  • This paper is focused on dynamic modeling and control system design as well as vision based collision avoidance for multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Multi-rotor UAVs are defined as rotary-winged UAVs with multiple rotors. These multi-rotor UAVs can be utilized in various military situations such as surveillance and reconnaissance. They can also be used for obtaining visual information from steep terrains or disaster sites. In this paper, a quad-rotor model is introduced as well as its control system, which is designed based on a proportional-integral-derivative controller and vision-based collision avoidance control system. Additionally, in order for a UAV to navigate safely in areas such as buildings and offices with a number of obstacles, there must be a collision avoidance algorithm installed in the UAV's hardware, which should include the detection of obstacles, avoidance maneuvering, etc. In this paper, the optical flow method, one of the vision-based collision avoidance techniques, is introduced, and multi-rotor UAV's collision avoidance simulations are described in various virtual environments in order to demonstrate its avoidance performance.

  • Impacts on the atmospheric circulation and ocean system over the Mediterranean during boreal summer are investigated using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) historical simulations (from 1911 to 2005). As the climate warms, global and remote effects lead to a strengthening in descending motion, an increase in sea surface temperature (SST) and surface dryness, but a decrease in marine primary production over the Western Mediterranean. The global effect is estimated from interannual variability over the global mean SST and the remote effect is driven by diabatic forcing generated from the South and East Asian summer monsoons. On the other hand, a local contribution leads to the strengthened descending motion and increased surface dryness over the Eastern Mediterranean, whereas the marine primary production over this region tends to increase due to possibly the urban wastewater and sewage. Our result suggests that particular attention needs to be paid to conserve the marine ecosystem over the Mediterranean.

  • Cross-border online shopping is an example of non-mobile transnational consumption behavior that has become more popular over the last decade due to the development of technology and transportation. Based on the Theory of Reasoned Action(TRA), this study proposed and tested the hypothesized model that would explain the relationships among consumption beliefs, attitudes toward cross-border online shopping, subjective norms, and purchase intention. Consumption beliefs were measured by global consumption orientation, consumer orientation, and global brand beliefs. In addition, subjective norms included two types: online and offline norms. Descriptive statistics and path analysis were employed for the analysis of the dataset of 174 participants. As a result, the hypothesized model was generally supported. Consistent with the hypothesis, global consumption orientation and global brand beliefs were positively related to positive attitudes toward cross-border online shopping but negatively associated with consumer ethnocentrism. Offline subjective norms positively predicted both the attitudes and purchase intention whereas online subjective norms only predicted purchase intention. The results reflected that TRA was applicable to the intention of cross-border online shopping in a current on-line shopping context. We also discussed the practical applications and limitations of the study.

  • An adaptive modeling and simulation technique is introduced for the effective and reliable fluid-structure interaction analysis using MSC/Dytran for large-scale complex pressurized liquid containment. The proposed method is composed of a series of the global rigid sloshing analysis and the locally detailed fluid-structure analysis. The critical time at which the system exhibits the severe liquid sloshing response is sought through the former analysis, while the fluid-structure interaction in the local region of interest at the critical time is analyzed by the latter analysis. Differing from the global coarse model, the local fine model considers not only the complex geometry and flexibility of structure but the effect of internal pressure. The locally detailed FSI problem is solved in terms of multi-material volume fractions and the flow and pressure fields obtained by the global analysis at the critical time are specified as the initial conditions. An in-house program for mapping the global analysis results onto the fine-scale local FSI model is developed. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified through an illustrative numerical experiment.

  • Since the solar radiation is the main input for sizing any solar system, it will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by solar system users as well as by research institutes. From the results, we can conclude that 1) The yearly averaged horizontal global insolation of Korea was turned out $3,042kcal/m^2.day$ in the periods of $1982\sim1999$. 2) Horizontal global insolation of spring and summer were 24 % and 21 %, higher than the yearly average value, respectively, and for fall and winter, their values were 12 % and 34 % lower than the yearly average value, respectively.

  • The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 at 16 different locations in Korea and for the more detailed analysis, images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth I s surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. From the results, the measured data has been collected at 16 different stations and estimated using satellite at 23 different stations over the South Korea from 1982 to 2000. The Result of analysis shows that the armual-average daily global radiation on the horizontal surface is $3.56kWh/m^2/day$ and Estimated solar radiation fluxes show reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -7.27 to +3.65% from the measured values.

  • Zabofloxacin is a novel broad spectrum fluoroquinolone with excellent anti-pneumococcal activity. We investigated the in vitro activity of zabofloxacin against clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria and the in vivo activity against systemic infection in mice. Zabofloxacin was very active against gram-positive bacteria except QRSA (Quinolone-resistant S. aureus) and VRE(Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci). Especially, zabofloxacin was extremely potent against clinical isolates of Streptococci. Zabofloxacin was as active as gemifloxacin against systemic infection in mice. In view of its improved antibacterial activities against gram-positive bacteria and good pharmacokinetic profiles in animals, the clinical usefulness of zabofloxacin should be established by further studies.

  • The growth in global energy demand and the increased recognition of the impacts of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel plants have aroused a renewed interest on nuclear energy. Many countries are looking afresh at building more nuclear power stations to deal with the twin problems of global warming and the need for more generating capacity. Many in the nuclear community are also anticipating a significant growth of new nuclear generation in the coming decades. If there is a nuclear renaissance, will the expansion of nuclear power be compatible with global non-proliferation and security? or will it add to the environmental burden from the large inventory of spent nuclear fuel already produced in existing nuclear power reactors? We learn from past peaceful nuclear activities that significant concerns associated with nuclear proliferation and spent-fuel management have resulted in a decrease in public acceptance for nuclear power in many countries. The terrorist attack in the United States (US) on September 11, 2001 also raised concern for security and worry that nuclear materials may fall into the wrong hands. As we increase the use of nuclear power, we must simultaneously reduce the proliferation, security and environmental risks in managing spent-fuel below where they are today.

  • While the existing research took approach method that uniformly divided the cultural difference between specific countries into individualism - collectivism in the dimension of comparative culture, this research defines the cultural sense of value of domestic university students and company employees in accordance with horizontalism-verticalism pattern within it to corroboratively define the diverse effects of advertisements of standardization and localization of global enterprises. Researching the difference of cultural sense of value owing to this generation of Korean university students and company employees, Korean university students showed prominent propensity of vertical-individualism value and company employees, propensity of horizontal-collectivism value. Researching comparatively the effect of advertisements for standardization and localization of global enterprises in connection with Korean university students and company employees, it turned out Korean university students prominently prefer localization advertisement in the TV advertisement of global enterprises and company employees, standardization advertisement. Especially, the difference between standardization advertisement and localization advertisement of university students and company employees was very remarkable in trademark attitude and advertisement information rather than advertisement attitude. With respect to model appearing in the advertisement, it turned out university students prefer localization advertisement where domestic models appear and company employees prefer standardization advertisement where foreign models appear.
