  • This study intends to evaluate the conservativeness of the fixed-base analysis as compared to the soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis for the seismically isolated model of a nuclear power plant in Korea. To that goal, the boundary reaction method (BRM), combining frequency-domain and time-domain analyses in a twofold process, is adopted for the SSI analysis considering the nonlinearity of the seismic base isolation. The program KIESSI-3D is used for computing the reaction forces in the frequency domain and the program MIDAS/Civil is applied for the nonlinear time-domain analysis. The BRM numerical model is verified by comparing the results of the frequency-domain analysis and time-domain analysis for the soil-structure system with an equivalent linear base isolation model. Moreover, the displacement response of the base isolation and the horizontal response at the top of the structure obtained by the nonlinear SSI analysis using BRM are compared with those obtained by the fixed-base analysis. The comparison reveals that the fixed-base analysis provides conservative peak deformation for the base isolation but is not particularly conservative in term of the floor response spectrum of the superstructure.

  • As the technology developed, the system is being developed as the structure that is adapted to the intelligent environment. Therefore, the existing situation information system couldn't provide satisfactory service to the user as it provides service only by the information which it received from the sensor. This paper analyzed the problems of the existing user intention awareness system and suggested user intention awareness system to provide a stable and efficient service that fits to the intention of the user compensating this. This paper has collected the behavior data based on the scenario of the sequential behavior course of the user that occurs at breakfast time in the kitchen which is the home domain environment thai is closely related to our lives. This scenario course also showed the flow that the goal intentional user intention awareness system acted that it suggested, and showed the sequential course processing the user behavior data by tables and charts.

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI architecture of Reed-Solomon decoder. Our goal is the development of an architecture featuring parallel and pipelined processing to improve the speed and low power design. To achieve the this goal, we analyze the RS decoding algorithm to be used parallel and pipelined processing efficiently, and modified the Euclid's algorithm arithmetic part to apply the parallel structure in RS decoder. The overall RS decoder are compared to Shao's, and we show the 10% area efficiency than Shao's time domain decoder and three times faster, in addition, we approve the proposed RS decoders with Altera FPGA Flex 10K-50, and Implemeted with LG 0.6{\mu}$ processing.

  • Korean government has adopted the French TGV as a high-speed transportation system and the first service is scheduled at the end of 2003. TGV-relevant documents are consisted of huge volumes, of which over than 76% has been translated in English. A large part of the English version is, however, incomprehensible without referring to the original French version. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how DiET 2.5, a lexicon builder, makes it possible to build with ease domain-specific terminology lexicon that may contain multimedia and multilingual data with multi-layered logical information. We believe our wok shows an important step in enlarging the language scope and the development of electronic lexica, and in providing the flexibility of defining any type of the DTD and the interconnectivity among collaborators. As an application of DiET 2.5, we would like to build a TGV-relevant lexicon in the near future.

  • This research is a study on student's understanding fundamental concepts of mathematical curriculum, especially in geometry domain. The goal of researching is to analyze student's concepts about that domain and get the mathematical teaching methods. We developed various questions of descriptive assessment. Then we set up the term, procedure of research for the understanding student's knowledge of geometric figures. And we analyze the student's understanding extent through investigating questions of descriptive assessment. In this research, we concluded that most of students are having difficulty with defining the fundamental concepts of mathematics, especially in geometry. Almost all the students defined the fundamental conceptions of mathematics obscurely and sometimes even missed indispensable properties. And they can't distinguish between concept definition and concept image. Prior to this study, we couldn't identify this problem. Here are some suggestions. First, take time to reflect on your previous mathematics method. And then compile some well-selected questions of descriptive assessment that tell us more about student's understanding in geometric concepts.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the status and the problem of environmental education in schools. For this investigation, sub-goals to the general goal for environmental education such as knowledge, awareness, attitude, skill, participation, and evaluation were classified. The contents and objects of the environment-related chapters in elementary and secondary school science texts and of the materials for environmental education were analyzed. Resultingly, the content and objects focused on the cognitive domain such as knowledge and skill category in science texts($85{\sim}92\;%$) and in the materials for environmental education($70{\sim}84\;%$). The result indicated that the objects of the cognitive domain were heavily emphasized in the present environmental education.

  • Design, Simulation and experimental analysis of closed loop time domain based Discrete PWM buck-boost converter are described. To improve the transient response and dynamic stability of the proposed converter, Discrete PID controller is the most preferable one. Discrete controller does not require any precise analytical model of the system to be controlled. The control system of the converter is designed using digital PWM technique. The proposed controller improves the dynamic performance of the buck-boost converter by achieving a robust output voltage against load disturbances, input voltage variations and changes in circuit components. The converter is designed through simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and performance parameters are also measured. The discrete controller is implemented, and design goal is achieved and the same is verified against theoretical calculation using LabVIEW.

  • This paper presents a new self-adjoint material sensitivity formulation for optimal designs and inverse problems in the high frequency domain. The proposed method is based on the continuum approach using the augmented Lagrangian method. Using the self-adjoint formulation, there is no need to solve the adjoint system additionally when the goal function is a function of the S-parameter. In addition, the algorithm is more general than most previous approaches because it is independent of specific analysis methods or gridding techniques, thereby enabling the use of commercial EM simulators and various custom solvers. For verification, the method was applied to the several numerical examples of dielectric material reconstruction problems in the high frequency domain, and the results were compared with those calculated using the conventional method.

  • The Francis-99 is a workshop initiated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and Lulea University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, in order to further validate the capabilities of the CFD technologies. The goal of the first workshop is to determine the state of the art of numerical predictions for steady operating conditions. When performing the CFD analysis, some geometry details are often neglected. In case of Francis Turbine, labyrinth seals are usually not include in the simulation domain, this may lead to inaccurate prediction of turbine efficiency. In this study, the CFD analysis for Francis-99 Workshop model has been performed for full domain of machine including top and bottom labyrinth seals. The efficiency value and distribution of velocity and pressure have been investigated and compared to the experimental data obtained from NTNU. By comparing the results, it was found that: With the top and bottom labyrinth seals in the domain, the CFD result was significantly improved in prediction of efficiency at all the operating point, especially at part load.

  • An approach to 3D visualization of multiple sound sources has been developed with the application of a moving array technique. Frequency-domain beamforming algorithm is used to generate a beam power map and the sound source is modeled as a point source. When a conventional delay and sum beamformer is used, it is considered that 2D distribution of sensors leads to have deficiency in spatial resolution along a measurement distance. The goal of moving an array in this study is to form 3D array aperture surrounding multiple sound sources so that the improved spatial resolution in a virtual space can be expected. Numerical simulation was made to examine source localization capabilities of various shapes of array. The 3D beam power maps of hemispherical and spherical distribution are found to have very sharp resolution. For experiments, two sound sources were placed in the middle of defined virtual space and arc-shaped line array was rotated around the sources. It is observed that spherical array show the most accurate determination of multiple sources' positions.
