  • Densification and grain growth behavior of MgO and -doped alumina ceramics were investigated. MgO was found to inhibit grain growth and to promote densification, but acted to promote grain growth more than densification. The density which showed the maximum shrinkage rate was investigated in the plot of shrinkage rate versus density. The data suggests that the maximum shrinkage rate separates the two kinetic regimes, below the density of maximum shrinkage, the regime associated with densification and above the maxima, the regime associated with the grain growth. The plot exhibits a maximum which shifts to higher temperatures with MgO doping and to lower with doping.

  • Calcium-hexaluminate phase $(CA_6)$ is known to be effective for the crack shielding due to the spinel block crystal structure. In this study, we focused to the control of $CA_6$ morphology for good damage tolerance behavior in alumina and zirconia/calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ composites. Calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ composites were prepared from zirconia, alumina and calcium carbornate powders. Calcium-hexaluminate $(CA_6)$ phase was obtained by the solid reaction through the formation of intermediate phase $(CA_2)$. $CA_6$ phase showed the column type abnormal grain grown behavior composed of small blocks. Due to the typical microstructure of $CA_6$, alumina and zirconia/calcium-hexaluminate composites provide a well controlled crack propagation behavior.

  • Role of Ca in grain growth behavior has been investigated in hot-rolled Al-3%Mg and Al-3%Mg-0.5%Ca wrought alloys. When annealed for 1 hr from 723 to 823 K, grain size of the Al-3%Mg alloy increased rapidly above 723 K, whereas grains were relatively stable up to 773 K for the Ca-containing alloy. Grain homogeneity of the Ca-containing alloy was better than that of the Ca-free alloy both in hot-rolled and annealed states. Calculated activation energies for grain growth were 77.6 and 85.9 kJ/mole in the range of 723 to 823 K for the alloys with 0 and 0.5%Ca, respectively. Taking SEM images and EDS results into account, enhanced thermal stability in response to Ca addition would be associated with Al4Ca compounds located along the grain boundaries, which eventually play a role in restricting grain growth at elevated temperatures.

  • Densification behavior and grain growth of tool steel powder compacts during pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot isostatic pressing were investigated. Experimental data were compared with results of finite element calculations by using the constitutive model of Abouaf and co-workers and that of McMeeking and co-workers. Densification and deformation of tool steel powder compacts were studied by implementing power-law creep, diffusional creep, and grain growth into the finite element analysis. The shape change of a powder compact in the container during hot isostatic pressing was also studied. The theoretical models did not agree well with experimental data in sinter forging, however, agreed well with experimental data in hot isostatic pressing.

  • This study presents that the orientation and the geometry of seed affect on the growth behavior of melt processed single grain REBCO bulk superconductor and its magnetic properties. The effects of seed geometry have been investigated for thin $30mm{\times}30mm$ rectangular powder compacts. Single grain REBCO bulk superconductors have been grown successfully by a top seed melt growth method for 8-mm thick vertical thin REBCO slab. Asymmetric structures have been developed at the front surface and at the rear surface of the specimen. Higher magnetic properties have been obtained for the specimen that c-axis is normal to the specimen surface. The relationships between microstructure, grain growth and magnetic properties have been discussed.

  • Growth behavior and kinetics of grains in a liquid matrix has been studied by computer simulation for various physical and processing conditions. The kinetics of growing and dissolving grains were considered to follow those of single crystals in a matrix. Depending on the shape of crystals, rounded or faceted, different kinetic equations were adopted for growing grains and an identical equation for dissolving grains. Effects of such critical parameters as step free energy, temperature, and liquid volume fraction were evaluated.

  • When a SnO$_2$ thin film was deposited by thermal CVD, two different types of growth behavior that were dependent on the deposition temperature were observed. The film grown at 475$^{\circ}C$ had a wide grain size distribution and a faceted surface shape. On the other hand, the film grown at 5$25^{\circ}C$ had a relatively narrow grain size distribution and a rounded sulfate shape. The aspects of grain shape and growth behavior agree well with the theory of gram growth and a roughening transition. The charge tarrier density decreased with deposition time. According to photoluminescence measurements, the peak intensity of the spectra occurred at approximately 2.5 eV, which is related to oxygen vacancies, and decreased with increasing of deposition time. These measurement results suggest that the number of oxygen vacancies, which is related to the electrical conductivity, decrease with deposition time.

  • Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out using high manganese cast steel under constant amplitude loading. Crystal grain size of the material is about 1000$\mu\textrm{m}$. For this material, the fatigue crack growth mechanism of high manganese steel was clarified from results such as observation of crack growth path and fracture surface. $\Delta$$K_{th}$ is about 8MPa$\surd$m which is quiet large as compared to the general structural steels and the crack growth rate is lower than the general structural steels especilly in the low $\Delta$K regsion. The reason of this behavior is crack closure due to fracture surface roughness.

  • On poly and single crystalline Cu substrates, the graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). Optical microscopic images which were not possible to show the detailed characterization of graphene growth were adjusted and analyzed using image analyzing software. As a result it was possible to show the detailed growth mechanism of graphene by utilizing the image analysis. Nucleation of graphene on Cu grain boundary and its growth behavior into Cu grain are shown. In addition, the movement of graphene grain boundary interacting with Cu grain boundary and pinholes during growth was illustrated in detail, and the cause and result are discussed as a result of those interactions.
