  • The idea of using hand gestures for human-computer interaction is not new and has been studied intensively during the last dorado with a significant amount of qualitative progress that, however, has been short of our expectations. This paper describes a dynamic Bayesian network or DBN based approach to both two-hand gestures and one-hand gestures. Unlike wired glove-based approaches, the success of camera-based methods depends greatly on the image processing and feature extraction results. So the proposed method of DBN-based inference is preceded by fail-safe steps of skin extraction and modeling, and motion tracking. Then a new gesture recognition model for a set of both one-hand and two-hand gestures is proposed based on the dynamic Bayesian network framework which makes it easy to represent the relationship among features and incorporate new information to a model. In an experiment with ten isolated gestures, we obtained the recognition rate upwards of 99.59% with cross validation. The proposed model and the related approach are believed to have a strong potential for successful applications to other related problems such as sign languages.

  • There are a variety of methods to model game results and many methods exist for the case of paired comparison data. Among them, the Bradley-Terry model is the most widely used to derive a latent preference scale from paired comparison data. It has been applied in a variety of fields in psychology and related disciplines. We applied this model to the data of Korean Baseball League. It shows that the loglinear Bradley-Terry model of defensive rate and save is optimal in terms of AIC. Also some categorical characteristics, such as east team and west team, existence of golden glove winning players, team(s) with seasonal pitching leader, and team(s) with home advantage, influenced the game result significantly. As a result, the suggested models can be further utilized to predict future game results.

  • Tetraiodothyroacetic acid (tetrac) is a derivative of thyroid hormone T4 and causes anti-angiogenesis by blocking T4 binding to integrin αvβ3. In this study, we synthesized [99mTc]Tc-Cys-Asp-Gly(CDG)-tetrac and evaluated it in vitro as a tumor angiogenesis imaging ligand. The CDG was conjugated to tetrac as a chelator for technetium-99m labeling. The cold vial containing CDG-tetrac, sodium glucoheptonate, and reducing agent was completed under nitrogen-filled atmospheric glove bag. [99mTc]Tc-CDG-tetrac was synthesized in quantitative yield by heating the cold vial with [99mTc]TcO4- at 100℃ for 30 min. In vitro serum stability of [99mTc]Tc-CDG-tetrac was measured by incubating the radioligand in 50% fetal bovine serum at 37℃ and analyzing the incubation mixture by radio-TLC, which showed high stability over 6 h (≥ 98%). Cell binding study was carried out by incubating [99mTc]Tc-CDG-tetrac with human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVE) cells at 37℃ for 6 h. The cell binding of the radioligand increased from 100% at 0.5 h to 293.7% at 6 h in a time-dependent manner. For blocking study, the cells were incubated with the radioligand in the presence of either tetrac (20 μM) or cRGDyK (20 μM) at 37℃ for 4 h. The results demonstrated that the cell binding of the radioligand was inhibited by tetrac (19.1%) or cRGDyK (35.6%), indicating specific binding of the radioligand to integrin αvβ3. Thus, this study suggests that [99mTc]Tc-CDG-tetrac may be a potential radioligand for tumor angiogenesis imaging.

  • In this paper, we propose a PC based immersive virtual environment system with expandability and compatibility in contrary to existing immersive virtual environment(IVE) systems which have been implemented by supercomputer or special computing system. The application based on commercial personal compute may have two major advantage: one is variety of resources, the other is user-friendly interface. This system intends to offer easy contact to IVE system, realistic images, and convenience. Also, the system can handle various virtual reality at real-time and make it easier to interface existing complicated haptic device. Geometric techniques are adopted to calculate and visualize the physical phenomenon to speed up the computing time. The proposed implementation method of PC based immersive virtual environment system is implemented to the example in which user move around inside of and interact with virtual office environment wearing data glove, behavior recognition devices, and HMD.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare three surgical scrub methods-4% chlorhexidine gluconate(CHG) with brush, 4% CHG without brush, and waterless scrub using 1% CHG and 61% ethanol combination(alcohol-based agent)-for antimicrobial efficacy. Method: "Glove-juice technique" was used to evaluate microbial hand counts before surgical scrubs, 1 min and 3 hr after surgical scrubs. Result: Waterless scrub using CHG and ethanol combination resulted in a 4.8-log reduction at 1 min and 4.0-log reduction at 3 hr. CHG without brush resulted in a 4.7-log reduction at 1 min and 3.3-log reduction at 3 hr. The traditional scrub using CHG with brush resulted in a 3.6-log reduction at 1 min and 0.8-log reduction at 3 hr. The waterless scrub and CHG without brush showed significantly higher log reduction(p<.05) than CHG with brush at 1 min and 3 hr after surgical scrub. Waterless scrub showed greater log reductions than CHG without brush, but there was no statistical difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Waterless scrub using alcohol-based agent showed more persistent and immediate antimicrobial efficacy than either CHG with brush or CHG without brush.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the wearing condition on gloves for pilots and to suggest the developments for pilot gloves design. This survey was performed with 99 pilots and the questionnaires included items about discomfort, materials and problems when wearing pilot gloves. The respondents felt uncomfortable on the finger tip, the hollow area of the hand and the end of thumb when they move their hands with the gloves. They replied that the finger length, palm length, and circumference of the fingers did not match well. Also they complained there was severe abrasion in the tip of the thumb, finger tips and the middle of the palm of the gloves. The result of these analyses supports the following suggestions. It is necessary to improve durability by applying the additional materials to the severely worn parts. Punching on the glove materials could improve sweat rate and ventilation, and careful washing should be accompanied to prevent the occurrence of linters and transformation after laundering. And it is needed to prepare an accurate and more diversified size system and to design the gloves fitted to the individual hands. With these in mind, it is required to propose solutions for pilot gloves with reference to the survey results in order to design appropriate pilot gloves in terms of movement, size and material. It was concluded that an analysis of the wearing condition and developments are useful for ergonomics pilot gloves design.

  • Farmers are generally expressed to pesticides through mixing loding, application activity and harvesting of crop after application of pesticides. The present work investigated the exposure and risk of furathiocarb to workers when harvesting of cucumber was carried out in green house after application of furathiocarb EC. Glove was used for the hand exposure assessment, socks for foot and dermal patches for the other parts of body. Personal air monitor equipped with a XAD-2 resin was used for the respiratory exposure assessment. During the harvest of cucumber in green house, the initial rate of potential dermal exposure (Day 1) for methidathion was 1.3 mg/hr. The major exposure parts were hand $(78\~83\%),\;thigh\;(5\~7\%)$ and arms $(6\~9\%)$ during 3 days' harvest. No exposure was detected from the respiratory monitoring. For risk assessment, the potential dermal exposure (PDE), the absorbable quantity of exposure (AQE) and the margin of safety (MOS) and margin of exposure (MOE) were calculated. In risk assessment of harvester exposure for 7days, all MOS was > 1 and MOE was > 100 indicating that possibility of risk was little.
