The sulfonated ion exchange fibers were synthesized by $Co^{60}\;{\gamma}-ray$ radiation-induced graft copolymerization. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the total dose. The degree of grafting for POF-g-St/DVB copolymer was 1000%. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated ion exchange fibers were increased by increasing the degree of sulfonation. Its maximum value was 5.06 meq/g. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated POF- co-St/DVB ion exchange fiber was higher than that of the sulfonated POF- co-styrene ion exchange fibers. The amount of adsorption for heavy metals were also increased with increase in the degree of grafting of the ion exchange fibers.

We prepared hydrophilic porous supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane by radiation grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and hydrophilic sodium allylsulfonate (SAS) into a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) supporter. The physicochemical properties of the supporters prepared under various reaction conditions such as molar ratio of SAS/AN, monomer concentration, and irradiation dose were evaluated. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of SAS/AN copolymer chains into the porous PTFE. The pores of the porous PTFE film were found to be decreased with an increase in the degree of grafting by using FE-SEM and gurley number. Furthermore, by analyzing the degree of grafting, contact angle, and TBO (toluidine blue O) uptake, the hydrophilicity of the prepared supporters was found to increase with an increase in the degree of grafting.
In this study, we have investigated the influence of the nature of solvent on the grafting reaction of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene wax obtained as a by-product in a high density polyethylene plant. The results show that the grafting ratio in xylene as a solvent was higher than toluene. This is because xylene has excellent monomer solubility, swelling property and miscibility. It has been also observed that grafting degree shows an initial jump in percentage of grafting with increasing amount of solvent, from 0% v/w to 200% v/w giving maximum grafting in 200% v/w and then slightly decreases on further increase in the amount of solvent and becomes almost constant. It can be also seen that gel content was not formed under the use of solvent. It means that solvent prevented cross-linking reaction due to chain transfer reactions to solvent molecules. Studies of melt viscosity at $140^{\circ}C$ showed that viscosity increased after grafting of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene wax.
Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were grafted with acrylic acid by a preirradiation method by using electron beam accelerator. The effect of irradiation dose, storage time, concentration of acrylic acid, reaction temperature, reaction time and Mohr's salt concentration on the degree of grafting were investigated in detail. The grafted Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were characterized using IR spectroscopy and SEM. The results showed that the degree of grafting increased with increasing absorbed dose and the Mohr's salt in the acrylic acid solution promoted grafting efficiency.
In this study, Polyethylene wax, which was produced in manufacturing process of high density polyethylene was grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH). The influences of reaction parameters on the graft polymerization as well as the effect of hydrolysis of the anhydride functions were investigated. The results show that the grafting degree increased and conversion of maleic anhydride decreased with an increase in MAH monomer content. This means the highest grafting efficiency for the reaction can be met when MAH monomer content is about 15 wt%. DCP (dicumyl peroxide) and DTBP (di-tert-butyl peroxide) have been used as the initiator and the highest yield of grafting was obtained when the initiator content is about 0.5 wt%. However, It can be seen that the gel content values of this polyethylene wax grafted MAH were below 2%. It was also observed that the grafting degree increased with an increase in reaction temperature and the maximum value was reached 2 hours later. Although MAH functions grafted onto polyethylene wax were mainly in the carboxylic acid forms, some anhydride form of MAH appeared in over 5% of grafting degree. As a result of hydrolysis reaction, it was observed that the conversion of anhydride group into carboxylic acid group was reached up to 10%.
Fabric ion-exchanger, aminated PP-g-styrene was synthesized with styrene monomer onto PP staple fiber by pre-irradiational grafting with E-beam and subsequent chloromethylation and amination. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the styrene monomer concentration and the highest degree of grafting was obtained 118% at a monomer concentration of 80% styrene. Optimum condition of Mohr's salt and sulphuric acid were 1.0 ${\times}\;10^{-3}$ M and 0.1 M. Amount of amination was increased with increasing degree of grafting. Swelling ratio of aminated PP-g styrene was higher than that of trunk polymer. Ion-exchange capacity was 6.7 meq/g, which was three times greater than commercial ion-exchanger. Optimum condition of baron ion adsorption was pH 4 and amount of adsorption were increased with increasing the amount of amination.
This study was carried out to convert the hydrophobic characteristics of PVDF to hydrophilic. Poly(-vinylidene fluorine) (PVDF) was grafted by electron beam irradiation and sulfonated. The grafting degree of modified PVDF increased with the monomer concentration, but not the conversion degree. From the results of FTIR and XPS, it was shown that the amount of converted sulfur increased with the grafting degree. The radiation-induced graft polymerization led to decrease fluorine from 35.7% to 21.3%. Meanwhile, the oxygen and sulfur content increased up to 8.1% and 3.2%. The pore size of modified membranes was shrunken and the roughness sharply decreased after irradiation. The ion exchange capacity and contact angle were investigated to show the characteristics of PVDF. The enhanced ion exchange capacity and lower contact angle of modified PVDF showed that the hydrophilicity played a role in determining membrane fouling. Electron beam irradiation successfully modified the hydrophobic characteristics of PVDF to hydrophilic.
We synthesized HPP-g-GMA copolymer using pre-irradiation method by E-beam and aminated HPP-g-GMA using amination reaction. Degree of grafting increased with increasing GMA monomer concentration and showed the maximum value of 130% at 1.46 M of GMA. The degree of amination increased with increasing the degree of grafting. When the degree of grafting was 100%, degree of amination showed the maximum value of 37.4%. The ion exchange capacity of aminated HPP-g-GMA was about 3.78 meq/g, and it showed remarkable adsorption ability of hollow fiber ion exchanger. Through the BET analysis, the surface area of aminated HPP-g-GMA was 54.83 $\m^2/g$ and the mean pore size was $26\AA$. These showed the decrease of surface area and the slight increase of the mean pore size. SEM results show that the thickness of fiber increased after the step of reaction and there pore blocking phenomena was not observed. The aminated HPP-g-GMA was synthesized successfully and found to be suitable for the adsorption and separation of anion.
In this study, the distribution behaviors of the polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) grafting polymer across the FEP-g-PSSA membranes prepared by a simultaneous irradiation method, were investigated by analyzing the cross-section of the membranes with a SEM-EDX instrument. The effects of irradiation conditions such as the degree of grafting, FEP film thickness, and grafting solvent on the distribution of the grafting polymer were mainly studied in this experiment. The results indicate that to obtain the evenly grafted FEP-g-PSSA membranes, the higher degree of grafting is required as the film thickness increases, and the lower dose rate are more effective than the higher dose rate at the given dose.

Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was used to introduce epoxy groups on the surface of polypropylene (PP) plate, used as a substrate, through plasma-induced graft copolymerization. Emulsion polymerization was applied for graft copolymerization of GMA and was compared with conventional solution polymerization to confirm its effect. Plasma treatment conditions under one atmospheric pressure were fixed as follows; the RF power of 200 W, the treatment time of 30 sec, the Ar gas flow rate of 6 LPM, and the exposure time of treated PP samples in air of 5 min. For graft-copolymerization, GMA concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time was optimized to maximize the grafting degree of GMA. The maximum grafting degree of GMA was obtained at the condition of 12%-GMA concentration, $90^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature, and 5 hr-reaction time. Analysis results supported that the emulsion polymerization was more effective than the solution polymerization for grafting more GMAs on the surface of PP plate under the same reaction conditions.
