  • Rice is 34% of the world's population used as a staple food. But the world population is increasing. Food security is not well protected. Improving cultivar development can address food security. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping is a statistical analysis using both phenotypic and genotypic dates. The purpose of QTL mapping is to determine a gene. Increasing grain size is a way to increase yield in rice. Grain size-related genes were mapped using CNDH population obtained by cross-breeding Cheongcheong (Indica) and Nagdong (Japonica) through anther culture. Grain harvested from experimental field of Kyungpook National University in Gunwi in 2021. Genes related to grain length were detected between RM5964-RM12285, RM20924-RM20967 in chromosome 1, 7. LOD score is 5.88 and 5.6. Genes related to grain width was detected between RM289-RM18130 in chromosome 5. LOD score is 4.57. Genes related to grain length/width ratio were detected between RM5459-RM3482, RM5699-RM1211 and RM3838-RM3381 in chromosome 1, 2, 5. LOD score is 3.75, 3.14 and 3.41. 4 genes was detected in chromosome 1 and 2 genes was detected in chromosome 2 and 7 genes was detected in chromosome 5. 2 genes related to grain shape and quality were detected. 4 genes related to grain length were detected. 4 genes related to grain size were detected. 1 gene related to grain size and weight was detected. 2 genes related to grain length and weight were detected. By finding the gene related to grain size, it provides food to people threatened by food security and solves the food shortage.

  • Molecular Dynamics(MD) method was used to investigate the change of friction force due to interaction between dislocations and a grain boundary when a Ni tip was scratched on a Cu bicrystal. The substrate comprised a Cu bicrystal containing a vertical$\Sigma=5(210)$ grain boundary. The moving tip for scratching simulation was consisted of fixed Ni atoms emulating a rigid tip. The indentation depth was $3.6\AA$ and the scratching was performed along <110>direction in the first grain. As the scratching was continued, nucleation and propagation of dislocations were observed. In the early stage, the grain boundary played as a barrier to moving dislocations and interrupting further dislocation movement with no dislocation resulting in no propagation across the grain boundary. As the Ni tip approached the grain boundary, dislocations were nucleated at the grain boundary and propagated to the second grain. However, stick-slip phenomena that were observed on a single crystal scratching were not observed in the bicrystal. And, instead, irregular oscillation of friction force was observed during the scratching due to the presence of a grain boundary.

  • In the coarse grain HAZ adjacent to the fusion line, most of the TiN particles in conventional Ti added steel are dissolved and austenite grain growth is easily occupied during welding process. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particle is improved by increasing the nitrogen content in steel. In this study, the effect of high nitrogen TiN particle on preventing austenite grain growth in HAZ was investigated. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing the austenite grain growth by pinning effect. High nitrogen TiN particle in simulated HAZ were not dissolved even at high temperature such as 1400 C and prevented the austenite grain growth in simulated HAZ. Owing to small austenite grain size in HAZ the width of coarse grain HAZ in high nitrogen TiN steel was decreased to 1/10 of conventional TiN steel. Even high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grain HAZ consisted of fine polygonal ferrite and pearlite and toughness of coarse grain HAZ was significantly improved.

  • Two rice varieties, 'Oochikara' with large grain and 'Hwayeongbyeo' and their progenies (F$_1$, F$_2$, B$_1$ and B$_2$) were tested to understand gene action of morphological traits of rice grain and their relationships. The evaluated traits were 1,000-grain weight, grain length, width, thickness, length-width ratio and chalkiness of brown rice. Correlation between grain weight and chalkiness was highly significant in the all progenies, and grain length were not associated with width and thickness in an F$_2$ population. Scaling test and jonit scaling test revealed that inheritance of grain traits were fitted to additive-dominance model without epistasis. Additive effects for the traits were much greater than the dominance effects.

  • Purpose - The object of this paper is to ascertain how Japan has become a powerful trader in the international grain market. A case in point is the world's third largest U.S. major grain trader, Gavilon, merged with general trading company Marubeni in 2012. What are Japan's strategies and their implications? Research design, data, and methodology - The study analyzed Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries data, and data from daily and weekly papers. The paper employed various data and research methodologies. Results - The Lee Myeong-Bak government tried for three years to create a company similar to Cargill, but the project eventually failed. On the other hand, Japan has emerged as a leader in the international grain distribution market for the past 50 years, with the cooperation of government and private companies. Conclusion - The findings of this study show that Korea, China, India, and other countries' international major grain companies now compete to be powerful, major grain traders. South Korea could be the leader of the international grain market through the development of a more careful and long-term strategy.

  • Milli-structure components are classified as a component group whose size is between macro and micro scales, that is, about less than 20mm and larger than 1mm. The bending of these components of thin sheets has a typical phenomenon of bulk deformation because of the forming size. The recent trend towards miniaturization causes an increased demand for parts with very small dimensions. The conceptual miniature bending process enables the production of such parts with high productivity and accuracy. The stress values of the flow curve decrease with miniaturization, which means that coarse grained materials show a higher resistance against deformation, when the grain size is in the range of the sheet thickness. In this paper, a new numerical approach is proposed to simulate intergranular milli-structure in forming by the finite element method. The grain element and grain boundary element are introduced to simulate the milli-structure of strip in the bending. The grain element is used to analyze the deformation of individual grain while the grain boundary element is for the investigation on the movement of the grain boundary. Also, the result of the finite element analysis is confirmed by a series of milli-sized forming experiments.

  • The grain growth behavior of $0.95Na_{1/2}Bi_{1/2}TiO_{3}-0.05BaTiO_{3}$ (NBT-5BT) has been investigated with respect to the grain shape. The powder compacts of NBT-5BT were sintered at 1200 for various times. The corresponding equilibrium shape was a round-edged cube with flat {100}-faces. Abnormal grains were not observed in the specimens sintered for 1 to 12 h but abnormal grains appeared when sintered for 24 h. Before the formation of abnormal grains, a valley was observed in the measured grain size distribution of NBT-5BT, showing that the grain size distribution was a combination of two unimodal distributions. The present result suggests that the grain growth in NBT-5BT was governed by the growth of facet planes which would occur via 2-dimansional nucleation and growth.

  • This study was carried out to select randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers associated with grain weight of a large-grain mutant, Hyacp 39-26-1, derived from anther culture of a rice cultivar, 'Hwayeongbyeo'. The segregation mode for grain weight in an F$_2$ population from a cross, 'Hwayeongbyeo/Hyacp 39-26-1', showed a nearly normal distribution. One hundred and ninety-one F$_2$plants ranged from 21.8 g to 34.7 g in 1,000-grain weight with a mean of 26.8 g. Five hundred and twenty primers were used to detect the RAPD markers associated with the grain weight of the large-grain mutant. Of these primers, 54 primers showed polymorphism between 'Hwayeongbyeo' and 'Hyacp 39-26-1'. Four RAPD markers (OPB18, OPH07, OPT20, and OPX20) were significantly related to the grain weight of twenty one F$_3$ lines derived from the cross, 'Hwayeongbyeo/Hyacp 39-26-1'. This RAPD marker could facilitate the early and efficient selection of high-yield lines through improvement of grain weight in rice.

  • In the midst of the advancement of global economic trade restrictions, the internationalization of domestic agriculture, which has occurred at a time of crisis in the industry, has presented an opportunity for Korea's agricultural products to be exported overseas. In particular, from 2015, after favorable outlooks for Korean rice, it is expected that the domestic agricultural industry is in a strong position to play a major role in export markets. Due to this, among existing measures targeting the import of rice, increasing domestic measures to boost rice exports and establish an effective operating plan are being pursued. However, until now, appropriate measures targeting domestic rice markets have not been found. In addition, domestic grain piers, which are currently used exclusively for the import of grain, do not have sufficient capacity to handle export operations. Therefore this paper will examine the current status of domestic grain piers, and will suggest a operating plan in grain terminal for the export of grain in order to successfully bring domestically produced rice to foreign markets. The conclusions drawn from this paper are designed to be used as a basic application for the operational plan of grain piers for the purpose of increasing domestic rice exports.

  • In a shipyard, computer calculation is not frequently used for the grain stability calculation because of large difference between calculation values and real values. Therefore, the necessary calculation process for grain stability is done manually. GUI(Graphical User Interface) is adopted for the convenience of users and interactive data I/O. The hold shape (girder, hold, etc.)needed for calculation are visualized using GLBAX which is a 3 dimensional graphic library. The interface with the ship basic calculation package is also implemented. The aim of this paper is to develop a reliable interactive grain stability calculation program which reduces computational time, and is to computerize the grain stability calculation procedure.
