  • The purpose of this study was to compare the 5 OEs of Korean gifted elementary students and non-gifted and to find out the gender difference in gifted and non-gifted to clarify the best predictor of giftedness in gender group. The total subjects of this study were 372 Korean third, fourth, and fifth grade elementary school children. One hundred sixty six children of them belonged to a gifted group, and 206 were non-gifted group. Two hundreds one out of 372 subjects were boys and 171 were girls. The Overexcitability Questionnaire II(OEQII) used in this study was developed by Falk, Lind, Miller, Piechowski, & Silverman in 1999. The OEQ II is consisted of 50 Likert-type items, classified into five subscale: psychomotor, sensual, imaginational, intellectual, and emotional. And it was translated into Korean. It was administered in group sessions during the winter of 2008. Data were analyzed with SPSSWin 12.0. MANOVA was conducted to determine statistical differences by giftedness and by gender. The results revealed that the level of 5 OEs of gifted elementary children was higher than non-gifted(normal) children. The intellectual OE showed the most powerful explanation among the 5 forms of OEs. This study also found the gender difference within the gifted group as well as with the whole subjects. The mean scores of sensual, imaginational and emotional OEs were higher in girls than in boys. Based on the gender difference within the gifted group and the whole group, it is assumed that imaginational OE may be the best predictor of gifted girls among school-age children.

  • This study aimed to provide basic data for the development of education programs on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management of high school students according to gender. From July 16 to October 15, 2015, questionnaires were distributed to 30 students per grade at 16 high schools in Chungcheongnam-do, and a total of 1,214 questionnaires(excluding uncollected and insufficient questionnaires) were processed using SPSS(ver 18.0). According to the study, female students more checked the expiration date for food(3.78, 3.57), ate stored food without heating(2.83, 3.02) and stored it according to the characteristics(3.92, 3.72) than male students. On the other hand, male students answered they looked at food packaging more closely(3.34, 3.22), and always used personal plates when they ate(3.43, 3.32), than female students. Female students were always better at hand washing after went to toilet(4.25, 3.94), used individual cups when using water purifiers(3.45, 3.32), kept nails cleaner(3.61, 3.49), and went around(2.14, 2.53) and went to toilet during meals than male students(2.22, 2.57). Boys answered they were better at hand washing before meals(3.64, 3.50), with right way(3.58, 3.46), and covering with a tissue, handkerchief or sleeve when they coughed(3.55, 3.37) than girls. In this study, high school students showed significant differences between gender in food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management, with different areas requiring improvement. Therefore, this study suggests the need for education on food hygiene attitude and personal hygiene management differentiated according to gender.

  • Background: This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation with rice bran, sire breed and gender on live animal performance and carcass characteristics in Australian crossbred and purebred Merino lambs. Methods: Forty-eight lambs balanced by sire breed (Dorset, White Suffolk, Merino) and gender (ewe, wether) were randomly allocated into three dietary supplementation groups (Control- 24 lambs fed wheat/barley-based pellets, Low- 12 animals fed a 50/50 ratio of wheat-based/rice bran pellets, and High- 12 lambs fed rice bran pellets). The Rice bran pellets replaced 19 % of the barley component of the feed. Animals were group-fed at the rate of 1000 g of the supplement per head per day with ad libitum access to lucerne hay as the basal diet and water. The duration of the feeding trial was 49 days with an initial 21-day adjustment period. Results: Sire breed differences were evident for initial (p < 0.0002) and final (p < 0.0016) liveweights, hot carcass (p < 0.0030) and cold carcass (p < 0.0031) weights, as well as dressing percentage (p < 0.0078), fat thickness (p < 0.0467), yield grade (p < 0.0470) and rib eye area (p < 0.0022) with purebred Merino under-performing compared to the crossbreds. Concentrate feed conversion efficiency, costs per unit of liveweight gain and over the hooks income were comparable between treatments regardless of the observed trend where the high supplementation group tended to show lower feed intake (745.8 g/day) compared to both the control (939.9 g/day) and low supplementation groups (909.6 g/day). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between treatments for live animal performance, carcass characteristics, gender and their second-order interactions. Conclusions: Results indicate that Rice bran can be utilised as a cost-effective supplementary feed source in genetically divergent sheep over a 49-day feeding period without detrimental effects on overall live animal performance or carcass characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify various issues contributing to the current issues of students not wanting to major in science and engineering. and further explore various strategies to encourage their higher education in the science and engineering area. The study administered survey on students' perception towards the science related profession including respondents' gender, grade, their attitude towards woman scientists, perception on the woman scientists, scientists as profession, their level of knowledge on the scientists, and if there is any they respect. The results indicated that overall perceptions on the scientists as career for high school students was positive, but there was more negative acceptance for the juniors since they are more concerned with their majors at the university: higher for students who are in the natural science area than the ones in the social science school since they are more directly related than others. The perception on the woman scientists and girls in the science and engineering majors was positive. However, there were some differences in the response level among the items. Among these, considering the job availability and conditions, the perception was more negative than the others. Also the result indicated that both boys and girls disagree that the science-related profession may be gender-inappropriate for girls due to physical and cognitive characteristics. Results also indicated the level of awareness among scientists, they had higher awareness for male scientists than that of the female, and also international ones than the national ones. And many girls did not have positive image of a successful woman scientists.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between table attitudes(or table manners), nutrition knowledge, eating/snacking habits, and BMI in elementary school children. For the study, 350 [4~6th grade] elementary students were recruited and surveyed. Each response for 10 questions regarding table attitudes was scored by a 5-point scale(5 points=strongly agreed & 1 point=strongly disagreed) with a total score of 50. The reliability of 10 questions about nutrition knowledge was validated using Cronbach's ${\alpha}$(Cronbach's ${\alpha}$=0.80). Total scores for table attitudes were significantly different between the boys and girls(p<0.05). The total score for nutrition knowledge was significantly higher in the girls(7.67/10.0), compared to the boys(7.35/10.0)(p<0.05). The children showed high rates of incorrect answers in questions regarding the function or importance of specific nutrients. No significant differences between the boys and girls were found for places of snack purchase, or pocket money/day. Most of the children answered spending less than 800 won of pocket money per day. More boys preferred meals with meats and disliked Kimchi and vegetables compared to girls, and the differences were statistically significant. The score for table attitudes was significantly and negatively correlated with nutrition knowledge and gender. No significant correlations between BMI and table attitudes or nutrition knowledge were shown.
