The purpose of this paper is to understand and model the slow current (~2 m/s) effects on the global response of a floating offshore platform in waves. A time-domain numerical simulation of full wave-current-body interaction by a quadratic boundary element method (QBEM) is applied to compute the hydrodynamic loads and motions of a floating body under the combined influence of waves and current. The study is performed in the context of linearized potential flow theory that is sufficient in understanding the leading-order current effect on the body motion. The numerical simulations are validated by quantitative comparisons of the hydrodynamic coefficients with the WAMIT prediction for a truncated vertical circular cylinder in the absence of current. It is found from the simulation results that the presence of current leads to a loss of symmetry in flow dynamics for a tension-leg platform (TLP) with symmetric geometry, resulting in the coupling of the heave motion with the surge and pitch motions. Moreover, the presence of current largely affects the wave excitation force and moment as well as the motion of the platform while it has a negligible influence on the added mass and damping coefficients. It is also found that the current effect is strongly correlated with the wavelength but not frequency of the wave field. The global motion of a floating body in the presence of a slow current at relatively small encounter wave frequencies can be satisfactorily approximated by the response of the body in the absence of current at the intrinsic frequency corresponding to the same wavelength as in the presence of current. This finding has a significant implication in the model test of global motions of offshore structures in ocean waves and currents.

This paper describes a whole-body (human body's) motion generation scheme for an android robot that uses motion capture device and a nonlinear constrained optimization method. Because the captured motion data are based on global coordinates and the actors have different heights and different upper-lower body ratios, the captured motion data cannot be used directly for a humanoid robot. In this paper, we suggest a method for obtaining robot joint angles, which allow the resultant robot motion to be as close as possible to the captured human motion data, by applying a nonlinear constrained optimization method. In addition, the results are animated to demonstrate the similarity of the motions.
After prolonged viewing of a moving pattern, a stationary pattern can appear to move in the opposite direction, a phenomenon known as motion aftereffect (MAE). Unlike the classical explanation MAE was not confined to an adapted region; instead it can spread to an adjacent region, which was not adapted previously. In order to examine the relative locus of the mechanism responsible for MAE spreading, a rotating harmonic spiral pattern was presented as an adapting stimulus within an annulus window, and then the duration of MAE was measured in both the adapted annulus region and the non-adapted inner region. Two different kinds of test patterns were used: the same and mirror images of the original adapting pattern. An interesting characteristic of a harmonic spiral is that the orientation of a contour at a given location is different from thar of its mirror image by 90 degrees, and consequently the adapting effect of local motion detector is not expected to occur in the mirror image. The results showed that MAE duration in an adapted region was longer in the same image condition than in its mirror image condition, while MAE duration in an non-adapted region was not found to be different between those two different image conditions. These results suggest that MAE spreading might be produced by the adaptation of global motion detectors, not by local motion detectors.
We propose a block motion estimation algorithm based on a statistical image feature for video sequences. The statistical feature of the reference block is obtained, then applied to select the candidate starting points (SPs) in the regular starting points pattern (SPP) by comparing the statistical feature of reference block with that of blocks which are spread ower regular SPP. The final SPs are obtained by their Mean Absolute Difference(MAD) value among the candidate SPs. Finally, one of conventional fast search algorithms, such as BRGDS, DS, and three-step search (TSS), has been applied to generate the motion vector of reference block using the final SPs as its starting points. The experimental results showed that the starting points from fine SPs were as dose as to the global minimum as we expected.
An efficient method of formulating the equations of motion of multibody systems is presented. The equations of motion for each body are formulated by using Newton-Eulerian approach in their generic form. And then a transformation matrix which relates the global coordinates and relative coordinates is introduced to rewrite the equations of motion in terms of relative coordinates. When appropriate set of kinematic constraints equations in terms of relative coordinates is provided, the resulting differential and algebraic equations are obtained in a suitable form for computer implementation. The system geometry or topology is effectively described by using the path matrix and reference body operator.

Screen splitting is one of the fundamental tasks in different methods including video and image compression, screen classification, screen content coding and the like. These methods in turn support various applications in data communications, remote screen sharing, remote desktop delivery to assist teaching-learning, telemedicine, Desktop as a Service etc. In the literature we find systems requiring splitting assumes a fixed size split that do not change dynamically, also there is no analysis why that split is chosen in terms of performance. By doing mathematical analysis this paper first finds the efficient splitting schemes that can be easily automated to make a system adaptive. Thereafter, taking the screen motion detection as a case study, it demonstrates the effects of various splitting methods on motion detection performance. The simulation results clearly shows how classification performances varies with different splitting which will facilitate to choose the best splitting for a specific application scenario as well as making the system adaptive by providing dynamic splitting.
The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.
Block based fast motion estimation algorithm use the fixed search pattern to reduce the search point, and are based on the assumption that the error in the mean absolute error space monotonically decreases to the global minimum. Therefore, in case of many local minima in a search region we are likely to find local minima instead of the global minimum and highly rely on the initial search points. This situation is evident in the motion boundary. In this paper we define the candidate regions within the search region using the motion information of the neighbor blocks and we propose the multiple local search method (MLSM) which search for the solution throughout the candidate regions to reduce the possibilities of isolation to the local minima. In the MLSM we mark the candidate region in the search point map and we avoid to search the candidate regions already visited to reduce the calculation. In the simulation results the proposed method shows more excellent results than that of other gradient based method especially in the search of motion boundary. Especially, in PSNR the proposed method obtains similar estimate accuracy with the significant reduction of search points to that of full search.

A descriptor which is suitable for motion analysis by using the motion features of moving objects from the real time image sequence is proposed. To segment moving objects from the background, the background learning is performed. We extract motion trajectories of individual objects by using the sequence of the $1^{st}$ order moment of moving objects. The center points of each object are managed by linked list. The descriptor includes the $1^{st}$ order coordinates of moving object belong to neighbor of the per-defined position in grid pattern, the start frame number which a moving object appeared in the scene and the end frame number which it disappeared. A video retrieval by the proposed descriptor combining global and local feature is more effective than conventional methods which adopt a single feature among global and local features.

A selective coding scheme is proposed that describes a method for coding image sequences distinguishing bits between background and target region. The suggested method initially estimates global motion parameters and local motion vectors. Then segmentation is performed with a hierarchical clustering scheme and a quadtree algorithm in order to divide the processing image into the backgraound and target region. Finally image coding is done by assigning more bits to the target region and less bits to background so that the target region may be reconstructed with high quality. Simulations show that the suggested algorithm performs well especially in the circumstances where background changes and target regionis small enough compared with that of background.
