  • The physical property and phase transformation in a commercial dental casting high gold alloy was investigated as a function of ageing temperature and time using microvickers hardness tester, X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy and EPMA analyser. 1. With increasing ageing time, the hardness of solution-treated gold alloys increased slowly at the initial stage of ageing treatment at an ageing temperature of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, and it reached a maximum value of hardness at the medium stage. Finally, it decreased gradually during further ageing. The maximum value of hardness at was similar with that of the conventional materials and suitable for using as the crown & bridge. 2. During isothermal ageing at a temperature range of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, three phases consisting of the Au-rich ${\alpha}_1$phase with a face-centered cubic structure, the Pt3Zn ${\alpha}_2$phase with an ordered AuCu3(L12) type(f.c.c.) and the Pt-rich ${\alpha}_3$phase with face-centered cubic structure in solution-treated gold alloys were transformed into different three phases consisting of the ${\alpha}_1$phase, the ${\alpha}_3$phase and the PtZn $\beta$phase with an ordered AuCu I(L10) type. 3. The hardening of gold alloys was attributed to the lattice strains of the matrix resulting from the transformation of the ${\alpha}_2$phase to the $\beta$phase. 4. The softening of gold alloys during over-ageing was attributed to the coarsening of the nodules consisting of the $\beta$phase and ${\alpha}_1$matrix.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three different surface conditioning methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets bonded directly to gold alloy with chemically cured resin. Methods: Two hundred ten type III gold alloy specimens were randomly divided into six groups according to the combination of three different surface conditioning methods (aluminum oxide sandblasting only, application of a metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting, silica coating and silanation) and thermocycling (with thermocycling, without thermocycling). After performing surface conditioning of specimens in accordance with each experimental condition, metal brackets were bonded to all specimens using a chemically cured resin. The SBS was measured at the moment of bracket debonding, and the resin remnants on the specimen surface were evaluated using the adhesive remnant index. Results: Application of metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting yielded a higher bond strength than that with aluminum oxide sandblasting alone (p < 0.001), and silica coating and silanation yielded a higher bond strength than that with metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting (p < 0.001). There was no significant change in SBS after thermocycling in all groups. Conclusions: With silica coating and silanation, clinically satisfactory bond strength can be attained when metal brackets are directly bonded to gold alloys using a chemically cured resin.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue, physical properties, flexibility and surface roughness of titanium used in removable partial dentures with those of a type IV and alloy and a cobalt- chromium alloy. Fatigue testing subjected the test specimen to rapid cycling at a given stress until failure occurred by using a small-sized, electrodynamic type bending fatigue testing machine. The S-N curves for the framework materials were generated. For tensile testing, a tensile bar as described in the ADA Specification No.14 was subjected to tensile loading until failure occurred. Load-displacement curves were generated for 18 gauge round specimen and tapered half round specimen. Then the flexibilities were calculated. The surface roughnesses were compared by analyzer. Through analyses of the data, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The fatigue property of titanium was higher than that of a type IV gold alloy$(p\leq0.05)$, but there was no significant difference between titanium and a cobalt-chromium alloy $(p\geq0.05)$. 2. The yield strength, the ultimate tensile strength and Victors hardness of titanium were higher than those of a type IV gold alloy but lower than those of a coalt-chromium alloy$(p\leq0.05)$. 3. The percentage of elongation and reduction of area of titanium were the highest $(p\leq0.05)$. 4. The surface roughness of titanium was the greatest$(p\leq0.05)$. 5. The flexibility of titanium was lower than that of a type IV gold alloy but higher than that of a cobalt-chromium alloy$(p\leq0.05)$.

  • Purpose: In this study, we evaluated the bond-strength between a few metal ceramic-alloys and veneered-porcelain and found if the bond strength of metal-ceramic alloy with lower gold content than the presently used gold alloy was high enough. Materials and methods: For this study, after plasticizing porcelain only for gold alloy, metal specimen was fabricated using Ni-Cr alloy and gold alloy with different gold content. Three point flexural test were performed to measure their bond-strength. Results: The bonding strength of Group 1 to porcelain was $40.62{\pm}3.32$ MPa, which was the highest (P<.05). In sequence of decreasing value, Group 2 (75%) was $37.47{\pm}1.57$ MPa, Group 3 (52%) $35.85{\pm}1.48$ MPa, Group 4 (51.5%) $35.04{\pm}1.34$ MPa, Group 5 (32%) $33.17{\pm}1.62$ MPa, Group 6 (10%) $30.75{\pm}1.21$ MPa. Bonding strength of Group 3 and Group 4 to porcelain did not show statistically significant difference with comparison to that of Group 5 (Duncan's test, P>.05), while there was a significant difference between that of Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4 and that of Group 6 (Duncan's test, P<.05). The bonding strength between gold alloy and porcelain increased according to the content of gold. In all experimental groups showed higher value than 25 MPa, which is the least value recommended by ISO 9693. Conclusion: In all groups, bonding strength was higher than 25 MPa, which is the least value of ISO9693. Therefore, it is considered that metal gold alloy with low gold content is clinically usable.

  • Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of silanation time on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets on gold alloy in a silicoating procedure and compare the SBS of metal brackets on gold alloy and enamel. Methods: Type III gold alloy plates were sandblasted with 30-${\mu}m$ silicon dioxide. Excess particles were removed with gentle air after silica coating, and silane was applied. Maxillary central-incisor metal brackets were bonded to each conditioned alloy surface with a light curing resin adhesive for 1 s, 30 s, 60 s, or 120 s after applying silane. The brackets were also bonded to 36 upper central incisors with the same adhesive. All samples were cured for 40 s with a light emitting diode curing light. The SBS was tested after 1 h and after 24 h. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) of the samples was also compared. Results: The 60-s and 120-s silanation time groups showed a higher SBS than the other groups (p < 0.05). Samples tested after 24 h showed a significantly higher SBS than did the samples tested after 1 h (p < 0.05). The 1-s group showed higher ARI scores. The one-way analysis of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls test showed that the SBS values of the 60-s and 120-s silanation time groups were not significantly different from the SBS values of enamel. Conclusions: Adequate silanation time is required to produce sufficient bond strength during silicoating.

  • Traditionally, many kinds of mechanical bonding techniques were used for bonding resins to the surface of the metal alloys. If there is a seperation between resin and metal junction by stress accumulation and temperature change of oral cavity, the cracks or crazing may occur, accompanied by failure of resin bonding to metal. This study was designed to compare the shear bond strength of the type IV gold alloy and Cr-Co alloy surfaces treated with various methods and thermocycling. Universal Instron (Model 1000) and scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Japan) was used to record the shear bond strength of 5 groups. Forty specimens were made for each group ; group 1 was treated with sandblasting only, group 2 was coated with V-primer after sandblasting, group 3 was coated with Metal primer, group 4 wase coated with MR Bond and group 5 was coated with silane. After treated with various methods, thermocycling was done for half of the each group. The surfaces of failed pattern were observed with SEM. The results were as follows : 1. Shear bond strength of the group 1 was lower than that of another groups in type IV gold alloys and bond strength of the group 1, 2 were lower than that of group 3, 4, 5 in Cr-Co alloys. 2. Shear bond strength of the gold alloy with resin was higher than that of Cr-Co alloy when specimens were coated with V-primer. 3. Shear bond strength of the Co-Cr alloys with resin was higher than that of gold alloys when specimens were coated with Metal primer. 4. The bond strength of all specimens did not decreased significantly after thermocycling. 5. Adhesive failures were found in group 1 and Cr-Co alloy in group 2, but adhesive and cohesive failures were found in another groups.

  • Statement of problem : There have been previous studies about considerable variations in machining accuracy and consistency in the implant-abutment-screw interfaces. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the machining accuracy and consistency of implant/abutment/screw combinations on two randomly selected implants from each of four manufactures. Material and methods : In this study, screws were respectively used to secure a cemented abutment, to a hexlock implant fixture ; teflon coated titanium alloy screw(Torq-Tite) and titanium alloy screw in Steri--Oss system, gold-plated gold-palladium alloy screw(Gold-Tite) and titanium alloy screw in 3i system gild screw ana titanium screw in AVANA Dental Implant system, and titanium screws in Paragon System. The implants were perpendicularly mounted in polymethyl methacrylate autopolymerizing acrylic resin block(Orthodontic resin, Densply International Inc. USA) by use of dental surveyer. Each abutment screw was secured to the implant with recommended torque value using a digital torque controller. Each screw was again tightened after 10 minutes. All samples were cross sectioned with grinder-polisher unit(Omnilap 2000 SBT Inc) after embeded in liquid unsaturated polyester (Epovia, Cray Valley Inc) Results : There were the largest gaps in the neck areas of screws in hexagonal extension implants which were examined in this study. The leading edge of the abutment screw thread (superior surface) was in contact with the implant body thread, and the majority of the contacting surfaces were localized to the middle portion of the mating threads. Considerable variation in the contacting surfaces was noted in the samples evaluated. Amounts of contact in the abutment screw thread were larger for assemblies with Gold-Tite screw, gold alloy screw. Torq-Tite screw than those with titanium screws. The findings of intimate contact between the screw and screw seat were seen in all samples, regardless of manufacturers. However, microgap between the head and lateral neck surface of the screw and the abutment could be dectected in all samples. The findings of intimate contact between the platform of the implant and the bottom of the abutment were consistent in all samples, regardless of manufacturers. However, microgaps between the lateral surface of external hex of the fixture and the abutment could be dectected in all samples. Conclusion : Considerable variations in machining accuracy and consistency were noted in the samples and the implant-abutment-screw interfaces were incomplete. From the results of this study, further development of the system will be required, including improvements in pattern design.

  • By using the discrete-dipole approximation, we computed the extinction spectrum of a gold-silver alloy nanoparticle. We have examined how the surface plasmon resonance changes with respect to the variation in the composition of the alloy particle. As the fraction of silver increases for a 10nm particle, the peak position of the extinction spectrum blue-shifts linearly. The intensity of the peak however increases exponentially with increasing the silver fraction. These results are in accord with the previous experimental results.
