Link-to-column connections in Eccentrically Braced Frames (EBFs) have critical role in their safety and seismic performance. Accordingly, in this study, contribution of supplemental stiffeners on hysteretic behavior of the link-to-column connection is investigated. Considered stiffeners are placed on both sides and parallel to the link web between the column face and the first stiffener of the link. Hysteretic behaviors of the link beams with supplemental stiffeners are numerically investigated using a pre-validated numerical model in ANSYS. It turned out that supplemental stiffeners can change energy dissipation mechanism of intermediate links from shear-flexure to shear. Both rectangular and trapezoidal supplemental stiffeners are studied. Moreover, optimal placement of the supplemental stiffeners is also investigated. Obtained results indicate a discrepancy of less than 9% in maximum link shear of the numerical and experimental specimens. This indicates that the numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained from the test. Trapezoidal supplemental stiffeners improve rotational capacity of the link. Moreover, use of two supplemental stiffeners at both ends of the link can more effectively improve hysteretic behavior of intermediate links. Supplemental stiffeners would also alleviate the imposed demands on the connections. This latter feature is more pronounced in the case of two supplemental stiffeners at both ends of the link.
The aim of this study focused on student-centered learning not teacher-centered teaching in middle school math classes. This study was performed to check the growth of students' problem-solving abilities, learning attitudes and changes in learning motivation among affective characteristics. The results of this study is as followings: 1) The controlled group a heterogeneous group which had classes in a math room, had more meaningful growth than the uncontrolled group. The results of the study show that the problem-solving abilities of the high-leveled group were better than those of the low-leveled group. 2) The controlled group has shown meaningful difference in their mean in learning aptitude test and attitude test converted their score into 100 points than uncontrolled group, and various kinds of learning materials suitable for problem solving are proved as a good learning factor to induce students' motivation and interest. 3) Students prefer to have classes in a math room to the small-sized and large-numbered classrooms. The atmosphere in a math room is more suitable to improving their problem-solving abilities. In this context, the classes performed in a math room are fairly positive. Consequently, students' leveled learning activities performed in a math room can get their learning motivation and attention from those who are lack of interest and think math is difficult and be effective to increase their problem-solving abilities as a learning method for acquiring the whole course of solving the problems.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate cognition on oral health education and dental caries preventive effect in kindergartens and child care facilities. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 260 teachers in kindergartens and nursery facility in Daejeon from January to February, 2013. Except incomplete answers, 248 questionnaires were analyzed by using the statistical package SPSS WIN 18.0. Results : High intention to participate in oral health education was shown in the teachers who experienced the oral health education. Dental caries preventive effect included correct tooth brushing, fluoride dentifrice, fluoride mouth rinse, and use of xylitol. The teachers agreed that the fluoride mouth rinses would help good oral health in the children. Conclusions : Teachers in kindergartens and nursery facility are the most important persons in childhood oral health care. So it is necessary to provide the continuing standardized education for the teachers systematically.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of science-based STEAM on creative thinking and creative personality. The purpose of this article is to suggest using cooperative microteaching in pre-service mathematics teachers education based on their perceptions of it after actual application case. The background of this study is that cooperative learning came into the highlight as a good method to cultivate teachers' competencies for creativity and character education as well as students' creativity and character in the mathematics classroom. 20 pre-service mathematics teachers participated in their cooperative microteaching and 16 of them responded to the survey. The collected data showed that the merits of cooperative microteaching are to ease the burden of preparing for class, to discuss how to teach mathematics, to debate what lesson is better, to receive valuable feedback form their peer, and so on. Also, it provided them with the chance for self-improvement in that they kept to make up for the week points in their teaching behavior. Meanwhile, they wanted longer time to experience their teaching and their own lesson.
Using literary materials as resources for English learning rather than an object of literary study can be a genuine tool for the students to learn English in the form of oral and written communication. This case study treated the applications of a whole text to the overall course divided into pre-reading activities, while-reading activities, and post-reading activities and the applications of some partial passages extracted from various texts to teaching objectives with many levels of difficulty. This study found that literary texts could be good materials to teach the target language in EFL setting. The English-speaking students with little linguistic competence as a foreign language may be limited in learning English at first, but soon they can accelerate their linguistic competence by reinforcing the literary competence through the literary texts. To achieve effectively a desired goal through the use of literary texts as resources for language development several concrete techniques should be introduced: teacher-guided question strategies laying a central emphasis on the text itself, a problem-solving ability through student-centered activities, process-based and open-ended activities should be presented in a variety of ways using many appropriate activities according to teaching procedure with a careful selection of the texts.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the Clusters of health promoting schools in middle and high schools for the Korean Youth Risk Behaviors Web-based Survey. Methods: The tool of health promoting school was developed based on a framework for action for health promoting schools in World Health Organization and Schools Health Index for middle and high schools in the United States by 2 professionals and 2 health teachers and revised as a result of the preliminary study. Data were collected with a questionnaire from teachers who attended the conference run by Korean Centers for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention in 2009. The data of 363 schools were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, and ANOVA. Results: As a result of comparing the scores of health promoting schools, three Clusters were identified. The Clusters differed significantly in presence of health teacher, location, and type of schools (p<.05). Conclusion: These results are a good reference in developing tailored strategies for health promoting schools, which will help improve health-promoting schools.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test a model of nursing competencies of nursing simulation learners. The conceptual model was based on the theory of Jeffries's simulaton theory. Methods: Data collection was conducted in October 2017 for 310 students from two nursing universities in Kyungbuk area for 20 days. Data analysis methods were covariance structure analysis using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 22.0 statistical programs. Results: The hypothetical model was a good fit for the data. The model fit indices were comparative fit index=.97, normed fit index=.94, Tucker-Lewis Index=.97, root mean square error of approximation=.44, and standardized root mean square residual=.04. Teacher factors were directly related to simulation design characteristics, and it was confirmed that the curriculum, classroom operation and teaching method of the instructors were important factors. Learner factors were found to have a direct effect on nursing competence, self-confidence, and clinical performance that belong to nursing capacity. In particular, the results of this study indicate that the simulation design characteristics have a partial mediating effect on learner factors and clinical performance, and a complete mediating effect on learner factors and clinical judgment ability. Conclusion: In order to improve the learner's clinical performance and clinical judgment ability, it is necessary to conduct practical training through nursing simulation besides preparing the learner and the educator.
The role of teachers has been explicitly emphasized to implement the vision of sustainable development(SD). Also, it is very important to understand the way student teachers understand SD and how they interpret their own professional task in terms of SD, usually referred to as education for sustainable development(ESD). This study investigated student teachers' perceptions of SD and ESD using group interview. Key findings include, first, that they think SD as development which does not exceed the limits of natural environment, and as wise management of resources/protection of environment for future generations. They also think SD as good thing though they don't understand the contested nature of SD. Second they think ESD as education about SD, but some student teachers say they can't explain ESD. Many student teachers prefer field trip to local examples for both elementary school students and themselves. Also they will teach only what the textbook says about SD and ESD during their school placement and as teachers. So it will be the beginning of ESD in school to include SD in the curriculum for students and student teachers. It is suggested to study student teachers' perception of SD focussing on how they think the relationship between protection of environment and economic growth.
