. The FeRAM device without random bit-fail cell was successfully fabricated with the optimized BLT capacitor and the sensing margin in bit-line signal distribution of it was about 340 mV.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the microclimate of wheat canopy, growth and yield characteristics of wheat under north-south and east-west row orientation. The variety used in this experiment was "AG South 2000", which was developed in USA. Solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, and soil temperature were monitored by data logger from March to May in 2002, The ratio of light penetration to the bottom from the upper canopy was 36.8% in north-south and 21.4% in east-west row orientation. Temporal march of light penetration to the bottom from March to May decreased as wheat developed canopy structure and decreased a little from May as plant were matured. The highest light penetration to the bottom from upper canopy occurred at 13:00 in both north-south and east-west row orientations, respectively which were 36 times in north-south and 27 times in east-west row orientation, respectively. Daily maximum temperature at the bottom of canopy occurred at 14:00 with 29 times in north-south, while 19 times were obtained at 14:00 and 15:00, respectively in east-west row orientation. Relative humidity at the bottom of the canopy in east-west yow orientation showed higher than that of north-south row orientation. Occurrence of daily maximum soil temperature of north-south showed one hour later compared with east-west yow orientation. 1000 grain weight and test weight of north-south row orientation was higher than those of east-west vow orientation. Correlation coefficient between solar radiation of upper canopy and 1000 grain weight showed r=$0.8132^{*}$, and between air temperature of upper canopy and number of spikes per $\textrm{m}^{2}$ and 1000 grain weight showed significant positive correlation with r=$0.8139^{*}$, and r=$0.8293^{*}$, respectively.
