  • Generally, the same quality tobacco may give similar concentration of each chemical component. This research investigation was studied to obtain the differences in concentrations of volatile oil compounds in physically similar tobacco produced in different environment and managements-in Korea and in the United States. The flue-cured leaf tobacco produced in Korea and America was regraded to B3L and P3L by American grading system and analyzed for volatile oils relating to tobacco flavor and aroma. Sixty compounds of the more than 100 peaks distinguishable on the total neutral volatile oils were identified by G5-MS and quantified. Their concentrations are compared between B3 L and P3L produced in Korea and in the United States. The most volatile oil concentrations of B3 L and P3L grade tobacco arc higher in American than in Korean. Only a few components such as benzaldehyde, pulegonc, 4, 6, 9 - megastigmatriene - 3 - one, and coumaran are less in American.

  • Flue-cured tobaccos(cv. NC82, grade AB3O-1) expanded by super steam, volatile organic solvents(tricuorofluoromethane, propane), carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and by freeze-drying were examined for their physico-chemical properties. The expanding rate by using the organic solvents or carbon dioxide at the impregnated pressure was 70% or more, whereas the rate by super steam and freeze-drying was 49.4 and 42.9%, respectively. The contents of total sugar, alkaloid and ether extracts of the expanded tobacco by organic solvents or carbondioxide were decreased to 27.6, 20% or more, and 13%, respectively, when compared to non-expanded one. The contents of citric acid of the tobacco expanded by using trichlorofluoromethane and carbon dioxide were increased to 19.1, 14.0%, respectively. Linoleic acid in the tobacco expanded by super steam or trichlorofluoromethane was also increased to 17.3%, but malonic acid in the tobacco expanded by super steam was 18.5% less than that in the non-expanded one. Nineteen essential oil among 22 assayed in this experiment were decreased in the expanded tobaccos. Key words : expanding method, tobacco, physico-chemical properties.

  • The nitrogen contents of some forms in Burley tobacco leaf cultivated in Yaesan, Mokpo and Namwon district were investigated. The rate of each form in total nitrogen contents were as follows ; Protein form nitrogen 30~33 % Nitrate form nitrogen 10~123% Alkaloid form nitrogen 8~16 % Ammonia form nitrogen 6~9% Amide form nitrogen 2~ 3% Other form nitrogen 26~44 % The order of nitrate form nitrogen content on the nitrogen of each tobacco cultivated in three area was Yaesan > Namwon > Mokpo, but that of alkaloid form nitrogen was reverse order of nitrate form nitrogen. As for Quality ( grade ), the orders of alkaloid and ammonia form nitrogen content on total nitrogen were H5> 3> 1> L 1> 3> 5, but that of nitrate form nitrogen was reversed.

  • In flue-cured tobacco, the relationships between the quality of tobacco leaves (productivity according to quality grade) and specific meteorological factors were noted showing different significances according to different seasons during the growing period of the tobacco plants. The thick leaf high quality was significantly correlated with average temperature in late April, late May, early July and late July. The degree of contribution was greatest in middle May and lowest in late May. In the highest and lowest temperatures, the relations to leaf quality had similar tendency like in the average temperature; the thick leaf low quality showed opposite tendency relative to the high quality in the degrees of correlations and contributions. Amount of precipitation was significantly correlated with the thick leaf high quality in late April, early May, middle May, late June and late July. The degree of positive contribution was shown in order of late April, middle July and early July, and that of negative one was in order of middle June, early June and late June, respectively. Duration of sunshine period was highly associated with thick leaf high quality of tobacco leaves in all of the growing season except for middle April and middle July. The degree of positive contribution was in order of late May, late April, early July and middle July, and that of the negative one was in order of late June, early May, middle June and middle May.

  • Seasonal climatic factors associated with tobacco quality grade and production rate were analyzed. The degree of influence on yield distribution rate in high guality tobacco leaues was highly positive with the average temperature in early May, but negatively related to those in late May and early June. Positive correlations were noticed between the degree of influence and sunshine hours in Middle June, late June and late May in decrease order, while negative degree of influence was higher in early May than in late May, The order influenced by recipitation in a positive direction was early May, late May and middle May. Negative influence was noticed in middle and early June with a great degree.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of aboveground plants and red ginseng of polystem ginseng in 6 years of age having two or more stems in a plant. Total leaf weight and area of polystem ginseng were larger, while its stem diameter, and the leaf weight and area of the biggest stem in each plant were decreased with increase the stem numbers in a plant. The ratio of shoot weight to root weight in the polystem ginseng with three or more stems was higher than that in the monostem ginseng and the polystem ginseng with two stems, In ginseng plants with no more than 2 stems, there were positive correlations between root weight and total leaf weight, and leaf area, but not between leaf weight and area of the biggest stem. Inner cavity and inner white, limiting factors for redginseng quality grade, occurred more in tri-stem ginseng than mono- and di-stem one. Percentages of Heaven (1st grade) and Earth (2nd grade) red ginseng in tri-stem ginseng were decreased compared with mono stem and di-stem ginseng.

  • Some climatic factors and quality-ralated chemical properties were compared among conventional late and early transplanting in Korea, and conventional growing in Greece where climate for tobacco growth and quality is quite different from Korea. Precipitations were lowest and sunshine hours were highest for greece planting. Rainfall was 40% or less and the number of sunshine hours was higher by 20% or more in early transplanting than in conventional late planting during the period from 30 days to 80 days after transplanting in Korea. The content of total nitrogen, nicotine, petroleum ether extracts of leaves were much higher in Greece planting than those in Korea planting. The content of volatile organic acids and volatile neutrals were highest with Greece culture, followed by early and late transplanting in Korea. The leaf quality evaluated by price showed the same trends. Ash content and pH level of leaves were considerably lower in early transplanting than late planting. Petroleum ether extracts, volatile organic acids and total nitrogen showed significant positive correlation coefficients with assigned grade price, while ash content showed significant negative correlation coefficients. Quality indices were deviced and applied for the Quality evaluation.

  • KG101 was developed by the Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute. We reported about yield trials and local adaptability test. Growth characteristics and red ginseng quality of KG101 in local performance test can be summarized as follows. Aerial parts growth, stem and leaf, was similar about KG101 and Jakyungjong, 4-year old and 6-year old ginseng. Emergence rate of KG101 was higher than Jakyungjong in the 3 location of local performance test. Taproot diameter of KG101 was smaller than Jakyungjong and taproot shape of KG101 had fitted characteristics, radish type and human body type, to manufactured red ginseng. Raw ginseng grade, 1st and 2nd of KG101 was higher than Jakyungjong's. Chun, Jeesam ratio to manufacture of 2nd grade of raw ginseng of KG101 was 25%, Jakyungjong was 6-13% in 3 location of local performance test. Distribution of red ginseng weight of Jakyungiong was heavier than KG101 in 2 location, Kongju and Jungup, but KG101 was heavier than Jakyungjong in Ichon. Red ginseng quality of KG101 was better than Jakyungiong. Main degrade factor of red ginseng quality was inside cavity and inside white, was not different lines and location.
