  • GPS(Global Positioning System) signal structure uses spread spectrum and the received power is relatively lower than the receiver noise figure. Therefore, it is vulnerable to the RF interferences and it could restrict on the safety navigation. The objective of this paper is to research on the spectral domain GPS interference rejection algorithm using proposed K-median filtering threshold setting method. In the performance test, the proposed algorithm has a relatively higher ISR(interference to signal ratio) compared with the conventional temporal domain technique in case of time variant interference signals.

  • Most nations around the world have expressed significant concern in the climate change due to a rapid increase in green-house gases and thus reach an international agreement to control total amount of these gases for the mitigation of global warming. As the most important absorber of carbon dioxide, one of major green-house gases, forest resources should be more tightly managed with a means to measure their total amount, forest biomass, efficiently and accurately. Forest biomass has close relations with forest areas and tree height. Airborne LiDAR data helps extract biophysical properties on forest resources such as tree height more efficiently by providing detailed spatial information about the wide-range ground surface. Many researchers have thus developed various methods to estimate tree height using LiDAR data, which retain different performance and characteristics depending on forest environment and data characteristics. In this study, we attempted to investigate such various techniques to estimate tree height, elaborate their advantages and limitations, and suggest future research directions. We first examined the characteristics of LiDAR data applied to forest studies and then analyzed methods on filtering, a precedent procedure for tree height estimation. Regarding the methods for tree height estimation, we classified them into two categories: individual tree-based and regression-based method and described the representative methods under each category with a summary of their analysis results. Finally, we reviewed techniques regarding data fusion between LiDAR and other remote sensing data for future work.

  • Life Environment is rapidly changing and large scale disasters are increasing from the global warming. Although the disaster repair resources are deployed to the disaster fields, the prevention of the disasters is the most effective countermeasures. the disaster sign data is based on the rule of Heinrich. Automatic extraction of the disaster sign data from the web is the focused issues in this paper. We defined the automatic extraction processes and applied information, such as accident nouns, disaster filtering nouns, disaster sign nouns and rules. Using the processes, we implemented the disaster sign data management system. In the future, the applied information must be continuously updated, because the information is only the extracted and analytic result from the some disaster data.

ELIMINATION OF BIAS IN THE IIR LMS ALGORITHM (IIR LMS 알고리즘에서의 바이어스 제거)

  • The equation error formulation in the adaptive IIR filtering provides convergence to a global minimum regardless a local minimum with a large stability margin. However, the equation error formulation suffers from the bias in the coefficient estimates. In this paper, a new algorithm, which does not require a prespecification of the noise variance, is proposed for the equation error formulation. This algorithm is based on the equation error smoothing and provides an unbiased parameter estimate in the presence of white noise. Through simulations, it is demonstrated that the algorithm eliminates the bias in the parameter estimate while retaining good properties of the equation error formulation such as fast convergence speed and the large stability margin.

  • This paper proposes a quasi-optimal linear DOA (Direction-of-Arrival) estimator which is necessary for the development of a real-time robot auditory system tracking moving acoustic source. It is well known that the use of conventional nonlinear filtering schemes may result in the severe performance degradation of DOA estimation and not be preferable for real-time implementation. These are mainly due to the inherent nonlinearity of the acoustic signal model used for DOA estimation. This motivates us to consider a new uncertain linear acoustic signal model based on the linear prediction relation of a noisy sinusoid. Using the suggested measurement model, it is shown that the resultant DOA estimation problem is cast into the NCRKF (Non-Conservative Robust Kalman Filtering) problem [12]. NCRKF-based DOA estimator provides reliable DOA estimates of a fast moving acoustic source in spite of using the noise-corrupted measurement matrix in the filter recursion and, as well, it is suitable for real-time implementation because of its linear recursive filter structure. The computational efficiency and DOA estimation performance of the proposed method are evaluated through the computer simulations.

  • The shape and the distribution of material construction of the scatterer may be obtained from its scattered fields by the iterative inversion in the spectral domain. The illposedness, the resolution, and the uniqueness of the inversion are the key problems in the inversion and inter-related. The illposedness is shown to be caused by the evanescent modes which carries and amplifies exponentially the measurement errors in the back-propagation of the measured scattered fields. By filtering out all the evanescent modes in the cost functional defined as the squared difference between the measured and the calculated spatial spectrum of the scattered fields from the iteratively chosen medium parameters of the scatterer, one may regularize the illposedness of the inversion in the expense of the resolution. There exist many local minima of the cost functional for the inversion of the large and the high-contrast scatterer and the hybrid algorithm combining the genetic algorithm and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is shown to find efficiently its global minimum. The resolution of reconstruction obtained by keeping all the propating modes and filtering out the evanescent modes for the regularization becomes 0.5 wavelength. The super resolution may be obtained by keeping the evanescent modes when the measurement error and instance, respectively, are small and near.

Measuring COVID-19 Effects on World and National Stock Market Returns

  • Previous studies have found the significant adverse effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on stock returns and volatility. The effects varied with the confirmed cases and deaths. However, the extent of the effects have never been measured exactly. This study proposes a measurement model for the COVID-19 effects. In the proposed model, stock returns in the COVID-19 period are weighted averages of pre-COVID-19 normal returns and COVID-19-induced returns. The effects are measured by the contributing weights of the COVID-19-induced returns. Kalman filtering is used to estimate the model for the world and Chinese markets, in combination with 10 markets - five most affected countries (United States, India, Brazil, Russia, and France) and five best recovering countries (Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and South Korea). The sample returns are daily, obtained from the closing Morgan Stanley global investable market indexes. The full period is from September 24, 2018, to October 30, 2020, whereas the COVID-19 period is from November 18, 2019, to October 30, 2020. The contributing weights are significant and close to 100% for all markets. The COVID-19-induced returns replace the pre-COVID-19 normal returns; they are negatively auto-correlated and highly volatile. The COVID-19-induced returns are new normal returns in the COVID-19 period.

A Non-uniform Correction Algorithm Based on Scene Nonlinear Filtering Residual Estimation

  • Due to the technological limitations of infrared thermography, infrared focal plane array (IFPA) imaging exhibits stripe non-uniformity, which is typically fixed pattern noise that changes over time and temperature on top of existing non-uniformities. This paper proposes a stripe non-uniformity correction algorithm based on scene-adaptive nonlinear filtering. The algorithm first uses a nonlinear filter to remove single-column non-uniformities and calculates the actual residual with respect to the original image. Then, the current residual is obtained by using the predicted residual from the previous frame and the actual residual. Finally, we adaptively calculate the gain and bias coefficients according to global motion parameters to reduce artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm protects image edges to a certain extent, converges fast, has high quality, and effectively removes column stripes and non-uniform random noise compared to other adaptive correction algorithms.

  • Effective detection and correction of outliers of raw traffic data collected from the field is of keen interest because reliable traffic information is highly dependent on the quality of raw data. Global positioning system (GPS) based traffic surveillance systems are capable of producing individual vehicle speeds that are invaluable for various traffic management and information strategies. This study proposed a locally weighted regression (LWR) based filtering method for individual vehicle speed data. An important feature of this study was to propose a technique to generate synthetic outliers for more systematic evaluation of the proposed method. It was identified by performance evaluations that the proposed LWR-based method outperformed an exponential smoothing. The proposed method is expected to be effectively utilized for filtering out raw individual vehicle speed data.

Similarity Measure based on Utilization of Rating Distributions for Data Sparsity Problem in Collaborative Filtering

  • Memory-based collaborative filtering is one of the representative types of the recommender system, but it suffers from the inherent problem of data sparsity. Although many works have been devoted to solving this problem, there is still a request for more systematic approaches to the problem. This study exploits distribution of user ratings given to items for computing similarity. All user ratings are utilized in the proposed method, compared to previous ones which use ratings for only common items between users. Moreover, for similarity computation, it takes a global view of ratings for items by reflecting other users' ratings for that item. Performance is evaluated through experiments and compared to that of other relevant methods. The results reveal that the proposed demonstrates superior performance in prediction and rank accuracies. This improvement in prediction accuracy is as high as 2.6 times more than that achieved by the state-of-the-art method over the traditional similarity measures.
