  • The paper is oriented towards a reflection on the epistemological extension of world history. This discipline is currently opening up for new subjects and new foci of interest, with environmental history being one of them. The paper debates the interaction between the global and the local as one of the main issues of world history. It analyses the impacts of the interconnectivity of diverse regions as well as different geographical and cultural complexes, during the period between 1500 and 1800. Assuming that the sea in its economic, cultural and environmental dimensions contributed actively to world history, and is, in itself, a major factor of globalization, the paper intends to highlight interdependencies which fostered connections between the local and the global. It further submits to discussion which was the impact of an on-going globalization process, based on maritime dynamics, on the environment. Through an analysis centered on the impact of European overseas expansion, some environmental impacts will be analyzed. The paper aims at questioning environmental history as an emergent theme of world history, based on the historical experience of connecting worlds developed in the First Global Age (1500-1800).

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the control technology of global distortion in the deck of superstructures during manufacturing processes. The behavior of global distortion in the deck was evaluated by FEA and verified through comparing with the measured results by 3D measuring instrument. It was seen from the results that the principal factor inducing the global distortion is to be the bending moment associated with the longitudinal shrinkage force and transverse shrinkage caused by welding of stiffeners and flame heating to correct the excessive local out-of-plane distortion. Based on the results, the amount of reverse distortion in the thin deck plate was determined to control the global distortion in the deck plate. The proposed distortion control technology was verified by applying it to the actual structure.

  • Global land related datasets such as land use, land cover, vegetation cover percentage, forest cover percentage, are part of important global geospatial environmental datasets for global change studies. Since land cover varies place by place, continental production of dataset is a usual approach. Western academically developed countries have some projects to describe land cover related information in digital form using remote sensing technology in African, American continent and Oceania. In this paper, the author introduce his initiative to coordinate Asian scientists in order to develop land related dataset of Asia for our better understanding of the environment of Asia and for contribution to the development of global dataset. This paper explains activities by Land Cover Working Group (LCWG) of the Asian Association on Remote Sensing(AARS), Data and Information System(DIS) sub-committee of Japan national committee for the International Geosphere and Biosphere Program(IGBP), and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing(ISPRS) Working Group IV/6 on Global databases supporting environmental monitoring.

  • Global routing is to assign each net to routing regions to accomplish the required interconnections. The most popular algorithms for global routing inlcude maze routing algorithm, line-probe algorithm, shortest path based algorithm, and Steiner tree based algorithm. In this paper we propose weighted network heuristic(WNH) as a minimal Steiner tree search method in a routing graph and a genetic algorithm based on WNH for the global routing. We compare the genetic algorithm(GA) with simulated annealing(SA) by analyzing the results of each implementation.

  • Since the horizontal global radiation and cloud cover are a main factor for designing any solar energy system, it is necessary to evaluate its characteristics all over the country. The work presented here are the investigation of horizontal global radiation and cloud cover in Korea. The data utilized in the investigation consist of horizontal global radiation and cloud cover collected for 27 years(1982.12~2008.12) at measuring stations across the country. The analysis shows that the annual-average daily horizontal global radiation is $3.61kWh/m^2$ and the annual-average daily cloud cover is 5.1 in Korea. We also constructed the contour map of cloud cover in Korea by interpolating actually measured data across the country.

  • In recent days, it has been significantly suggested that the promotion of sustainable forest management will play an important role in ameliorating atmospheric carbon. In this respect, we intend to investigate the dynamic impact of the global timber market on carbon flux of forest through net carbon release into the atmosphere. For this purpose, we integrated the TSM 2000 with TCM to simulate the projection of net carbon release of the global timber market over 90 years, starting 1995. As a result, we identified that the global timber market increases the carbon dioxide concentration about l.9% over next 90 years; hence results in a positive effect on global warming. For sensitivity analysis, we performed these procedures under three different timber demand growth scenarios.

  • This paper presents a hierarchical framework for managing the sampling distribution of a particle filter (PF) that estimates the global positions of mobile robots in a large-scale area. The key concept is to gradually improve the accuracy of the global localization by fusing sensor information with different characteristics. The sensor observations are the received signal strength indications (RSSIs) of Wi-Fi devices as network facilities and the range of a laser scanner. First, the RSSI data used for determining certain global areas within which the robot is located are represented as RSSI bins. In addition, the results of the RSSI bins contain the uncertainty of localization, which is utilized for calculating the optimal sampling size of the PF to cover the regions of the RSSI bins. The range data are then used to estimate the precise position of the robot in the regions of the RSSI bins using the core process of the PF. The experimental results demonstrate superior performance compared with other approaches in terms of the success rate of the global localization and the amount of computation for managing the optimal sampling size.

  • This paper introduces a B-spline based branch & bound algorithm for global optimization. The branch & bound is a well-known algorithm paradigm for global optimization, of which key components are the subdivision scheme and the bound calculation scheme. For this, we consider the B-spline hypervolume to approximate an objective function defined in a design space. This model enables us to subdivide the design space, and to compute the upper & lower bound of each subspace where the bound calculation is based on the LHS sampling points. We also describe a search tree to represent the searching process for optimal solution, and explain iteration steps and some conditions necessary to carry out the algorithm. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is examined on some test problems which would cover most difficulties faced in global optimization area. It shows that the proposed algorithm is complete algorithm not using heuristics, provides an approximate global solution within prescribed tolerances, and has the good possibility for large scale NP-hard optimization.

  • This paper presents the analytical results of local - global interaction buckling of orthotropic I-shape compression members. Employing the equilibrium approach, the characteristic equation for local and global interaction buckling of I-shape compression member is derived. Using the derived equation, the buckling coefficients with respect to the ratio of length to width for the I-shape column are suggested as a graphical form. In addition, graphical forms of local, global and FEM results are presents, and they are compared with those in published document.
