  • Aerodynamic characteristics of three-dimensional wings in ground effect for Aero-levitation Electric Vehicle(AEV) are numerically investigated for various fairing shapes at the junctions of 3D Wings. Numerical results show that a sizeable three-dimensional comer flow separation occurs with formation of an arch vortex at the junction of main and vertical wings, and also that this is predicted the main cause of the high lift-to-drag(L/D) reduction rate of the main wing. To avoid the comer flow separation, the main idea of this study is to reduce the cross section gradient of the comer flow tube near the trailing edge for various fairing shapes. Improvements on L/D ratios of the wings are pursued by breaking the coherence of superimposed adverse pressure gradients at the wing junction when the cross section gradient is changed slowly at the trailing edge.

  • A thermal-hydraulic code, named CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components. A two-fluid three-field model was used for steam-water two-phase flows. To obtain numerical solutions, the finite volume method was applied over unstructured cell-centered meshes. In steam-water two-phase flows, a phase change, i.e., evaporation of condensation, results in a great change in the flow field because of substantial density difference between liquid and vapor phases. Thus, two-phase flows are very sensitive to the local pressure that determines the phase change. This in turn puts emphasis on the accurate evaluation of local pressure gradient. This paper presents a new numerical scheme to evaluate the pressure gradient at cell centers on unstructured meshes. The results of the new scheme for a simple test function a gravity-driven cavity, and a wall boiling two-phase flow are compared with those of the previous schemes in the cupid code.

  • Let X be a 4-manifold obtained by gluing two symplectic 4-manifolds Xi, i = 1, 2, along embedded surfaces. Using the gradient flow of a functional on 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten theory along the cylindrical end, we study the Seiberg-Witten equations on X and have a product formula of Seiberg-Witten invariants on X from the ones on Xi, i = 1, 2.

  • GVF can solve two difficulties with Snakes that are on setting initial contour and have a hard time processing into boundary concavities. But GVF takes much longer computation time than the existing Snakes because of their edge map and partial derivatives. Therefore this paper analyzed the computation time between GVF and Snakes. As a simulation result, both algorithms took almost similar computation time in simple image. In real images, GVF took about two times computation than Snakes.

  • The unsteady Hartmann flow of an electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel non-conducting porous plates is studied with heat transfer taking the Hall effect into consideration. An external uniform magnetic field and a uniform suction and injection are applied perpendicular to the plates while the fluid motion is subjected to an exponential decaying pressure gradient. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of the ion slip and the uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is examined.

  • As pipelines are often used to transport gas, oil, water and oil products, there are more than one pipeline installed in the offshore field. The size and space of pipelines are various depending on the design specifications. The pipelines are to be designed and installed to secure the stability to external loads during the installation and operation period. The flow patterns are very complex around the pipelines being dependent on incoming flow velocity, pipelines size and space. To investigate the flow patterns, number of experiment are conducted with visualization equipment in a circulating water channel. The flow motion and trajectory were recorded from the laser reflected particles by camera. From the experiment the flow patterns around spaced pipelines were obtained. Also pressure gradient was measured by mano-meter to estimate the hydrodynamic forces on the behind pipeline. The results show that the various sizes and spaces can be affected in the estimation of external load. The complex flow patterns and pressure gradients can be effectively used in the understanding of flow motion and pressure gradient.

  • Costal regions in Korea often suffer severe damages due to wave-induced disasters, storm surge disasters and so on. therefore, many engineers and researchers have devoted their energy to prevent these costal disasters. The development of artificial reefs including sunken vessels is one of their remarkable achievements and various kind of these artificial upwelling structures have been designed and applied. However, the flow characteristics around a Tetrapod under the water has not been investigated experimentally. So in this article, in uniform flow of circulating water channel and some different velocities, PIV measurement has been conducted on the flow characteristics behind a Tetrapod. The results were analyzed on the flow characteristics of both cases of a Tetrapod. Therefore, it can be concluded that the both cases have its own distinctive flow characteristics behind the bluff body; Case A has an steep upstream flow pattern. On the contrary, Case B has an developed downstream flow pattern in the near wake of the Tetrapod. The velocity gradient at position x=150mm of Case-A appears gently up and down But, the velocity gradient at the same position of Case-B appears better highly up and down.

  • Three-dimensional flow characteristics within a high-acceleration first-stage turbine vane passage has been investigated in a newly-built vane cascade for propulsion. The result shows that there is a strong favorable pressure gradient on the vane pressure surface. On its suction surface, however, there exists not only a much stronger favorable pressure gradient than that on the pressure surface upstream of the mid-chord but also a subsequent adverse pressure gradient downstream of it. By employing two different oil-film methods with upstream coating and full-coverage coating, a four-vortex model horseshoe vortex system can be identified ahead of each leading edge in the cascade, and the separation line of inlet boundary layer flow as well as the separation line of re-attached flow is provided as well. In addition, basic flow data such as secondary flow, aerodynamic loss, and flow turning angle downstream of the cascade are obtained.
