  • The grafting of butyl methacrylate onto gelatin was investigated by potassium persulfate(KPS) redox system in aqueous solution. The optimum conditions of grafting were observed, and the physical property and the biocolnpatibility of graft copolymer membrane were examined. The gas permeability and the biodegradation by bacteria were decreased with the grafting percentage increased, and tensile strength increased with the grafting percentage increased.

  • The radical initiated graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile(AN) and 4-chlorostyrene(4-Clst) onto ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) rubber was investigated under various conditions. Graft copolymer(AU-EPDM-4-Clst) was isolated b: selective solvent extraction and identified by using IR spectroscopy. The percent grafting is determined as a function of solvent, reaction time, and monomer mole ratio. Percent grafting decreased in the order of tetrahydrofuran(THF)>THF/ethyl acetate(EA)(1 : 1)>cyclohexane/EA(1 : 1)>n-hexane/EA(1 : 1). Grafting increased continuously with increasing the reaction time up to 40 hr, beyond which the grafting levelled off. It was observed that percent grafting increased as increasing [4-Clst]/[AN] mole ratio, but decreased when [4-Clst]/[AN] mole ratio was higher than 1.60. The light resistance of graft copolymer(AN-EPDM-4-Clst) was better than that of ABS.

  • The crystallization behavior of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) /ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (E-MeA-GMA) blend was studied. The extent of reaction and the reaction rate between PET and E-MeA-GMA were measured with torque rheometer, FT-IR and SEM. The effects of the grafting reaction on the crystallization behavior were investigated with DSC and time-resolved light scattering (TR-LS) techniques. The morphological change at the lamellar level was also examined by using a small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method.

  • With the incorporation of hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) and NaLS as an initiator and emulsifier, acrylic acid monomer was graft copolymerized with sodium alginate prepared from alginic acid, and then the grafted copolymer was confirmed through IR spectrometer. When the amounts of acrylic acid increased the grafting also showed increasing trend. While the contents of hydrogen peroxide was varied in the aqueous sodium alginate solution, the grafting efficiency decreased gradually as the amounts of initiator increased.

  • The multifunctional cation exchangers, sulfonated polypropylene-g-(acrylic acid/styrene) [PP-g-(AAc/Sty)] were synthesized by the irradiational grafting of AAc and Sty onto PP staple fabric with electron beam accelerator and its subsequent sulfonation. The highest degree of grafting obtained was 190% at a monomer mixture of 30 vol% AAc: 70 vol% Sty and a solvent mixture of 30 vol% water : 70 vol% methanol and the degree of grafting decreased with an increase of the AAc content in the monomer mixture at constant solvent content. Maximum ion exchange capacity of the copolymer was 4.6 meq/g. The Li$^{+}$ adsorption ability of the copolymer synthesized in the study was the best among PP-g- AAc, sulfonated PP-g-Sty, and sulfonated PP-g-(AAc/Sty).).

  • New graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting 2,2,2-trifluoroethylmethacrylate on polyvinylalcohol in aqueous solution with $Ce^{4+}$ ions as initiator. Surface free energies of copolymers having various grafting percentages were studied by measurements of contact angles for various liquids. As the grafting of perfluoroalkyl group increases, surface free energy of solid decreases. Estimation of critical surface free energy should be accounted for molecular properties because the polar force components of these solids are relatively great. ${\gamma}_c$ was calculated from the plot of ${\gamma}_{si}$ vs ${\Phi}_{sl}$.

  • It has been studied the graft copolymerization of glycidyl-methacrylate monomer containing two functional groups (vinyl- & epoxyl-) to chloroprene rubber. The reaction occured in the manner of chain transfer mechanism was carried out by means of solution polymerization in toluene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as the radical initiator. The graft copolymer obtained from this work was analyzed by using IR spectrum, and the physical properties of the polymer such as the thermal behavior were also studied according to TG-DTA methods, and the potency of adhesiveness for the purpose of commercial application was investigated. Experimental results for the graft copolymerization are summarized as follows. 1) A small amount of initiator (0.5%) and 50% of monomer showed the best result for the grafting of monomer to the polymer chain of rubber while the 15% of rubber solution was found to be most suitable to raise either for the grafting ratio or the polymerization ratio. 2) Optimum temperature for better yield of graft copolymer was proved to he at $75^{\circ}C\sim80^{\circ}C$ while those of reaction time was to be $1\sim2$ hours.

  • Copolymer consisted of MMA and tBMA was synthesized by radical polymerization and poly(MMA-co-MA) was prepared by selective hydrolysis of tert-butyl group. The obtained polymer was coupled with epoxy functionalized PEO of various molecular weight to synthesize poly(MMA-co-PEGMA) with different side chain length. The AC-impedance measurement shows $1.88{\times}10^{-6}Scm^{-1}$ of room temperature ionic conductivity from 48mol% of MMA while $5.11{\times}10^{-8}Scm^{-1}$ was observed in 82mol% sample. In addition, there was an effect of PEGMA molecular weight on ionic conductivity possibly due to the steric hindrance in grafting-onto coupling reaction. Finally, the polymer electrolytes shows electrochemical stability up to 6V at room temperature.

  • Polycaprolactone (PCL) was blended with corn starch to produce biodegradable compost films and the biodegradability and mechanical properties were investigated. As the compatibilizer for the immiscible PCL/starch blend, 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-PCL macromer was grafted onto starch by initially grafting HEMA to starch and then grafting of PCL onto HEMA via ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone. When biodegradability of the PCL grafted starch-g-DEMA copolymers was compared with that of starch by the modified Sturm test, graft copolymers degraded at much slower rates due to the presence of the non-degradable HEMA. With the addition of the graft copolymer up to 5 wt% to the blend, the elongation-at-break of the starch/PCL blend increased substantially, while the tensile strength and modulus did not change much. SEM observation of the blend containing 2 wt% copolymer clearly indicated that the interfacial adhesion between the starch and PCL was strengthened by the copolymer.

  • The graft copolymerization of chloroprene rubber with methyl methacrylate in toluene solution has been carried out varying the concentration of monomer, initiator, CR, reaction time, and reaction temperature, etc.. It is observed that the grafting reaction follows conventional kinetic behavior under the present experimental conditions. Identification of grafting on to chloroprene rubber was obtained through characterization of the graft copolymer by infrared spectrometer.
