TRAFFIC FLOW MODELS WITH NONLOCAL LOOKING AHEAD-BEHIND DYNAMICS

  • Motivated by the traffic flow model with Arrhenius looka-head relaxation dynamics introduced in [25], this paper proposes a traffic flow model with look ahead relaxation-behind intensification by inserting look behind intensification dynamics to the flux. Finite time shock formation conditions in the proposed model with various types of interaction potentials are identified. Several numerical experiments are performed in order to demonstrate the performance of the modified model. It is observed that, comparing to other well-known macroscopic traffic flow models, the model equipped with look ahead relaxation-behind intensification has both enhanced dispersive and smoothing effects.

Methane emission from municipal solid waste dumpsites: A case study of Chennai city in India

  • The indiscriminate growth in global population poses a threat to the world in handling and disposal of Municipal solid waste. Rapid urban growth increases the production, consumption and generation of Municipal solid waste which leads to a drastic change in the environment. The methane produced from the Municipal Solid waste accounts for up to 11% global anthropogenic emissions, which is a major cause for global warming. This study reports the methane emission estimation using IPCC default, TNO, LandGEM, EPER and close flux chamber from open dump yards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur in Chennai, India. The result reveals that the methane emission using close flux chamber was in the range of 8.8 Gg/yr-11.3 Gg/yr and 6.1Gg/yr to 9.1 Gg/yr at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dump yard respectively. The per capita waste generation was estimated based on waste generation and population. The waste generation potential was projected using linear regression model for the period 2017-2050. The trend of CH4 emission in the actual field measurement were increased every year, similarly the emission trend also increased in IPCC default method (mass balance approach), EPER Germany (zero order decay model) where as TNO and Land GEM (first order decay model) were decreased. The present study reveals that Kodungaiyur dump yard is more vulnerable to methane emission compared to Perungudi dump yard and has more potential in waste to energy conversion mechanisms than compare to Perungudi dump yard.

  • The first domestic expert workshop on surface flux measurement and modeling was held on 10-12 June 2009 in Seoul to invigorate research cooperation on soil-vegetation-atmosphere interactions in Korea and to promote interdisciplinary studies. This article provides a summary of the workshop presentations and recommendations, and future research directions for surface processes in Korea.

고해상도 위성영상과 수치고도모형에 근거한 광릉 산림 관측지의 공간적 특성 (Spatial Characteristics of Gwangneung Forest Site Based on High Resolution Satellite Images and DEM)

  • 농림생태계에서의 물과 탄소의 순환을 연구하려면, 먼저 관측지의 공간적 특성을 정량적으로 이해해야 한다 특히, 우리나라와 같은 복잡한 경관에 관측지가 위치한 경우에는 공간 특성의 이해가 더욱 더 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 광릉 산림 소유역의 지형, 식생 및 토양과 관련된 변수들의 공간적 특성을 정량화하였다 지형의 공간 특성을 산출하기 위해 수치고도 모형 (DEM)에서 계산된 고도, 경사 및 사면 정보를 분석하였다. 식생과 토양 정보는 LANDSAT TM 영상으로부터 제작된 지표 피복 지도를 사용하였다. 계절 특성을 살펴보기 위해 1999년 6월 30일, 2000년 9월 4일, 2001년 9월 23일, 2002년 2월 14일의 네 위성 영상을 사용하였다. CO₂와 수증기의 플럭스 지수로서, 위성 영상으로부터 식생지수 NDVI를 세 격자 크기 (7km x 7km MODIS 격자, 3km x 3km 집중관측 격자, 1km x 1km 단위 격자)에 대해 각각 도출하였다. 반분산 분석에 근거해서 이 자료들을 사용하여 관측지의 비균질성의 공간 규모를 계산하였다. 예상한대로, 격자의 크기가 작아질수록 비균질성의 규모가 작아졌고, 식생의 계절 변화에 민감하였다. 40m 플럭스 타워가 위치한 두 단위 격자의 경우, 비균질성의 공간 규모는 200~1000m 이었고, 이러한 공간 규모는 모형에서 계산된 타워 플럭스 발자국의 기후도와 잘 일치하였다.

  • Calibration experiments were executed to document pertinent calibration methods for open-path infrared gas analyzer (OP-2) in field operations and to quantify their performance characteristics in continuous long-term flux measurements. Based on our results, we concluded: (1) flow rate of 2.0 L min$^{-1}$ can be used for calibration instead of the recommended 0.5 L min$^{-1}$ . Such faster flow rate brings the sampled air in the calibration hood at equilibrium within 5 min for $CO_2$ and 10 min for $H_2O$; (2) after reaching equilibrium, two-minute average sampling for related variables per each concentration may be sufficient; (3) use of four concentration is needed to derive the nonlinear calibration equation for water vapor with 1% uncertainty of flux measurement; and (4) the resultant calibration interval for OP-2 for both $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ is approximately one month.

플럭스챔버에 의한 매립지표면 메탄의 배출량 측정과 분석 (Surface Flux Measurements of Methane from Lamdfills by Closed Chamber Technique and its Validation)

  • Next to carbon dioxide, methane is the second largest contributor to global warming among anthropogenic greenhouse gases. Methane is emitted into the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Natural sources include wetlands, termites, wildries, ocean and freshwater. Anthropogenic sources include landfill, natural gas and oil production, and agriculture. These manmade sources account for about 70% of total global methane emissions; and among these, landfill accounts for approximately 10% of total manmade emissions. Solid waste landfills produce methane as bacteria decompose organic wastes under anaerobic conditions. Methane accounts for approximately 45 to 50 percent of landfill gas, while carbon dioxide and small quantities of other gases comprise the remaining to 50 to 55 percent. Using the closed enclosure technique, surface emission fluxes of methane from the selected landfill sites were measured. These data were used to estimate national methane emission rate from domestic landfills. During the three different periods, flux experiments were conducted at the sites from June 30 through December 26, 1999. The chamber technique employed for these experiments was validated in situ. Samples were collected directly by on-site flux chamber and analyzed for the variation of methane concentration by gas chromatography equipped with FID. Surface emission rates of methane were found out to vary with space and time. Significant seasonal variation was observed during the experimental period. Methane emission rates were estimated to be 64.5$\pm$54.5mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr from Kimpo landifll site. 357.4$\pm$68.9mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr and 8.1$\pm$12.4mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at KwanJu(managed and unmanaged), 472.7$\pm$1056mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at JonJu, and 482.4$\pm$1140 mgCH$_4$/$m^2$/hr at KunSan. These measurement data were used for the extrapolation of national methane emission rate based on 1997 national solid waste data. The results were compared to those derived by theoretical first decay model suggested by IPCC guidelines.

기후변동성에 따른 육상 탄소 순환의 반응 (Response of the Terrestrial Carbon Exchange to the Climate Variability)

  • The global terrestrial ecosystems have shown a large spatial variability in recent decades and represented a carbon sink pattern at mid-to-high latitude in Northern Hemisphere. However, there are many uncertainties in magnitude and spatial distribution of terrestrial carbon fluxes due to the effect of climate factors. So, it needs to accurately understand the spatio-temporal variations on carbon exchange flux with climate. This study focused on the effects of climate factors, .i.e. temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation, to terrestrial biosphere carbon flux. We used the terrestrial carbon flux that is simulated by a CarbonTracker, which performs data assimilation of global atmospheric $CO_2$ mole fraction measurements. We demonstrated significant interactions between Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) and climate factors by using the partial correlation analysis. NEP showed positive correlation with temperature at mid-to-high latitude in Northern Hemisphere but showed negative correlation pattern at $0-30^{\circ}N$. Also, NEP represented mostly negative correlation with precipitation at $60^{\circ}S-30^{\circ}N$. Solar radiation affected NEP positively at all latitudes and percentage of positive correlation at tropical regions was relatively lower than other latitudes. Spring and summer warming had potentially positive effect on NEP in Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand as increasing the temperature in autumn, NEP was largely reduced in most northern terrestrial ecosystems. The NEP variability that depends on climate factors also differently represented with the type of vegetation. Especially in crop regions, land carbon sinks had positive correlation with temperature but showed negative correlation with precipitation.

A Novel Space Vector modulation Scheme and Direct Torque Control for Four-switch BLDCM Using Flux Observer

  • The main purpose of this paper is to describe a DTC (direct torque control) method for four-switch brushless dc motor (BLDCM) drive. In the method, a novel voltage space vector modulation scheme, an optimal switching table, and a flux observation method are proposed. Eight voltage vectors are summarized, which are selected to control BLDCM in SVPWM pattern, and an optimal switching table is proposed to improve the torque distortion caused by midpoint current of the split capacitors. Unlike conventional flux observers, this observer does not require speed adaptation and is not susceptible to speed estimation errors, especially, at low speed. Global asymptotic stability of the flux observer is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability analysis. DC-offset effects are mitigated by introducing a PI component in the observer gains. This method alleviates the undesired current and torque distortion which is caused by uncontrollable phase. The correctness and feasibility of the method are proved by simulation and experimental results.
